How We Lived (Entangled Embrace) (15 page)

“The poem on here. It’s beautiful.”

Kneeling, I nudged him out of the way.

If tears could build a stairway,

and memories a lane,

I would walk right up to Heaven

and bring you back again.

My mouth dropped. “That’s mine.”

“That’s your poem?”

“No. I didn’t write it or anything, but that’s the poem I picked out. Mom and Dad must have changed it. They wanted some lame quote about the sun and flowers or something, but this was mine.”

Chase slipped his hand around my shoulders and squeezed. “It’s perfect, Kels.”

No wonder Mom mentioned the headstone earlier. They’d done this for me.

I took the figurine of Superman from my front pocket and placed it on the ledge of the base. Kyle, my brother. Kyle, a real hero. Kyle, who used to run around in a red cape Mom made for him.

“That’s even more perfect.” The tilt of Chase’s head told me he was remembering Kyle the same way. Red cape flapping behind him, fist stiff in the air, and nothing but determination in his eyes.

Kyle may have been gone, but he was my superhero. Always had been. Always would be.

Acknowledgments

To my family—This book is for us. There’s a certain comfort in knowing that other people feel as you do. I don’t need to explain loss to you and how, even though time keeps going and things keep changing, it never goes away. I think you’ll recognize yourself within these pages. You’ll recognize the grief and the pain, but I hope you also see the “after” and the “living”. Because living, not to get preachy or anything, is what they would want us to do. So, thank you, to each and every one of you, for making my living easier.

To Tommy—You’re my after. I know it in my heart they sent you to me and I’m so happy that I get to spend the rest of my days with you.

Thank you to my first readers, Sarah, Ashley, Shannon, and Rosie. You guys gave me the encouragement to send this baby out and I’m so thankful you did.

And lastly, a huge, sweeping bow to Heather Howland who—and I still can’t believe I get to say this—wanted my book. Thank you to you, and Kari Olson, for making Chase and Kelsey’s story what it is now.

About the Author

Erin Butler is lucky enough to have two jobs she truly loves.
