Lesser of Two Evils (12 page)

“Eww.” She covered her face. “I
know people have sex,” she said to the face he was making. “I just don’t want
to talk to them while they do it.”

Ethan laughed and leaned across the
space between them to kiss her.

“I’m glad she found someone she
could love. She never loved my father. It was arranged.” Ethan  scowled. “No,
not like us. He didn’t love her, he only loved to abuse her and me,” she finished
quietly.

“Are you happy here?” he asked.he
smiled. “Yes. I am happy here, now. Arranged or not, I think we’ll be okay. I
love you, Ethan. When I was locked up, all I could think about was you. I was
worried you would never know how I felt or how much I really did want you.”

“Come here.” Ethan pulled her into
his lap and held her close. “I love you, too, and next week I am taking you on
a proper honeymoon. We are going to see the ocean. I want you to have that
experience.”

“That was more Mom’s dream than
mine, but I’ll take it because it’s a honeymoon with you.” She kissed his mouth
softly and smiled. “Now let’s eat, I’m starved.” Kerry hopped down from his lap
and sat back in her seat to finish her lunch.

Epilogue

“Ethan, it’s beautiful.” They’d
arrived before dawn, and their luggage was still in the SUV parked at the hotel.
Kerry was sitting on the beach watching the tide come in and the sun come up.
She had a cup of coffee in one hand and a donut in the other. They’d left at
midnight after making love, and Ethan drove like a maniac to get here for this
moment. He wanted her to have this first. The sunrise was beautiful with the
pink and gold clouds streaking the sky, a myriad colors that she knew she would
never be able to capture with her paints.

Her mom had called her back
yesterday around dinner time and told her that she and Michael were, in fact,
mated and that she was marked. His first project, she said, was to tear down
the house where she’d been abused by that worthless wolf for all those years.
She also insisted that Ethan take her dowry back. He’d insisted it was a
wedding present, so they were keeping it and building a new house for the
Alpha. Ava was helping them scrub the “Luke smell” out of the house they were
living in now. She’d already found a stash of money that he’d been hoarding
while they all starved. Kerry was happy that her mother would finally have a
mate that treated her well.

Ava told them that the council was
making them all renew their contracts because they’d lost two enforcers in the
past year since the contracts had lapsed. They loved what they did. The pay and
the excitement kept them happy. They were all happy to comply.

“Do you like it?” She felt his
breath on her ear then his lips under it.

“Hmm.”

“The sunrise, I know you like
this.”

“It’s so beautiful.”

“You’re more beautiful.” She
scoffed. “I can’t wait to get you to the room.” She smiled softly. “Are you
happy?”

“I am happy.” She looked away from
the sunrise and up into her mate’s face. “My mom chose well.”

“The lesser of the two evils?” He
grinned at her, and she felt her face get hot. The sun had nothing on her
embarrassment.

“I’m sorry that I said that. You’re
so much better than that.”

“I should’ve picked you up in my
enforcer clothes.” Kerry couldn’t stifle the smile that crept onto her face. “I
brought them with me,” he whispered, and she trembled. He was sexy in all of
that leather. “I’ll surprise you with them.” She heard a splash and looked back
at the water. A pod of dolphins was jumping in and out of the water not far off
shore. “Two seconds?” Kerry laughed.

“No, she hates water.” Kerry
finished her donut.

“They probably don’t taste good
anyway.”

“They’re too beautiful.”

“You’re too beautiful. Let’s check
in and we’ll go see our suite.” Kerry followed him up the beach to the hotel,
knowing this was the beginning of a beautiful life. Her mother was settled and
happy. Luke was locked up for good. Her father was gone and couldn’t hurt them
anymore. She felt in her bones that everything was going to be good now. She
could live her life happily with her mate, the lesser of the two evils.
