“Our only part is as witnesses.” He popped her toes, setting
off tremors of delight. “So, did Dave ever offer you a job?”
“No, but Phil gave me a promotion. Dave ever fire you?”
“No, but no promotion either.” He grinned. “I have something
in my pocket for you.”
“I’m in the mood for loving, but not games tonight. So
consider yourself officially red-lighted.”
He stretched out beside her. “You don’t even want to see
it?” He extended his hand. A small blue velvet box rested on his palm.
“Oh god.” She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Tears
pooled.
“Open it.”
“Oh god.” Her fingers shook and those blasted tears streaked
to her chin when she saw the diamond ring inside.
“You were supposed to get that six months ago.”
“Oh, Russell.” And she’d ruined everything.
“Marry me?”
“Well duh.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.” He plucked the ring from its nest
and slipped it onto her finger.
“You realize we’ll probably have to face off again in court
one day.” She slipped her arms around him, holding her ring hand high to catch
the light while he nibbled her neck.
“And I expect you to come at me full on, with
no-holds-barred.” He dragged his lips toward her chest. “And when we come home
at night…”
