The Real Rebecca (23 page)

‘Rebecca!’ said my mother. ‘I’m parking illegally here!’ I could see Cass and Alice in the back seat tapping her on the shoulder and whispering urgently in her ear.

‘I’m coming!’ I said. ‘So … will I see you on Friday?’

‘Definitely,’ said Paperboy. ‘And maybe we can arrange to meet somewhere less, um, full of your angry relatives.’

‘Okay,’ I said. He grinned at me and kissed me on the cheek.

‘See you then,’ he said, and headed back into the venue. He had just reached the door when I remembered something.

‘Hey!’ I called out. ‘I know this is ridiculous but … what’s your name?’

He laughed and turned back for a second.

‘It’s …’ And just as he spoke my horrible, awful
embarrassing mother blasted the car horn. By the time she’d stopped blasting he was inside the building and I had to get in the car, where Cass and Alice shrieked so loudly my mother threatened to kick us all out. Which is just like her. I can’t believe she’s done it again! Just when I thought she had stopped disgracing me in public.

I also can’t believe I have been kissed by Paperboy and I still don’t know what his name is.

Oh well.

I’ll find out on Friday.
