In the same group on the northwest corner of 24th and Guadalupe were an engaged couple named Abdul Khashab and Janet Paulos. Abdul, a twenty-five-year-old graduate student in chemistry and a native of Iraq, and his fiancée Janet Paulos, a native of Garland, Texas, were to be married very shortly. He was on a scholarship from his government; she was a twenty-one-year-old senior majoring in English. As Whitman directed his fire on the helpless group, a round blasted through Janet's chest, fracturing four of her ribs; she fell to the sidewalk. Before Abdul could bend over to help, he was shot in the right elbow and hip. Their wedding would be delayed, but not for long. When they married on 27 August 1966, Abdul's arm was still in a sling.

Houston McCoy arrived at the University Police Station to volunteer to go to the Tower. At the station UT Security Sergeant A. Y. Barr had assembled a group of men for the job: from APD, McCoy, Harold Moe, Phillip Conner, Milton Shoquist, and George Shepard; from the university, William Wilcox and Frank Holden. Their path to the Tower traveled over open ground, through tunnels, in elevators, and through stairways. Houston McCoy had already been on an odyssey. He kept asking for a plan, but there was no plan. He had had enough of watching people die. Adrenalin complimented a resolve to get the sniperhe wanted the killing to stop.
