Manor House 03 - For Whom Death Tolls (24 page)

"Let us hope there will never be a need for me to get involved in murder again."

"Too right. You've had a lucky escape. Now all we have to worry about is who will win that baseball game with the Yanks."

Martin coughed. "And what, pray, is a baseball?"

Violet sighed. "You tell him. You've got more patience than I have."

"It's a game like rounders," Elizabeth said. "You hit the ball and run around a square to get home before the ball does."

Martin frowned. "I've never seen a ball run around a square before. Must be a special kind of ball."

"No, you silly old fool," Violet burst in. "The ball doesn't run around the square . . ."

Elizabeth sat back, content to listen to them bickering. Things were back to normal. Now she could pay attention to the repair bills, and the rents due, and the baseball game, and an occasional glass of sherry in the conservatory with Earl at her side. She had a lot to look forward to, and if she felt a pang of regret at the loss of excitement of a murder investigation, she refused to dwell on it. Knowing that she could bump into Earl Monroe at any given moment was all the excitement she needed.
