He scoffed. “Your voice is asking for something not neighborly at all.”
“You sound scared.” Once the words left her mouth Penelope knew she had him. Men like him couldn't say no to a challenge, much less leave one that questioned their reputation.
“Intrigued,” he said as a rebuttal. “Where's this need to walk on the dark side come from?”
She smiled and played for light and her heart raced, because he hadn't said no. “After this last date, I've come to the conclusion I'm probably going to die single. Might as well have some fun before I go.” She paused. “Plus, I'm standing right here with you now and you needed to find someone else five minutes ago.”
“Very persuasive.” He sounded impressed.
“I teach kindergarten. Have to be.”
“Right.” His head tilted back as he considered the proposition. His lips pulled in a Cheshire-like grin, and he met her gaze with a gleam in his eye that gave her a moment of worry. “You can go with me, but let's make things interesting.”
