When the Power Is Gone: A Powerless World - Book 1 (20 page)

“That settles it. We start security watches tonight. Also, keep lanterns and candle flames low, and no more daytime fires. Everybody who is not on watch tonight, get a good night’s sleep, because first thing in the morning, we unpack everything we brought, get settled, and get busy. We need to work on shelter for the new folks and figure out how to get Sean and Kate to their friends’ house, if they still want to go.”

Sean looked at Kate, then at Russ. “I think we should stay here for now, if that’s okay. I don’t want to take my family right back out on the road. They need some rest and a safe place to sleep, at least for a few days. If that’s okay with everyone.”

Russ nodded. “More than okay. I’m glad you decided to stay, at least for a while. Let’s get inside, gang. We need to get ready for the tomorrows that are coming, and the bad people that are bringing them.”

Acknowledgments

Thank you to all of you who have purchased my first novel. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you will want to read the rest of their story.

I never thought about writing a novel. Well, okay, I thought about it, but I didn’t know what I would write about. What did I have to offer the world that people would want to read? When I got the idea for When the Power is Gone, it was like someone had flipped a switch in me. I started writing and after about six chapters I had my husband take a look. His excitement at wanting to know the rest of the story spurred me on. The finished product is something I’m proud of.

So, I’ll start off by thanking my husband, Jim, for his unwavering support of me in this endeavor. He built my website, and keeps it updated with new reviews and content. He was my first proofreader. He pushed me to stay with it, and finish it. He gave me the time I needed to work on it, even if it changed plans we had made for something else. He has shared every joy with me as we have watched the ratings rise on the initial version. He is my best friend and the inspiration behind this book. Thank you, Baby.

I would also like to thank my aunt, Carol. Her help with proofreading and information on writing methods made me totally revamp the first version and republish it in a more traditional layout. I like it much better and will continue to use it in subsequent novels. Thank you, sweet aunt.

Thank you to all of my friends who were some of the first to read it (and they paid for it, I did not give it to them for free), who sent me messages about how much they loved the book and couldn’t wait for the next installment. Kim, Jeana, Christy – thank you for the encouragement.

I want to thank all the other authors in this genre. This is a field that is pretty much male dominated, as far as the writers go. I’ve read dozens of books they’ve written and they go into great detail about weapons, logistics, and machismo. I got the idea to write this book because of that. I wanted to try to write one from a woman’s perspective; one more like myself, who found her world completely changed in a matter of seconds, and how she could and would adapt to it. I think I accomplished that.

Lastly, I want to thank the Lord for the gift he gave me of wit, words, and a desire to do something I’d never done before. I placed my life in His hands and all I have is because of Him. Thank you, Lord, for the many blessings you bestow upon me every day.

Keep an eye out for the next installment in the
A Powerless World
series, later this year!
