Aïe
, she’d done some damage, but then the asshole would have probably raped her before he killed her, given the chance. She pistol-whipped him and his hollering suddenly stopped, like she’d cut power to a blown speaker. He lay there on the cobblestones, drool and snot running from his mouth and nose. She reached down and checked his pulse with shaky fingers. Good, he was still alive. Though he’d probably wish he wasn’t when he woke.

She straightened, tucked the gun into her waistband, liking the feel of it on her person, and turned to see how Ivan fared. The lizard was kissing concrete too.

Ivan adjusted his jacket. He wasn’t even breathing hard. But then neither was she. There was a considerable amount of pride to be taken in that, so she did, giving Ivan a bedazzling smile.

He frowned. “I don’t like your friends.”

“They’re no friends of mine.”

A police siren split the silent evening.

“Come on.” She grabbed his hand, but he flipped his wrist fast and had hers in his grip before she could blink.

Yeah, he was exactly who she needed.

“You are coming with me.” He held up her calling card. “Besides, you owe me a drink.” He dragged her off to the left around the building and back down toward the harbor, anchoring an arm around her shoulders and settling a considerable amount of his weight on them.

Now why did getting what she wanted suddenly have a chill skittering up her spine?
