Liverpool Taffy (50 page)

‘Biddy, I do love you! Come on, let’s run down the hill and tell my Da he’s on – he and Menna can take over that old pub as soon as they like and we’ll move in here. Oh, I’ve just thought of something!’

‘What? Not something bad, I trust?’

‘Well, cariad, it depends on your viewpoint. Only one spare bed we do have at Stryd Pen, and that’s the big double in the back room. I’m afraid that they’ll expect us to share it.’

Biddy squeezed his hand and started to run, tugging him behind her. ‘So we’ll get us a dear little baby, like Ellen’s Bobby,’ she shouted, and the words were torn from her mouth by the wind of their going, but Dai heard every one. ‘Come on, I’ll race you!’

Hand in hand, they pelted down the hill and disappeared into the tall house in Stryd Pen. And presently the lamp was lit in the big back bedroom, and the soft golden light was like a beacon in the dark, leading weary mariners home.
