Waking up the Lung's Spirit

The spirit of the lungs reflects the mortal soul. Unlike the immortal soul, this representation of soul and spirit is believed to be given to us anew with each incarnation. This spirit defines our courage to accomplish what we came to do in this lifetime. The lung's spirit can become imbalanced when blocked by grief.

SHEN: THE HEART'S SUPREME SPIRIT

Energy is everywhere, and it is always generating waves that influence every action and every reaction. In the world of energy, everything moves from the subtle internal to the denser external. This is how all things originate—even the emotions that affect our spirits.

According to the ancient Chinese, the energy of dis-ease begins in the spirit of the heart-mind. As the primary residence of the spirit (Shen), they believed that the heart's mind interacts with the soul. These internal references where only the deepest human thoughts and emotions reside represent the innermost rooting place of all disease. Though dis-ease moves its way ever outward from spirit—from heart-mind to physical form—its ripple effect can always be traced from the deepest internal source of our being. They understood well how dis-ease moved from the heart-mind and emotion to the body.

We might think of the internal starting place for dis-ease as the cardiac intrinsic ganglia (heart-mind). Dis-ease first moves from the cardiac intrinsic ganglia to the big brain and body. Negative emotional experiences are first registered in the heart's little brain. They are then simultaneously recorded in the amygdala, hippocampus, central nervous system, and unconscious mind, where they initiate the body's dis-ease process. Once the pattern is established it is then neurologically wired for long-term memory between the
amygdala, the hippocampus, and the right prefrontal cortex. The right prefrontal cortex remembers and anticipates. The right brain's remembering can result in depression, and its anticipation can result in anxiety. This was designed by nature to keep us from burning our finger on the stove a second time, but the potential effects of an overzealous right-brain protection system can be devastating to our life-force energy. Whereas the right prefrontal cortex remembers and anticipates, the left prefrontal cortex constructs. Not only is there a positive and negative differential between these two brain hemispheres, the right is more susceptible to being controlled by outside forces, while the left is more inclined to self-empowerment.

The little brain within the heart is where we determine the “good” and the “bad” perceptions of life, as well as the “powerful” and the “powerless” self. Once the message is simultaneously coded into our unconscious mind and body via our nervous system, the message is then wired as a powerful signal that becomes energetically imprinted into our mind/body, affecting our mental and emotional health and immunity. It's in this way that we either become programmed for sympathetic (stress) or parasympathetic (relaxation response) dominance. This is where we either develop a spirit of calm (ease), or a spirit of fear (dis-ease).

SHEN (DIAGNOSTIC)

The first part of this exercise is diagnostic, where practitioner and subject assess in detail all the subject's deep spirit energy blockages. The second part of the exercise is about balancing and healing. In order to clear the Shen, the practitioner must first obtain a Illustrated Shen Clearing Chart (Appendix E). Practitioner and subject must then assume EMT pass/fail position. The practitioner calls out the five negative organ emotions one at a time: anger, hatred, anxiety, grief, and fear. As the practitioner calls out an emotion, they must first record a pass/fail muscle test response. If the
subject's arm drops, this suggests that there is an energy disturbance that corresponds with that emotion. If the arm remains strong, it indicates that there is no imbalance with that particular emotion. Next, it is important to pulse test the disturbed emotion so as to diagnose the degree of imbalance. Pulse test from
negative
1 to 10. The highest negative numbers represent the greatest disturbances. For example, if anger produces a failed pulse test response at a range of negative 1 to 3, it is only minor. If it fails at a negative 4 to 6 pulse, it is moderate. A negative 7 to 10 pulse test response, however, should be considered severe.

Next, the Internal Root reference should be tested. This reveals the source or sources of the subject's negative emotional energy blockages. There are six potential sources in all, which are: mother, father, natal family, married family, culture, and world. When our unconscious mind stores negative emotional life experiences, it catalogs them in neurological compartments in the brain. Each stored negative energy is directly associated with one of these five Internal Root References. Before testing for the Internal Root References, practitioners must make sure to explain to all subjects exactly what they are about to do. Painful emotions may surface during this juncture of the exercise. These emotions may represent a potential healing crisis that some may not be ready to contend with.

Once the practitioner feels ready to proceed, they should note the present age of the subject by drawing a line just beneath the corresponding number on the Ages of Shen Blockages section of their Shen Clearing Chart. Then, they should once again prepare to assume proper EMT pass/fail posture with their subject. First, the practitioner should call out “Prebirth.” This will reveal any Shen blockages that might have occurred while in the womb. Now, the practitioner will call out the remaining ages, one at a time, beginning with “One,” and so on. If, when audibly calling out any age, the subject's arm falls, the practitioner should circle it on the chart. At each age, the practitioner must call out the negative emotion that
failed above when tested. Finally the subject's emotional blockages that correspond with the age that has failed must be pulse tested from a negative 1 to 10. So, if the subject's arm dropped at age of three, and their earlier test failed with grief, then it is important to pulse test the degree of grief that the subject is holding on to.

CLEARING THE SHEN (SPIRIT BALANCING)

The balancing healing part of the Shen Clearing protocol is very simple. The practitioner and subject interface in the standing pass/fail position. The practitioner must ask the subject to close their eyes. The practitioner must then recite the following speech, or a similar monologue, to the subject:

“Now I will ask you to exhale, releasing a cleansing breath from exactly where your breath is, followed by a deep inhale breath. Hold the breath in for a count of three . . . one, two, and three . . . then release the breath fully, holding it out for a count of three . . . one, two, and three. Once again, take another deep breath, filling your lungs to full capacity. Now, again, hold the breath in for a full count of three . . . one, two, and three. Again, fully release the breath and hold the breath out for a count of three . . . one, two, and three. Finally, take your third and final deep inhale. Hold the breath in for a count of three . . . one, two, and three. Now, while still holding the breath in, I will ask you to open your mouth and pause for a slow count of three . . . one, two and three. Now fully release the breath.

“Keeping your eyes closed, I will now ask you to draw upon your highest, deepest intentions to profoundly heal your life. You have carried deep destabilizing energies within your heart-mind and spirit for far too long. You will now draw up from within you the highest power of love and innermost determination to release and let go of all the imbalanced energies that have, up until now, attached to your spirit. This is your touchstone moment. You are
about to transform and heal your entire being. I will ask you to simply release all the energy blockages that we've just discovered together. Regardless of the what, where, why, when, and how, these blockages are merely energies that you have the complete power to release, and you will.” (Practitioners should now briefly and swiftly summarize the subject's specific blockages about to be released, instructing the subject to release each one.)
