Blind Side Of Love (38 page)

I reached over to the table for the bag of fortune cookies. “Maybe one of these fortune cookies has the answer,” I teased.

“Oh yeah! Maybe!” She laughed. “Read it to me.” I cracked open the cookie and was silent for a moment. “Well, I’m waiting!”

“The person reading this fortune to you loves you very much.”

She giggled. “Really, silly, what does it say?”

“You really want to know?”

“Yes!”

I took a deep breath and prepared myself. “Will you marry me?”

The smile that was on her face instantly disappeared and I wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing. She gasped and covered her mouth with her hand as she sat there speechless.

“Umm…. Becca. Can you kind of tell me which way you’re leaning here?” Her smile returned, followed by tears.

She nodded. “Yes,” she whispered. I took her left hand in mine and slid the ring down her finger. It was a perfect fit, looking like it was made just for her. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pressed her forehead to mine. “I do believe that I am the happiest woman alive right this very second.”

I placed my lips on hers and her tongue found its way into my mouth. She pushed me down on the couch and her hands began to wander. “Hey Becca?” I whispered.

“Hmm?” she replied as she continued planting tiny kisses along my neck.

“You are making it very hard for me to follow my doctor’s orders right now.”

“I promise I’ll be very gentle.” She giggled.

“Feel free to break that promise,” I said, grabbing her face and meeting her lips once again.

Becca

Seven months later……

Mason and I married two months after our engagement in a small intimate ceremony at his parents’ house. It was truly the happiest day of my life. He was settling in nicely with his new job and I decided to take a leave of absence from mine once the baby was born. I was scared to death, every time I thought about taking care of a baby without my sight. We had hired Linda’s sister to help me out once the baby arrived. I hated feeling like I couldn’t care for my own baby. Every time I would begin to doubt myself, Mason would help me chase those feelings away. I had fully popped with only two weeks to go. I was actually glad that I couldn’t see what I looked like because I felt like I had a giant watermelon growing inside of me. We had found out at my three month ultrasound that my suspicions were correct; we were having a boy and we had decided on the perfect name for him – Drew.

Ashton was sentenced to twenty five years, which to me still wasn’t long enough. Krista tried to feign innocence in the whole matter, but once she saw that I wasn’t falling for it, she begged me to forgive her without any success. What she had done to Mason and I was unforgivable and I totally wiped my hands clean of her. I was putting the past behind me and now focusing on my new life with Mason and our baby.

Liz and Natalie had finally gotten married and Mason and I were having a great time at their wedding. I was just wrapping up my conversation with Liz’s sister when Mason came up behind me and wrapped his arm around me.

“Come outside with me,” he whispered. I excused myself and took his hand as he led me out the door.

“Is there a reason that you made me come outside on this chilly April night?” I asked.

“Yeah, there is.” I felt myself warming up a bit when he placed his suit jacket around my bare arms. “Becca Boudreaux, can I please have this dance with you?”

“Well, sure, but couldn’t we have done that inside where it’s a lot warmer?”

“You’re right; we could have, but inside doesn’t have the right kind of music.”

I creased my eyebrows in confusion until I heard the familiar tune of
Moonlight Serenade
. My heart was smiling along with my face as he pulled me close and we began to dance. I rested my head against his chest and closed my eyes, remembering that night on the beach from so long ago, never imagining the long journey that I would have to take to be back in his arms again in this way. My humongous belly was pressed up against him when I felt the familiar flutter of our baby, letting us know that he was there.

“Boy, I think he’s trying to tell us something.” Mason laughed.

“That is the best feeling in the world.”

“Just think, in two more weeks this guy is going to be coming out screaming.”

“Are you scared?” I asked.

“Hell, no. I want this more than anything in this world.”

“Mason, I called Dr. Jennson this afternoon. I want to have the surgery done after the baby is born.”

“Really?” I could hear the excitement in his voice as he pulled me closer and hugged me tightly.

I nodded. “If there’s a chance that I will be able to see my baby, then I’m going to take it.”

“And you will, Becca. I just have a feeling that you will.”

“Well, even if it doesn’t work, I know that I will still be seeing him with my heart. You will help me do that, right?”

“Of course I will.” I rested my head back on his chest, not wanting the music to end. “Hey Becca?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you see all the stars that are out tonight?”

I lifted my head toward the sky before turning my attention back to him, tracing the outline of his face. “I do and it’s beautiful.” I stood on my tiptoes and whispered in his ear, “And you know what?”

“What’s that?” he whispered back, grazing his lips against my earlobe.

“There’s going to be a full moon tonight, tomorrow….. and forever.”

I knew that no matter what the future held, I could deal with it. I was still seeing that beautiful star filled sky so clearly even without my sight. As long as I had Mason by my side, I wouldn’t be missing out on any of the beautiful moments in life. They would be forever captured in my heart.

Seven Months Later

I was completely out of it, not knowing where I was. The light was unbearable. I quickly shot up in bed. After seven years of darkness, I was finally seeing light. My eyes were slowly focusing in on shapes. The big square outline on the wall was a television. The smaller squares with pops of color were pictures. My heart was racing with excitement. "Becca, you're awake." I heard the familiar voice of Dr. Greenberg as the shadow of him moved closer. He sat down on my bed and shined a bright light in my eyes, causing me to close them. I opened them back up once he took the light away and a smile stretched across my face. "You have a moustache and wear glasses."

"Becca, you can see that?" I could hear the happiness in his voice. I nodded. "Do you have any idea how great this is? Most patients that have made a full recovery from this surgery haven’t been able to see any type of light until after the first few months once the optic nerve gets stronger and then they can start making out shapes.” I couldn't stop smiling. "I'm going to let your husband know you're awake and that he can come and see you. I won't share your good news. I'll leave that up to you."

"Thank you." I smiled and pulled my blanket over me. My
white blanket
. I could see colors; something that I would never take for granted again. My vision was nowhere near where it was before my accident, but it was a start.

"Becca." Mason's voice inched closer to me. He took a seat on my bed and I placed my hands on his cheeks as my eyes focused on that beautiful face that I had remembered from so long ago. He sat there quietly, almost as if he was afraid to know the results of the surgery.

“I always loved the way you looked in blue,” I said as my eyes drifted down to the pale blue shirt he was wearing.

“Becca! You can see that!” his voice cried out in sheer joy.

“Yeah, I can!” I nodded, trying my best to blink away the tears.

“Oh Baby! I knew it! I knew that it would work.” He kissed me on the head over and over again. “I’ve been dying to do something since the day I first walked into your office.”

“What’s that?”

He took my face in his hands. “Look at me, Becca.” The teardrops blurred my vision a little more as I stared into his eyes for the very first time in seven years, and they were more beautiful than I ever remembered.

"My handsome, handsome husband," I whispered.

“I love you so much, Becca.”

“I love you, too.”

He hugged me tightly and I melted in his arms. “Where are you going?” I asked when he stood up from my bed.

“I’ll be right back. I have a surprise for you.”

I was unable to wipe the smile from my face. I couldn’t wait to get home and
see
my baby for the first time. I closed my eyes and opened them quickly, making sure this wasn’t just a dream.

My eyes focused on Mason as he walked back in the room holding Drew. I was speechless. “Becca, this is Drew.” He placed him in my arms and my heart melted. Tears streamed down my face as I laid eyes on my beautiful little boy for the first time ever. I ran my hand through his baby fine hair that was almost as white as my blanket, focusing on his perfectly round face, his rosy cheeks, and his bright blue eyes. The same eyes that I always remembered staring back at me in the mirror for the first twenty one years of my life. "He’s so beautiful, Mason; just how I imagined him."

"Yeah, he is." The familiar butterflies that he had always brought to my stomach from so long ago were unleashed when I saw his face turn up into a huge smile.

“I thought he was with my mom and dad?”

“He was. I asked your parents to come here. I thought you would want to
see
him as soon as you woke up.”

"Thank you, Mason.” I choked back a sob. “I will remember this moment forever," I whispered.

"I want the painting," he said, kissing me on the forehead.

"Well, I don't know about that just yet."

"If it's in your heart, you can paint it."

“My heart is overflowing with it.” I smiled.

He moved in closer and pressed his lips against mine as he wiped the tears from my eyes.

I leaned my head on his shoulder and squeezed his hand tightly as I watched Drew finally give into his sleepiness and close his eyes. I rested my lips on his head, breathing in the familiar scent of his baby shampoo, and closed my eyes, wanting to seep every ounce of this moment into my heart forever. I was instantly bought back to that day on the beach and the blind man that I had made the drawing for:

If you ask me, everyone should be blind before they can see. People would view the world much differently.”

Truer words had never been spoken. My world was dark until Mason came back into it, allowing me to see once again, the same way he had allowed me to see before my accident and neither time with my eyes. Drew allowed me to see a life that I always dreamed of but was afraid of living. Mason allowed me to have that life through the visions in my mind, the feelings in my heart, and his love. I was fortunate enough to be blessed not once, but twice by the man sitting by my side and the beautiful baby sound asleep in my arms.

Mason and Drew—the two greatest loves of my life.
