“God, no. She gets real grumpy when anyone questions her too much. And she really doesn’t like it when I talk at all. Janie has to do all the talkin’ or Morgan starts yellin’.” Maryann pulled a pink strip of gum from her pocket, unwrapped it and folded it into her mouth. She smacked the gum while waiting for Abby to respond.

Abby could really see how Morgan would get annoyed with the girl. She didn’t seem to have a mute button.

“Ok, then let’s try another tactic. How did you get mixed up with Morgan?” This time Abby faced Janie, hoping that the older sibling would jump in before they all had to listen to another mind numbing tirade from Maryann.

“She comes into the village once a week with Marius.” Janie shrugged. “She doesn’t ask much from us but she’s backed by some important leaders in our community so anyone who needs a few extra bucks signs up for some duty, depending on their age and skill set.”

“Yeah. We get stuck with this.” Maryann slapped the notepad that Abby clutched in her hand. “We don’t really have any skills, she said. Here’s something you can’t screw up, she said. I guess we showed her. No address book to be found. Leave it to us to screw up the easy assignment.”

Abby rolled her eyes, trying desperately to keep her temper in check. “I think it’s time you guys get out of here.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” Janie grabbed Maryann’s hand and pulled her towards the door.

Abby pushed it open to let the girls out but stopped short seeing Leus standing on the other side of the door.

“I was just looking for you.” He locked eyes with Abby before glancing at the rest of her body to check for injuries.

Abby felt a wave of discomfort at the sudden inspection and her face heated up thanks to the unwanted scrutiny.

“What are you two doing here?” Leus growled when he finally pried his gaze from Abby and spotted the two young girls.
