Like I might actually learn to belong here, with these people.

Kade stepped up beside me and took my hand in his. “You okay?” he asked.

His spicy scent, warm and safe and exciting, all at once, enveloped me, and I leaned into him, not caring who saw us kiss.

“Yes,” I said, a long time later as I finally pulled my mouth from his. “I think I’m going to be just fine.”

Readers familiar with North Central Texas will notice that I’ve taken some liberties with the geography of the area, setting part of the story in caverns not far from Dinosaur Valley in Glen Rose, Texas. No such deep caves exist, though there are shallow caves that show evidence of Native American habitation overlooking the Brazos and Paluxy Rivers. Similarly, descriptions of the Paluxy River vary in some detail from the actual river’s course.

There are always people to thank for helping with the technical aspects of a book—and I am certainly thankful to all of them (I hope I remembered everyone in the list below!)—but for this book, in particular, it has been the love and kindness and generosity of the people in my world who have made it possible. Perhaps more than any other I’ve written, this book is a work of my heart. I wrote it at a time when my world was changing faster than I could keep up, and often in unpredictable and frightening ways. My family, my friends, and writing were often all that kept me steady. In no particular order, I would like to thank my parents, Isabel, Don and Debbie, Daniel and Allison, Lateia, Erin, Eli, Amber, Bokerah, Melanie, Emily, Kimberly, Clint, Jim, Pamela and Michael, Deborah, Gary and Lisa, Allessandria, Shelley, Robin, and Jennifer.
