EMIT (THE EMIT SAGA) (50 page)

Sighing as he sat down, Daniel turned to me and said, “Juliette’s working on a new case and has to go to London.”

Not wanting to sound paranoid, nevertheless, I had to ask, “Do you believe her?”

Daniel looked at me apprehensively and seemed to be debating his response. Guardedly, he asked, “Why would you ask that?”

Suddenly, I felt pathetic. “I don’t know, it’s a feeling I get,” I admitted sheepishly.

“I had the same gut reaction. When we land, I’ll call James and find out for sure.”

“Was this the only flight she could take?”

Daniel shook his head and made a smirk, “I have no idea. Maybe she didn’t know we were on this one.”

“Sure,” I said cynically.

Knowing she was on the plane, really bothered me, but there was nothing I could do about it.

Suddenly Juliette was standing right next to me and greeted me warmly, “Paige, nice to see you again.”

Before I could answer, she looked over my head and said, “Daniel, I was told to tell you to contact the London office when
we land.”

Daniel nodded and she walked away. There was no more contact between the three of us for the rest of the flight. Every time I passed Juliette on the way to the rest room, she appeared to be sleeping.

By pretending that she didn’t exist, Daniel and I had a great time on the plane to London.
