Trapper was laughing as he came towards Buck and me. Buck looked up and yelled, “What’s the matter with you? Get help for Jim!”

Buck fell back when I yelled at him to get off my chest. His eyes went wide, and he was speechless as I sat up. Trapper helped me to my feet, and Buck sprang up.

“What the hell, Jim, you aren’t hurt?” I pulled open my shirt to reveal a bulletproof vest. Buck said, “What the hell?”

Trapper asked me, “Just how did you know to ask me for the damn thing? How could you know that you would get shot at?”

I looked at both of them and said, “Penny had a dream I was going to get shot so I was being cautious.”

“Well, score one big one for Penny.” Trapper cheered. I pulled the bullets out of the vest and said I had two more things to put on my office wall. I looked over at Ralph on the floor now being covered by the bailiffs as they cleared the courtroom.

Elma came rushing over and hugged me, saying, “I thought Ralph killed you!”

“Elma, you did real good getting away from Ralph,” Trapper said.

She looked at the covered body of Ralph and said, “Looks like I won’t need a divorce now.” We all laughed.

About an hour after all the excitement died, everyone was heading out. I thanked Buck for his concern and Trapper for the vest. He told me to keep it, but don’t say anything about it. I said I’d treasure it. I got to my car. My chest was starting to hurt a bit less than when I was first hit. I put the vest on the front seat next to me and drove back home.

I got to the front door, and Penny flung it open, saying I wasn’t shot. I pulled her to me and gave her a good tonsil search. She looked at me and asked what brought that on.

“Hold out your hand,” I said, and dropped the two bullets onto her palm. She looked at them and asked, what were they for?

“I’ll never doubt your dreams again.” I took her to the couch and explained what had happened that day and how after she told me that morning about her dream, I borrowed a Kevlar vest from Trapper just as a precaution. Lucky I did. She was tearing up and grabbed on to me. I kissed her cheek and was thankful for her.
