Outbreak The Living (The Outbreak Series) (19 page)

“You’re a good boy.” I pat him on his neck. “This is your new home, what do you think?” I know he can’t answer me, but it has to be better than what he has had.  Coming up in front of the guys I stop. Smiling, I look over at Sal.

“Thank you, Sal, this means a lot to me.”  Rubbing his neck, he throws his head up and down.

“You’re welcome, Egypt,” he says quietly. He walks into the house and out of sight. Mack walks over and grabs my foot. Smiling at me.

“Who do we have here?” he asks.

"This is Gypsy, Mack.”  Sliding off, we make our way through the back yard, opening up the gate we go back by the gardens and barn. Walking into the little pasture, I take him into the barn.  Taking all the stuff off him, I put his halter on and walk him to the little pasture.

“Mack, where did this hay come from?" Looking over at him he’s got a grin on his face.

“From across the street; we filled the loft with 100 bales while you were gone,” he says coming up behind me wrapping his arms around me.

“You knew what he wanted to show me? And you didn’t say anything?”

He starts laughing. “Yes I knew, but he asked me not to say anything. Egypt, I think it’s his way of saying sorry,” nuzzling my ear, he says.

Watching Gypsy eating the hay, I cannot believe I have him. Smiling, we head to the house to get dinner. Today was a good day. Everything turned out, no one got hurt and I got the horse of my dreams. Making our way up on the deck, we are greeted by my family and our friends. Life is good for now.

Grabbing a plate, I pile the food on and go sit on the deck to eat. Mack sits next to me as we start. At our table is Pete, Hank, Sal, Todd, and now, Nick.

“Did we get the stuff for the fence?” I ask Sal.

“Yep, a good start four guys will go get more tomorrow while the rest of us will get to building,” he says.

“Mack, did you get done with what you wanted to?” I ask, taking a bite of my roast.

“Yep, the lists are in your office for you, to look at in the morning,” he says.

We finish up eating and go sit by the fire. It is nice to have nothing to do after dinner today. Tabby walks over and sits next to me.

“Mom, can I go feed Gypsy and put him in the barn for the night?” she asks.

“You bet, just be careful. He's not used to humans it’s been a while for him.”

Standing up, she kisses me on the cheek and tells me she will see me in the morning. Before taking off and running to the barn. Shaking my head, some things will never change.  The boys come over and tell me goodnight. Looking over at Mack, I grin.

"OK, guys, I think we’re going to head to bed,” he says with a wink.  Picking me up, we say our goodnight. Looking over at Nick, he slowly smiles, bowing his head. Mack doesn’t wait any longer and before I know it we are in the shower making love.

Afterward in bed cuddled up next to him, he tells me about his day and I tell him about mine. This is perfect, I could not ask for anything more. He blows out the candles and we snuggle in for the night.

There is pounding on our door that wakes me, the alarm is blaring in the background. Jumping up, I throw on a pair of yoga shorts and a tank top. Mack opens the door, Nate is standing there looking freaked.

“What’s going on?” I ask, rushing out the door to command, the hallway is packed with people. Pushing them out of my way, I make it to the door.

“MOM,” Nate grabs my arm to stop me. “Some weird guy is out there saying his name is Lane?” he tells me quickly. Looking over at Mack I know he’s thinking the same thing.

"GO! Open the gate and let them in,” I yell, turning to the front door I run out to the gate waiting for it to open. Finally, when it is open five guys, including Lane, stumble in.

“Get me water and food NOW,”I tell John. He runs back into the house. Nate closes the gates.  Bending down, I sit next to Lane as he's trying to catch his breath. John comes back passing out water and food to everyone.

“Egypt, darling, you look sexy as hell, like usual,” he says, flipping his hand in the air. I hold back a laugh, looking up at Mack he just rolls his eyes.

“What are you doing here, Lane?” I ask looking at the other guys. “You know what, hold that thought. Are you hurt?”

“No, no, I’m fine but my guys are. They are not bit, I promise you that, Egypt,” he says.

“Pete, get some help and take them to the living room and treat them. They can stay with Chris and Zach,” I say to him. Looking at Lane. “Why don’t you come with us to my room you can shower then we will talk in my office.”

Lane gets a sexy grin on his face. “So you tire of the big boy over there, I just knew there was something between us,” he says, grabbing my hand.  This time I do laugh and loudly.

“Big boy and I are married, there sexy,” I say laughing. We slowly make our way to my room where Lane goes and takes a shower. Mack and I go to my office and wait for him. He takes about ten minutes and comes back looking human again.

“So tell me what happened?”

“We ran into tons of zombies in what’s called Salem. They took out most of my men. We are all that’s left,” he says. You can tell he is pissed. “We tried joining this other group about twenty miles from Salem, but they were assholes. So I remembered you telling me where you guys were, so here we are.”

"You are welcome to stay here, Lane. We have an RV open that you can use, but know this, I am in charge and you will help out here every day like the rest of us. As you know that horde is heading this way and we have to reinforce everything. I think our best bet to survive all this, is to hunker down and stay put,” I say looking over at Mack.

“I thank you, Egypt. Myself and all the men will help in any way we can," he says. The door bursts open and in come Hank, Nick, and Pete. This can’t be good. Looking over at Nick, he’s got a piece of paper in his hands.

“Egypt, we got problems, Tomas and Liam took off,” Hank says. Standing up, I hold onto the desk so I do not fall over, I notice Mack coming closer to me.

“What the hell do you mean took off?” I yell.

Nick hands me the note I read it.

Mom,

Sal, Tomas and I are going to be gone for a few days. Tomas wanted to check out the mall for some chicks… Don’t worry I’ll be fine.

I love you, Liam

Gripping the letter in my hand, I look over at Hank. “How long of a head start do they have?” I ask angrily.  Nick clears his throat looking over at him. ‘’Do you have anything to add, Nick?"

“Just that they are not alone Sal went with…” Walking over to him, I push him against the wall

“Don’t you fucking say it, Nick.” Mack grabs me and pulls me away gently.

“Egypt, think about it. Nick is right, it might be better to give them a few days, than go looking. I can’t even think that Sal would let anything happen to them,” he says quickly. Everyone quiet for a few minutes.

“I’m going to kill Sal,” I say with anger in my voice.

“I can’t wait to see that,” everyone says in unison.
