examined the barrel of the Glock, then placed it down on the oil rag in front
of him. He had disassembled the gun and placed the thirty-odd pieces on the
table in their order of re-assembly.
He now nodded,
satisfied every part was spotless and in perfect working order. He bounced off
his chair and fumbled for his cellphone as it vibrated in his pocket, then
fished it out and answered.
“Rogers.”
“Good day, Major
Rogers,” came Senator Kepler’s grave reply.
“Senator.”
“How is Jessy
doing?”
Rogers pursed his
lips. The subject always came up, and his reply was always the same. Damn, it
had been three years already. “She’s fine, thank you, Senator. Thank you for
the money for the operation, I wish I could make it...,”
“It was my
pleasure, Major, I’m glad to hear that the little darling is feeling better,”
he answered with a smoke-cured voice.
Rogers sighed and
waited for the request.
“I need your help
with a little problem I have, Major,” the Senator said smoothly.
“Yes, Senator?”
“I need a certain
man, how should I put it...?”
“Eliminated?”
“Yes, that’s
right. You took the words right out of my mouth,” the Senator said with a
chuckle.
Major Seth Rogers
pulled open a drawer in his desk, scratched around inside and retrieved a
notepad and pencil. He pinched the phone to his ear with his shoulder and
asked, “Who is he?”
“His name is
Richard Davenport, he works up at the Daily Tribune.”
“And this is on a
need to know, I guess?”
“Yes, a need to
know.”
“And it will be
my final job I do for you?”
Senator Kepler
chuckled. “Absolutely, Major. Abso-damn-lutely.”
