The Forbidden: A Huntress Novel (The Huntress Series Book 1) (31 page)

“Have you eaten, Adam?” I asked.

I grabbed my toothbrush and cleaned the vomit from my teeth.

He scoffed. “I see you have.”

“Adam, not now,” Eli chastised.

“Fine,” He snapped as he shook his head and stormed off.

Lucas handed me a towel and I wiped my mouth and exhaled. The tension between Adam and I was bothersome. We used to be so close and now we can’t even be in the same room.

Lucas cupped my chin and smiled. “Don’t worry about it. Give him time to adjust, he’ll come around.”

“He hates me.”

“It won’t last forever trust me. I hated you at one point, and now I am thankful that you saved me.” Eli said.

“We’ll see.” I said.

“So, your bodies can handle human food, but it doesn’t fill you up or even help with giving you stamina for too long. You can’t drink human blood because your reaper obviously despises it. So what is there? There has to be something that your body will crave, something that will satisfy both the reaper and vampire’s hunger.” Lucas said.

“Our bodies seem to be one big mystery.” I said.

Lucas scowled. “I don’t like that at all.”

“We’re going to die, aren’t we?” Eli said.

I looked down twisting my fingers together. My stomach turned in knots as he said my unspoken thoughts.

“It’s a possibility,” Lucas mumbled.

I didn’t want to believe that Eli and I could possibly die from starvation a week or two from now. I wasn’t ready to leave this earth and the thought of leaving Lucas and Adam behind absolutely broke my heart. I have so much unfinished business here. Eliana is on my hit list, I won’t allow her to get away with sticking her nose where it didn’t belong. Most importantly, I had to find my mom. I had so many questions for her, questions that are beginning to eat me up inside because I have no answers. There is no peace with my mom and I, and I didn’t want to die without getting the answers I deserved to have. No, I can’t die. I have to try my hardest to fight against death.
