Sorcerer Rising (A Virgil McDane Novel) (52 page)

I wal
ked into my uncle’s office and took out the second half of my staff, all that remained of the office I had once held. The very same staff that he had broken over his knee, the one that had been locked in my mind when they branded me.

I walked into his office and
quietly placed it on his desk.

“I won’t be needing this anymore,” I said.

I ignored the utter lack of surprise on his face. I didn’t turn back as he called my name. I walked out.

Lastly, I blew the doors off Rasputin Teplov’s mansion. I put a d
ozen of his men in the hospital and walked into his dining room as he was eating with his lieutenants. I stared down the Tin Man’s steely gaze, the man who ran Mare City’s underworld, a Knight of the Order of the Ring. A man so cold that he was named for not having a heart.

I pointed my wand at him and said, “You said to come back when I could do something about it.”
