The two of them seemed to be conspiring against him, taking forever to load the dishwasher. They insisted on scrubbing and drying each pot and pan. He wanted to shout at them to leave the dishes, but Charlotte seemed determined to make sure the kitchen was cleaner than when they started.
Finally, they all gathered by the tree. He’d already put the logs in the fireplace and the blaze was heating up the room.
While he should probably wait until after the presents were open before giving El her gift, he couldn’t wait. When both women were seated, Vic moved in front of El. The first time he’d proposed, he hadn’t dropped to one knee. He was too cool for that back then.
This time he did. Her eyes widened, hopefully in surprise and delight, and Charlotte squeaked.
“Eleanor Hart, you’ve made me the happiest man so many times—when you married me the first time, when you gave me the most wonderful daughter in the world, and when you came back after five long years of me wanting you.”
Her chin quivered. He had to look away. If he didn’t, he might cry. He had to shift on his other knee to tug the small case from his pocket. “I’m not sure if you still like this style of ring, but it was the best I could do on short notice.”
When he flipped over the case, El gasped. “It’s beautiful.”
“I guess the only thing left to say is El, will you marry me?”
He hadn’t expected the tears, but he sure enjoyed the hug.
“Mo-om. It’s not official unless you say yes!”
They all laughed. “Then by all means I want to make it official. Yes, yes, and yes!”
All Vic knew was that the next fifty years were going to be better than the last.

(3) I also like to exercise. Yes, I know I’m odd. Not only do I walk with different women each week, I teach Pilates twice a week at a local rec center, and lift weights the other days.
