Brie smiled. “Mr. Holloway, the staff at the Center stand behind what they do. I believe they are committed to giving an accurate picture of what submission can look like.”

She was surprised that he frowned. Everything had appeared to be going well, but he definitely did not look happy and she felt the air leave her lungs.

“This has been a shitty week. No, the reality is that the last two months have been shitty. The last thing I wanted today was to like your work. I don’t need the hassle. In truth, all I want to do is take a long vacation and forget the last few months ever happened. But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now.”

Brie was finally able to breathe again. “I’m pleased to hear that, Mr. Holloway.”

“I bet you are,” he snarled, as if she had wronged him by creating quality work. “I’ll show this around to a couple of my friends and get back to you next week. Looks like I’ll be scrapping my last project in lieu of this one.”

Brie stood up and gave him a firm handshake. “That is excellent news. I look forward to hearing from you.”

She started towards the door, hardly feeling the floor beneath her feet.

“Oh, Miss Bennett. I highly suggest you take a vacation within the next couple of days. You won’t have any downtime once the ball starts rolling.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, Mr. Holloway. Thank you.”

“I’m serious—tell Davis he’d better set it up now, because I won’t tolerate complaints later on that he never has time with his sub.”

“I’ll be sure to inform him, sir.”

“Good.” He waved her off as he picked up the phone and growled at his receptionist. “Get in here, damn it. We’ve got to revamp the whole fucking schedule…”

Brie shut the door behind her and walked towards Sir with a grin she could not hide. His confident smile greeted her. “I take it that it went well?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“How well?”

“He said you should set up a vacation this week because there won’t be any breaks in the foreseeable future.”

His eyes lit up. “You did it!”

“I did it, Sir.”

His warm laughter filled the office. “My babygirl, a famous filmmaker.”

“Not yet, Sir, but soon.”

He kissed her, still smiling when their lips met. “I think I will take the good producer at his word and arrange a quick trip. There is one place in particular we need to go,” he informed her, as he rested his hand on the small of her back and guided her down the hallway.

“Where’s that Sir?” Brie had expected he would say Russia, but what came out of his mouth completely surprised her.

“We need to revisit Nebraska.”

Brie nearly tripped over her feet. “Nebraska, Sir?”

“Something this important must be done in person.”

In one fell swoop, he had sucked away all the joy she had previously felt. Speaking with her parents was going to be an exceedingly difficult conversation. “Very well, Sir.”

“I will not answer any questions on the subject,” he replied. But once they had left the building, Sir lifted her up and slung her over his shoulder, slapping her hard on the butt.

Brie squealed, trying to wiggle out of his arms. “What was that for, Sir?”

“That was your congratulations spanking.”

Her attitude immediately changed. “Oh, well then, I’d like another, Sir.”

“Too bad, my dear. You must wait.” He set her down with a smirk.

“You are a cruel Master.” She pouted as a group of businesswomen hurried by, staring at them reproachfully.

Brie’s loins tingled as she followed him. She glanced back, noting the people walking on the sidewalk less than fifteen yards away.
