Domenico squeezed his
hand around the phone with the same strength something clenched in his stomach.
“The cartel.”

“I know Seth can have a
simple facade, but it looks that he’s not completely stupid. We had a long chat
with Elephant, and it turns out Seth has made a deal for your head on the
Mexican side. He’ll get protection, they’ll get your head for that job you did
for us back in May.” There was a heart-stopping pause. “I would miss you.” It
was as if a cold tongue reached out of the phone and licked his ear.

A low rumble escaped
Domenico’s throat as adrenaline rushed into his bloodstream. He was afraid to
look back at Seth. “I would hunt you,” he whispered, surprised it sounded
almost like a lover’s voice.

“You don’t have to do
that, Domenico. My arms are open. But that ticket is valid for just one
person.”

Domenico swallowed. A
lover would not talk to him like this. “I’d rather break your arms.”

“You want to take on the
whole Family
and
the cartel?” Frederico laughed. “I applaud your
confidence, but you’re not invincible. And do you even want to travel with
someone who will stab you in the back beyond the border? The sex can’t be
that
good.”

The sex definitely
was
that good. “Why do you care?”

“We made a good team.
I’d hate to lose that over a piece of ass.”

Domenico snorted,
overcome with a strange lightness in his head. “I don’t even remember your face
anymore.”

“Maybe you were always
too focused on my cock,” said Frederico, but Dom’s heart leaped. There it was.
He’d managed to annoy the guy.

“I’ve had better. The
one I’m having now’s definitely better,” he said, stealing a glance at Seth,
even though uncertainty tugged on his heart. Would Seth really sell him out?

“I’ve heard that in
Mexico, the cock is one of the first things they cut off. But that’s only if we
don’t get to you first. And we will. I’m giving you a chance, Dom. Don’t take
it lightly.”

“Better stay where you
belong, Frederico, or I might come for you when you least expect it,” Dom said,
as his dam broke. He hated this man with everything that he was. There was
something about this tone, so thick with self-assured untouchability. And
Domenico hated being under someone’s thumb.

“Oh, a threat. I love
those. It’s going to make receiving pieces of your body so much more
disappointing. And you do know Seth will die first, right?”

“You’d have to up your
game quite radically.”

“Oh don’t worry about
that. I know where you are.”

“I know, but it’s not
good enough, is it?”

“You better fuck him
every day, because there aren’t many of those days left,” Frederico said and
hung up. And somehow Dom knew this guy loved having the last word.

Domenico got up and
stretched out his hand toward the woman. “Get out before you go down with
pneumonia.”

She eyed him cautiously,
stealing glances at the gun in Seth’s hand as well. “I’m sure we can come to an
arrangement. I don’t have a grudge against you. Maybe this project was a bit
too ambitious for me.”

Seth groaned. “You
think?”

Domenico bit the inner
side of his cheek. He did not want to deal with a body right now. “You know who
I am?”

She put her bloodied
face in her hands. “You’re Animal Control. You hate dogs,” she mumbled.

Seth looked at Dom in
shock and mouthed ‘the fuck?’.

Domenico scowled. He
counted on something along the lines of Black Viper, or some shit like that.
“Do I?”

She looked up at them
with a frown. “Yeah. You burned that cop’s dog a few years back. I tried to
follow your steps, but you’re not easy to track.”

Domenico snorted and
pushed back his hair, looking into her blue eyes. “I will kill women if they
stand in my way. And you attacked me and broke my fiancé’s nose.”

Seth touched his face
with a frown. “Oh my God! You think it’s broken? And why did you kill a dog?
What’s wrong with you?”

Domenico frowned. “It is
broken,” he said and ignored the question he clearly couldn’t answer.

Dana raised her hands.
“And you broke mine, so I guess we’re even? I’ll tell Frederico I did my best.
No hard feelings? I mean, you were always such an inspiration. Always under the
radar. I bit off more than I could chew.” She tried a smile, but with all the
blood on her face, it wasn’t pretty.

Domenico leaned back,
staring at her. “If I ever see you again, I will fuck you with my bullets.”

Seth shook his head and
put the safety on his gun. “Seriously? A dog?” he mumbled.

“Since when do you care
about some random pup?” asked Dom, telling the woman to stand up with a
gesture. She followed the order and got a towel off the floor to cover her
face.

Seth did the same, as if
following her lead. “I don’t know. It’s different when you’re hunting. But it’s
not like you ate the dog. He didn’t eat it, did he?”

Dana slowly shook her
head. “No, they found the body in the burned building.”

“Roasted and not eaten.
Such a shame,” Dom said, walking behind the woman, ready to act if she tried
anything funny. The conversation with Frederico still had him unsettled, and he
wasn’t entirely sure whether he should share his doubts with Seth, so he chose
to wait it out. Seth didn’t seem worried about Dom talking to Frederico, so if
he was planning to sell him, he didn’t know Frederico was aware of it.

“You’re disgusting,”
Seth muttered, walking as the last of their bloodied group. Domenico picked up
his shoes on the way, and at least he was presentable. Fortunately they didn’t
meet anyone on the way through the corridor on the first floor.

“Anything we should
know, beautiful?” asked Domenico as they took the stairs. “Where are the
others, and how did you find us?”

“It’s just me for now.
They know what your fake passports are, so I managed to track you by your RV
registration paperwork. They paid a visit to your friend, Elephant.” Her words
were muffled through the towel and she looked over her shoulder every now and
then.

Domenico’s heart froze,
and he couldn’t help but glance at Seth. This was the name Frederico gave as
Seth’s contact.

“Apparently he doesn’t
take pressure well.” Dana raised her eyebrows suggestively.

“What did he tell them?
What do you know?” Seth hissed at her, his nape reddening by the second.
Domenico looked ahead as his windpipe constricted, allowing him only a limited
stream of air. But he said nothing. He would watch Seth. He would kill anyone who
was after them. And he would kill Seth if Frederico didn’t lie. He’d kill
Frederico last.

All the signs were there
that Seth was genuinely in love with him, but people did strange things when
under pressure. Maybe the cartel was something Seth wanted to keep in his back pocket,
to be pulled out if needed.

Dana glanced back at
Seth, who approached her from the side. “All sorts of things, pretty boy.”

“Which is?” asked
Domenico, gently pulling his fingers across Seth’s nape.

“Which is nothing,” Seth
groaned.

“We all have our secrets
I suppose,” Dana said.

“Do
you
?” asked
Domenico as they walked into their room. If he was chased by the mafia, he
would not be squeamish about piling up bodies.

She looked back at him.
“Let’s just get this over with, huh? What happens now?”

Seth picked up on that
in an instant. “Yeah, let’s just leave her and go.”

"You
go with us," Domenico said as he gestured for Seth to deal with their
sparse luggage. “I want to know more about you, Dana.”

Their
eyes met, and there was no spark of happiness there. “Will I get to fix my
nose?” she asked.

Seth
rushed around their room and packed the few things they’d taken out of the RV.
Dom didn’t like his nervous movements one bit.

“It
doesn’t look that bad,” Dom said, even though it was slightly crooked. He could
deal with that in the vehicle. At least Seth’s was not deformed, it would
probably heal on its own.

“Dom,
you wanna keep those soaps?” Seth yelled from the bathroom, and Dana burst out
laughing.

“You
have a problem?” asked Domenico, leaving the question unanswered.

Dana
raised her hands. “Nope, not at all. Life is full of surprises.”

“You
just pray I don’t mistake you for a dog,” Dom said, pulling her toward the
door. He wanted her out of people’s sight and soon. She didn’t comment on that,
and after making sure Seth dealt with formalities, he took Dana to their RV,
constantly watching her. He noticed she was slowing down every now and then,
but it looked like something hurt in her side. A broken rib maybe.

“You
got a nice place here,” she said, looking around their vehicle. Most probably
for ways out. Dom still wasn’t sure if he’d kill her or not.

“Thanks,
it’s the honeymoon van. Needs to be nice,” Domenico said, pulling out the
handcuffs he got off her. With all windows obscured
by blinds, he
could safely do what he intended.

“Sooo…”
She licked her lips. “I wouldn’t want to be a third wheel.”

“We
don’t fuck women,” he assured her, gesturing to a metal rack where some other
furniture used to be. It was screwed hard to the wall and very solid.

Dana
sat down and held out her hand to get cuffed. “So when do I get to be on my
way?”

“No
idea.” Domenico cuffed her hand and pulled the chain through the rack before
closing the second cuff around her other wrist. She didn’t fight it. Wise
choice.

Dana
looked at his hands. “They had some of your fingerprints after that dog thing.
I wondered how you managed to sneak through different countries for so many
years. Now I know. Did it hurt to get that done?”

Domenico
looked up at her, and he turned his hand to look at his fingertips, strange,
thick, and smooth. He didn’t remember, but he did
know
. “Yes. Why, you
want to follow my example?”

“I
might need to one day.” She smiled at him, which looked grotesque with the dry
blood on her face, but there was no flirting there. Another smart move.

Domenico
pulled off his jacket and put it on the sofa. “I need to search you. I’m sure you
understand,” he said, walking over to the kitchen to get a pair of latex
gloves.

She
sighed. “You already took my weapons, and you’ve got my cell phone.”

“We’ll
be leaving that,” Dom said and swiftly threw the cell outside.

“You
seemed to have a long chat with Frederico…”

Domenico
came closer and pulled up her skirt, revealing a pink pair of panties. He gave
a mental sigh and pulled them lower but kept his gaze on Dana’s face. “Are you
two close?”

She
tensed up, losing all her fake humor. “No. Just get on with it.”

Domenico
sighed and reached between her thighs. He wasn’t sure where exactly he should
look so he pressed two fingers against her pussy and pushed down until the
fingertips dipped inside. He could feel the warmth of Dana’s vagina, but he
kept his face straight and searched the hole without any results, which was
good. Would a woman hide something in her ass? He had no idea, but he decided
to check that side too.

The
door to the side slid open wide. “I’ve sorted everything out. I told the receptionist
I slipped on the stairs, and they gave me cookie-- what the fuck?” Seth scowled
and dropped the bag in his hand.

Dana
rolled her eyes. “Jesus Christ.”

“Close
the door,” Domenico muttered, slipping his fingers out of her asshole. He
quickly pulled the gloves off and dropped them into the trash. Was he to dress
her now? What if she got her period and bled all over the place?

It
was as if she was reading his mind. “Can you pull my pants up?”

Seth
shut the door and stayed outside until Dom dealt with pussy. He was feeling
generous and gave Dana a blanket to sit on before slipping outside to join
Seth. They needed to talk, so he left Dana in the pair of bigass earphones Seth
got a few days ago. Seth claimed they had great muting properties and let him get
‘swallowed by the music’. They would serve their purpose.

They
were the only people in the parking lot, and it was getting dark already, but
at least the snowstorm had passed. Seth got close to Dom. “What are we gonna do
with her?” he whispered, expecting Dom to have all the answers. Would Seth
really risk being stranded? An arrangement with the cartel?

Even
if Seth didn’t love Domenico as much as he seemed to, Domenico didn’t want to
doubt him. He wanted to be with Seth. “I don’t know yet.”

He
could almost hear the alarm bells going off in Seth’s head. “What if I get an
infection?” Seth pointed to his poor crooked nose.

Domenico
frowned, looking at the swollen skin. “No. Of course not. I’ll just take a
better look at it, but it should be fine,” he whispered, gently brushing his
hand against Seth’s. He liked the hair on it.
