‘You put it admirably.'

She was still thinking about what he'd said as they went outside into the darkening afternoon. The sun was going down over the hill, beyond which lay Flowerdew, far to the left. ‘Was Irena Bron Kitty's daughter?' she asked.

‘Who knows now, except Kitty herself?'

It didn't matter. There were always unresolved questions, doubts and dissatisfactions. No case was ever as complete as he would like. They still had another two miles to walk to get back to where they'd left the car. There was no hurry but now that the sun had gone down the wind was cold. He reached out for her hand and they set off briskly down the village street.
