She liked the sound of that. Not to mention the prospect of lying naked with him again. Yet one aspect still troubled her.
She cradled his jaw in her palms. “Nathan, I have to know. Do you still not want a son?”
A rueful look came over his face. “I should never have said such a terrible thing. I was furious at my father, but I've put all that behind me now. Can you ever forgive me? I do very much want for us to have children.”
Taking his hand, she placed it over her abdomen. “Then this baby shall be my gift to you.”
His green eyes widened. “What? Are you trulyâ”
“Indeed so,” Maddy said, laughing at his stunned expression. “We're to have a child just after the new year. The physician confirmed it yesterday.”
“My God! Did you suspect it when I made that awful statement to you, then?”
“Yes, you jackanapes, and you may spend the rest of your life making it up to me.”
He fervently kissed her brow. “With great pleasure.”
As they strolled arm in arm to the door, Maddy stopped to glance around the empty shop, envisioning it as it would be someday. She leaned against her husband. “I was an upstart actress who sold herself to you at auction. Now I'm going into trade. I'm afraid I won't ever be a proper society wife.”
Nathan's mouth curved in a wicked smile that put his gorgeous dimples on display. “Then we shall be improper together. Today and every day for the rest of our lives.”
