When Chemistry Wins (The Dark Horse Trilogy Book 1) (9 page)

She didn’t wait for her mother’s reply, but she did nod her head politely to the other people at the table before stealing away toward the restroom. A few people glimpsed in her direction as she walked by, but within a few seconds Kerri was alone in a back hallway.

Signs pointed the way to the women’s restroom. However, Kerri did not go directly there. Instead she sent Hunter a text message.
“Which closet?

She saw a door slightly open in a far, private corner.

No way was he serious. Did he really want to rendezvous with his girlfriend in a
closet?
Kerri scoffed, but did not text to tell him to forget about it. Instead she took some trepid steps toward that corner, her heart racing with the thrill of being caught.

For if they were caught, Kerri was looking at an explanation she could never come up with.
I hope this guy’s a smooth talker.

Sure enough, she found Hunter in the closet. He poked his head out the door after Kerri came in before closing it and propping a mop beneath the handle.

“All right, here I am.” Kerri kept her voice low as she leaned against a wall. A single light was on above them, but it wasn’t enough to cast away the shadows looming across stocked shelves and on the grungy ground. Nor was it enough to shield Hunter’s face from the darkness creeping upon his skin. “What is it that you want?”

Hunter looped his arm around her, his hand resting on her rear. “You, of course.” He kissed her, tenderly, and in an instant Kerri was seduced into his strong embrace.
Oh, yes.
The very thing she had become addicted to since their first night together. Kerri pulled her lips away from his the moment their breaths became a bit too heavy.

“Come on,” she said. “We can’t do it here. I need to get back before they get suspicious.”

Reluctantly Hunter released her, but not without another kiss to her lips. “This is driving me nuts,” he mumbled. “What good is a relationship if we can’t see each other more often?”

“We knew this would be an issue.” Kerri almost rolled her eyes. As flattered as she was that her boyfriend wanted to spend more time with her, she would not pretend that she was a total puppy for him. “Which is why it would’ve been a good thing to take things more slowly.”

His arm was back around her, pulling her into a tighter hold than before. “Slowly? Pull my fingernails out one at a time, why don’t you?” Hunter kissed her throat, both hands on her arms as they restrained themselves from lowering her dress’s zipper. “Slowly! It already feels like we’re crawling at an agonizing pace. I feel like I barely know you as it is.”

“And yet here we are, in a closet.”

“I’m not so snobby that I think myself above a closet tryst.” Hunter kissed her yet again to reiterate his point.
I’m not stupid.
Kerri knew what he wanted.
I happen to want the same thing as well.
Difference was that Kerri was a bit snobby when it came down to it. For one, a closet was hardly comfortable for making love in. Kerri liked the finer things – like a bed. Then again, she mused, it had been a long time since she last had sex outside of a bedroom. There was also the chance of them being caught buzzing in her chest.

When Hunter kissed her throat again, Kerri diverted his mouth to hers.

Things fell off the shelves and a broom tumbled past Kerri’s ass as the two of them bumped up against one wall and then another.
I want to rip these clothes off.
Hunter was dressed in his best again, like he had been that night at the fundraiser. Kerri pawed at his smart jacket and shirt beneath as if she didn’t know how to unbutton the front. But in the haze of lovemaking, she couldn’t accomplish much more beyond finding the zipper to his trousers.

Just as Hunter discovered the front of his girlfriend’s dress could be persuaded to lower, Kerri dropped to her knees, each one bumping onto the floor of the closet.
I’ll make sure we’re both ready to go.
At least Hunter was half ready by the time Kerri lured him out of his pants.

His groan as she took him into her mouth was almost loud enough to penetrate the closet door. Kerri took satisfaction from the sound but worried that someone may have heard – but then Hunter stroked the back of her head, and she faltered, amazed that something like this could feel so tender.

I’ll give him something to groan about.
Kerri wrapped her hand around the base of his shaft and wrapped her lips around the tip. This time it was a guttural groan coming from Hunter’s throat as Kerri treated him to the naughty fun of his life.

She would not let him climax, however. Especially not in her mouth, and
not
in a closet!
Even like this, I have some standards.
The media would be so proud.

“You tease,” Hunter said in the husky voice he saved for the bedroom. Kerri stood up again and found herself back in his arms, this time with his full erection pressing against her hip. “You beautiful tease.” His famished lips mauled her throat as he pushed her against the wall and lifted her rear onto a shelf. The contents had long spilled to the floor; Kerri’s dress had long ridden up her thighs. Her legs spread around her boyfriend’s waist, his erection pushing toward her center.

“Wait a second, stud.” Kerri reached into his back pocket and fondled his wallet. “Don’t get too carried away.” While Hunter took care of business, Kerri made sure she was aroused enough for something as brazen as this. The downside to a quickie in a closet was a lack of a certain something.

But she was ready. This became even more apparent when he rubbed against her again, his hot, pounding breath searing into her ear as she melted in his embrace.

This time she was the one responsible for the loud cry as he entered her, everything in that closet disappearing once their union was made official. Kerri crushed her own voice and instead funneled her energy into digging her fingers into Hunter’s shoulders. He thrust into her, once, twice, one last time until they found the perfect angle to make love that way.

Of course, “perfect” was a work in progress when it came to a cluttered closet.

Things that remained on the shelves shook again; the light came in and out of focus the longer Kerri stared at it through glazed eyes; her ass became numb on her mantle, but it only added to her pleasure. Hunter was relentless as he rocked into her, sometimes deep and sometimes shallow. Kerri loved both kinds of movements, and each thrust brought her closer to her climax – especially when Hunter reached down her dress and found one of her nipples.

He told her it was coming. Kerri knew what “it” was, so she thrust against him in an attempt to meet his rhythm. The tiny closet became more claustrophobic as Hunter’s thrusts steadied, his voice reaching a low growl as he bit her shoulder to muffle the rolling sounds of pleasure coming out of his mouth.

There it is…
Kerri tilted her head back, closed her eyes, and succumbed to the feeling of her lover expending himself inside of her.
I did that. This man is mine.
She whimpered in triumph as her toes finally began to shake in her heels, and her body gave in to the temptations flanking it. Her orgasm was quick, but it shot straight to her head, her groin, and her throat as she sang in relief.

Hunter was slow to dislodge himself from her, but she was grateful when he did, for she could finally ease her legs and slide off the shelf. Kerri landed right in his arms, where he gently kissed her cheek as if they were basking in bed.

“That was fun,” he muttered into her ear. “We should do it again sometime.”

Kerri chastised him for his perversions. “That
was
fun. But you know what would be even more fun?”

Hunter pushed her wavy hair behind her ear. “What’s that, my darling?”

“Having some real alone time together.” The silence that ensued was almost daunting. “I want to go somewhere with you. Take a trip. Spend a weekend in some rural cabin where nobody knows us and we can do whatever the hell we want.” She surprised herself with this admission. In truth, she thought of it often.
Him and me in a remote cottage.
What better way to get to know each other given their circumstances?

After some readjustment, Kerri stood next to Hunter with his arm around her shoulders. He had zipped himself up again, but not without a mighty sigh that said nothing about what he was thinking of. “That does sound nice. Lord knows I want to spoil my girlfriend silly somewhere. Maybe it can be done.”

Just as Kerri pulled him toward her with a smile on her lips, the closet door opened.

Hunter did not immediately recognize the poised and coiffed woman gaping at them with wide eyes. He was too shocked by her sudden presence, the bright light streaming through the doorway, to properly know who interrupted his otherwise perfect tryst.

Kerri, however, knew her immediately. “Mother!”
Oh, shit.

The lovebirds pushed away from each other, but the damage was already done. What else could they mean besides being locked up in a closet together and embracing like lovers?

“Mother,” Kerri continued, stepping out of the closet with her tangled hair and mussed dress. When Brenda saw these things she gasped in horror, her face of anguish looking straight at Hunter.
Does she know who I am yet?
Maybe he could sneak away and be “some boy” Kerri got tangled up with. “I can explain.”

No, she knew him. That twisting visage on Brenda’s otherwise immaculate form was not just for her daughter’s sordid affairs in public.
It’s for me as well.
Hunter was quite grateful that he had already put himself away in his pants.

“Explain?” Brenda snatched her daughter’s wrist. “There is nothing to explain.”

“Mother!”

“We will discuss this
later!

Hunter stepped into the doorway, his eyes adjusting to the light once more.

A gasp from the other end of the hallway grabbed everyone’s attention.

The impasse creating a rift in the back of the restaurant was almost strong enough to knock the universe off balance. What a group this was. Hunter and his sweet lover Kerri, joined by affection, desire, and a wish to be together in peace; Brenda Mitchell acting as if she saw no birds or bees erupting from that closet, her daughter the fair and delicate bird while Hunter was the terrible bee with his stinger erect and poised for attack.

And Ronnie Hall, hanging outside the women’s restroom and looking like she just saw Elvis bending Marilyn Monroe over the janitor’s mop bucket.

Two mothers; two lovers. Kerri crumpled beneath her mother’s hold, a striking look of disbelief clouding her equally striking face. Hunter went to her side and yanked her from Brenda, who smacked him with the feistiest hand a mother could manage.

“Don’t you hurt him!” Ronnie entered the fray, her lanky arms shoving Brenda’s stouter ones away. “Don’t you touch my son!”

Slap.

Slap.

Never before had two otherwise composed women fallen into a playground catfight. One the governor’s wife – the other the wife of his biggest opposition. Not two feet away, Kerri burrowed herself into Hunter’s arms and wished for him to take her away. Hunter could only shield her from the embarrassment exploding before them.

“We will win,” he whispered into her ear. While Kerri did not cry, she trembled in his embrace. “We can be with whomever we want.”

The looks both of their mothers gave them soon after did not inspire such confidence.
