Antique Mirror (4 page)

Tori turned around to find ripples rolling across the mirror, like waves on the ocean. Tori said a silent prayer of protection for her and Jonathan. The time had come to go.

Jonathan squared his shoulders and grabbed Tori’s hands. “Do you trust me, Tori?”

Time seemed to stand still before she finally answered, “I trust you, Jonathan.”

Jonathan quickly replied, “Then hold on tight.” Jonathan scooped Victoria up in his arms and stepped up on the stool by the fireplace and catapulted them through the mirror. They fell through to the other side. Jonathan quickly picked up a fire iron and smashed the mirror to smithereens before the witch could follow them.

Victoria ducked as fragments of the mirror sprayed across her bedroom. She reached down and picked up a jagged piece of glass and saw Jasmine pointing her finger at Tori. She dropped the piece on the floor and crushed it with the heel of her boot. “Jonathan, she’s still in the mirror.”

Jonathan didn’t pick up the glass. He said, “Do you have a broom?”

“Yes.” As Tori ran into her laundry room to get the broom, she heard the front door open. It was Max and Jett. Tori ran to Max. “Quick, Max, put Jett in the den and shut the door. The witch tried to follow us through the mirror, but Jonathan smashed it. There’s glass everywhere, and I don’t want Jett to get hurt. The witch is still in there, in the shards of glass.” Tori pointed to her bedroom.

Max quickly took Jett into the den and shut the door. Then he followed Tori into her bedroom. Max was carrying a huge leather bound book and ran to the table beside the chaise and flipped it open. “A friend let me borrow this book. It is full of curses. I found this today. There are several curses in here regarding mirrors. But this one is eerily close to what you’ve been living in, Jonathan.”

Jonathan picked up the book of curses and stifled a groan. With a frown, he tossed a glance at Max and then turned to Victoria. Jonathan said, “This is the curse Jasmine used on Mae and me.”

Tori anxiously said, “Does it say anything about broken mirrors? That evil witch is still in there. She may know how to escape.”

Jonathan said, “I’ll start a fire, and you sweep up the pieces. We’ll throw the shards in the flames and then maybe the fire will burn her alive.”

Tori began to sweep up the broken pieces as Jonathan started a fire and Max continued to read the book of curses. They looked at each other wide-eyed with alarm when Jasmine began to chant loudly from the broken pieces:

“Broken mirrors never clearer, cursed mirror bring me nearer, hear me now and make them quiver. Mirror, Mirror, hear my cry, die fools die
,
for I’m your killer.”

Tori threw her broom down and screamed with fear. She yelled at Jasmine, “Stop! Stop!” and covered her ears.

Max picked up the broom and scooped up the pieces into the dustpan and yelled at Jasmine, “Shut up, Witch!”

Jonathan had the fire blazing until the room was so hot they were all sweating. He glanced over his shoulder and shouted at Max, “Hurry, throw the pieces in the fire now!”

As the shards of glass hit the flames, sparks flew out into Tori’s bedroom. Tori and Max stomped out the embers with their boots. Suddenly, a shrill cry ripped through the room, and they all watched as the glass melted and simply vanished away.

Max rubbed his head. Out of breath, he said, “Tori, do you have any whiskey?”

Tori ran out into her kitchen and opened the liquor cabinet. She grabbed a bottle of Gentlemen Jack and placed it on the tray from the kitchen counter and grabbed three shot glasses. Tori was visibly shaken when she returned to her bedroom and placed the tray on the table beside the chaise, nearly dropping it all on the floor before Max came to her aid. She poured them each a shot and drained hers quickly. Pale and still frightened, she said, “Is she gone? Is Jasmine dead?”

Jonathan walked over and picked up his shot and drank it. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and then said, “I think so. What time is it?”

Max reached into his pocket and pulled out his iPhone. “It’s 11:55, almost midnight and All Saints Day.” Max grabbed his whiskey shot and drank it and then poured another. “Holy shit. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would have never believed what happened here.”

Jonathan pulled Tori against him and slipped his arm around her waist, and she leaned against his shoulder. Jonathan looked down at her and said, “Are you okay, Tori?”

Tori gave him a weak smile and said, “I am now. Is Jasmine dead, Jonathan?” Tori looked back at the fire. Her blood still thundered through her veins, and she recalled Michael Myers and shivered at the thought that Jasmine could still be out there.

Jonathan leaned down and kissed her, and then caressed the side of her face with his hand. “Yes, Jasmine is dead.”

Max poured them all another round and then raised his glass. “Ding, freaking dong! The wicked witch is dead.”
