Chapter 18
Day lay on her back on the top of the bunk bed that she shared with another inmate named Alyssa. All the other inmates were out in the recreational center watching movies or playing cards for toilet paper. She loved when they were all gone because it gave her the chance to lie in silence.
Jail was no place for a woman like her, so she could only imagine what prison was going to be like. Her lawyer came to see her the day that she got brought in, and from what he told her things were not looking to be in her favor. He told her all of the evidence that they had against her and that there wasn’t even a point to going to trial. The fact that she was David Mason’s daughter would be enough for her to get a guilty verdict without even bringing the evidence into play. She knew that there were only two days left for the important meeting that David Jr. would have to go to, and she was sad that she wouldn’t be there by his side because it was the same day as her court hearing.
The one thing Day didn’t count on in jail was being tried by so many of the inmates. She was so used to the respect that she got when she was whipping through the streets that when she was hit by all of the hate it came as a surprise to her. Once it was known that David Mason’s daughter was in jail with them, a lot of them wanted to have a go at her. Whether it was because her father had somebody in their family killed, or because they had gotten caught up behind running for him, either way they wanted a piece of her. She hadn’t gotten into any fights yet because the guards had gotten specific instructions to not let anybody touch her until her court hearing on Saturday. It made her mad because it made her look weak to the other women, and they thought she was scared of them.
Little did she know a group of four women had gotten together and formulated a plan. What Day didn’t realize was, although she kept to herself most times, she kept to herself in the same spot every day at the same time. She was a sitting duck and they wanted to take her head off. They paid a couple of girls in cigarettes and toilet paper to start a fake fight with each other so the guards wouldn’t notice them all disappear back toward the cell block together. They crept up on Day’s cell as she lay on the bed, looking up at the ceiling.
Day heard their feet before she saw them and, instead of giving them the attention they wanted, she kept her eyes on the ceiling. “Welcome to my humble abode,” she said dryly. “How may I be of assistance to you?”
“You Davita Mason?” asked a tall, dark-skinned girl with braids that stopped at the nape of her neck.
“You wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.”
“Good! ’Cause I got a couple of bones to pick with you.” She was dead serious, and for that Day had to laugh. “Somethin’ funny?”
“Yeah,” Day said, finally looking at the four misfits in her cell. Two of them were tall and skinny while the other two were short and stocky. All were different shades of brown and they rocked braids in ponytails. She couldn’t guess their ages just by looking at their faces. It was true what they said. Jail aged you. “I don’t know any of y’all.”
“It don’t matter,” one of the short, stocky girls boomed, stepping forward and preparing to drag Day from her bed. “Because we know you. And we all knew your daddy. My baby daddy used to run for him when I was pregnant. When he got bumped up I took the wrap for him, but two days after they arrested me for what he did your daddy sent him on some bogus-ass run where he got killed. I had my baby in here and I can’t even get out for a year. The state got her now.”
“Sad story,” Day said, not feeling any emotion.
“I heard what happened to him.” The tall one spoke again and got close to the bed. “I heard whoever killed that nigga cut him up, shot him up, and even beat the shit out him with some brass knuckles. How does it feel to know that your daddy died so painfully?”
Day bit her lips together and sat up on her bed. They could say what they wanted to about her, but she wasn’t going to let them talk down her father.
“Come on,” the girl said, and then flashed a piece of metal in her hand. “Scary-ass bitch. The guards ain’t nowhere around now to stop us from fuckin’ you up. I’ma cut you for every hit my stepdaddy took from the drugs he bought from your daddy. Then I’ma stomp your head into the ground for every time he raped me when he was high.”
Day looked around and saw that all of the girls in her room had weapons, while she had nothing but her fists. She turned her nose up at all of them. “You bitches still be cutting people in jail?” Her voice was so icy and lacked any hint of fear. “If you know who my daddy is and if you know my mothafuckin’ name then you know how I get down.” She jumped down from the top bunk and walked up to the tall girl, who looked like she was hesitating to use her shank.
“Cut her, Diamond!”
“Yeah, slice that ho!”
“Bitch, I wish the fuck you would cut me.” Day tried to put as much power as she could in her voice when she got in her face. “It don’t matter if I’m in jail. I got pull on the streets no matter where I reside. I’ll get yo’ ass rung up by ya neck in your sleep. Keep fuckin’ with me.”
Day stared into Diamond’s eyes until she blinked. When she did, she lowered her weapon and took a step back. She had seen something in Day’s eyes that she had never seen in anybody’s and she knew she was probably speaking the truth. The last thing she wanted to do was wake up and see a hooded figure over her with a rope in their hand.
She shook her head at Day and stepped back. “Come on, y’all. Let’s go,” Diamond said and turned to leave the cell. “I ain’t fuckin’ with this crazy-ass bitch.”
It was clear that she was the ringleader and they did whatever she said, because they followed suit without another word.
“And tell all them other bitches that shit too. Princess Davita is in this mothafucka! Don’t try me!” she yelled after them before getting back on her bed and once again getting lost in her thoughts.

Indigo took the piece of paper from David Jr. and studied it. “This is some sick shit.” She shook her head, seeing that two of the Ds were crossed out. “Who would do this?”
David Jr. shrugged his shoulders. “According to Mac, my dad had too many enemies to keep track of. He’s installing new security equipment as we speak.”
The two of them sat cuddled up on the leather couches in Mac’s basement. David Jr. was beyond pissed off at the revelation that whoever was toying with them had gotten Day caught up with the feds. He knew that she would have preferred death over that any day.
“I don’t know why he won’t just show his face. Pussy-ass nigga.” David Jr. clenched his fist.
“Whoa, chill out, big man,” Indigo said. “He’s not here and you’re safe for now; that’s all that matters. When do you think you’ll be able to go home?”
“Shit, never,” David Jr. said. “I’m moving out that spot as soon as this meeting is over.”
“Right, I understand. You might turn on your shower and the whole place might go up into flames.” David Jr.’s body went rigid at her remark and it didn’t go unnoticed by her. “Oh, my. I’m sorry, David Jr. I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant, you never know if he’s been in your apartment. He’s playing a sick game.”
David Jr. relaxed his body. “Yeah, it is a sick game. I thought that these types of people just ran up in people’s houses and shot guns at people.”
“I guess the times are changing.”
“Whatever it is, I can’t wait until he comes at me,” David Jr. said seriously. “Because I’m going to be ready.”
“Are you now?”
“Hell, yeah,” David Jr. said. “I’m not going to be caught slipping. I’m the last Mason standing.”
“Mmm.” Indigo licked his lips, and slid from his lap to the floor. “You know what I want to see standing?”
He smiled down at her, watching her unzip his pants and remove his bulging member. He hadn’t had sex since the last time with her on the elevator, and that was the longest he’d ever gone without getting pussy.
“Hsssss,” he hissed when she put her perfectly glossed lips around the head. “That feels so good, baby.”
She bobbed her head up and down on him for about five minutes before she was ready to sit on it. She removed the leggings and thong that she was wearing and tossed them on the couch beside him. Climbing on top of his lap, she straddled his waist and lifted up his black Stussy shirt so her juices wouldn’t stain it.
“I’m falling for you, David Jr.,” she whispered and slid down on him slowly. “You make me feel so—mmmmm—good.”
He gripped her by her hips and pulled her forcefully down on him with each stroke. The way her face twisted whenever the tip of his dick tapped her love box was turning him on. He put his head in her neck and began to suck it as he pumped upward at her, matching her strokes.
“I think I’m falling for you too, Indigo,” he whispered in her ear; and he felt her pussy walls bite his shaft when she heard him.
“Say it again,” she moaned. “Tell me you love me, David Jr.”
“I love you, Indigo.” He wasn’t sure if he meant it, but it sounded like the right thing to say at that moment.
“I love you too, David Jr. Ohhhh fuck me! Fuck me harder!”
“Harder?” David Jr. asked and threw her on her back. He placed her legs behind his head and put his hands behind her knees to hold them in place. He gave her powerful, quick thrusts and watched her face the twist in pure bliss. “Like this?”
“Yes! David Jr., please make me cum. I want to cum so bad, daddy!”
He gave her what she wanted because soon after he felt a warm liquid squirting on his stomach. It was too much for him. He pulled out and released all over her shaved kitty. His body jerked at the intensity of his orgasm and he breathed heavily. Sweat had formed all around his forehead and he grinned.
“Thank you,” she whispered up at him. “That felt so good. I don’t think I can ever get enough of you.”
“You couldn’t stand me when you first met me,” he told her, releasing her legs.
“That was then. This is now,” she told him with sincerity in her voice. “I feel like all this shit, even though it’s crazy, has brought us closer together.”
“Me too,” David Jr. said and helped her sit up.
“Can I take a shower here?”
“Yeah, but do you have clothes?” David Jr. said and motioned to her panties and leggings on the couch. He had laid her on top of them while he was fucking her and they had just gotten all wet.
“Yes,” she told him and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “I have some in the trunk of my car. Give me some sweatpants or something to throw on when I get out of the shower, though.”
“A’ight. Let me show you to the bathroom.”

Mac walked into the visitation area of the correctional center where Davita was being held. He waited patiently at the table for them to bring her out to him. He had told David Jr. that he was out getting equipment to set up security cameras around the house, and that was half true. He didn’t tell him that he was going to the jailhouse, because he didn’t want him to see Davita like that. He had the house completely secure and had a body on almost every inch of his house while he was gone.
When they finally brought her through the doors he forced a smile on his face, although there was nothing happy about the greeting. She returned his pained smile and embraced him before taking a seat across from him. There were a few other inmates currently visiting with their families, and Day smiled when she saw the look in the eyes of an inmate holding her baby. The little boy couldn’t have been even one year old, and it saddened her to think about the pain the mother must have felt to not be able to see him grow on a day-to-day basis. She cleared her throat and turned her attention back to Mac.
“You done got yourself into some shit this time, girl,” Mac started, looking across the table and into her tired face. “What the fuck were you thinking?”
“About not getting caught up behind a snitch.” She thought about it and then laughed at the irony. “But now look at me. Caught up behind a snitch.”
“What you talking about, Davita?”
“Detective Avery told me that he got some anonymous tip,” Day said, shrugging her shoulders. “I almost didn’t believe him until they showed me the pictures of Antonio’s corpse.”
“I thought your father taught you to always burn the bones.”
“Well, I fucked up this time,” Day said, and looked down at the table before the tears could fall. She decided to change the subject. “How is my brother?”
“He’s coming into himself,” Mac responded. He was about to tell her about the letter that was left at his doorstep, but decided against it. It was obvious that she was already dealing with enough stress. And as sad as it was, at least with her in jail he knew she was out of harm’s way. “He is finally starting to accept who he is. Which will be good for the meeting on Saturday.”
“Why is this meeting so important, Mac?” Day asked. “And why didn’t Daddy pull me to go too?”
Mac sat up in his seat and leaned in closer so that he could lower his voice and she could still hear him. He rubbed his hands together before he spoke. “David Jr. is supposed to meet the connect in two days. After Saturday he will officially be the new king of St. Louis. King David was planning to retire, and he was going to pass the torch down to his son.”
“Why couldn’t he pass the torch to me?”
“Look at where you are now, Davita. You are a liability. Your head is too hot, and you have a hair-trigger temper. A kingpin never rules based off his emotions. His moves are duly calculated, and we both know that isn’t you. You are meant to be beside the king. His shooter. You are trained to go. But that is besides the whole point. The point is that King David was going to let David Jr. do whatever he wanted with the empire.”
“David Jr. would have wanted us to go legit.”
“Exactly.”
Davita got it suddenly. King David would never be able to go legit himself. He had built his whole life around the dirty money and the money laundering. He wouldn’t be able to just bow out, unless he passed down his crown.
