Big Three-Thriller Bundle Box Collection (109 page)

The wind blew between the houses, and the torn page from a newspaper tumbled out. It danced on the ground, then bounced over to Parker and wrapped around his ankle.

He pulled it off. It was old and yellow, torn and dirty.
Old
news. Two months
old
. “
JEZEBEL IS DEAD!
” it seemed to remind him in big, bold letters.

The wind passed through the reed-like boards over the broken window. “
Vvv-foo-au-ooooh!

Parker and Mrs. Crane stared at the house. It was just the wind, he knew that and was sure she did, too. Jezebel
was
dead. Heart attack. Tommy Chin said it. She had quit breathing, he was sure. Her body was incinerated at the animal-control shelter that morning, two months ago. Her body and the other dogs’ that had been put to sleep were all incinerated.

Scenes flashed inside Parker’s head. He started remembering things he hadn’t before. Were they memories of real events or of dreams? He couldn’t tell.

He remembered leaving Sand Creek after the terrible carnage. He remembered driving recklessly. Had he driven to the animal-control shelter? He remembered running in through the back-bay door. Plastic body bags filled with dead animals were stacked on the floor near the incinerator, left there to be burned that morning. He remembered opening the largest one. He’d cupped his hands over the muzzle of a huge, black Great Dane. He’d breathed into its mouth. He’d pushed on its chest.

That’s where the memories ended. There were no more. It must have been a dream, a dream he’d had when he was in ICU at the hospital. It must have been.

Parker turned and got into his minivan. He examined the house as he edged away from the curb.

A flash of light, a reflection
.

The sun’s light shone on something inside the house, and it sparkled from the darkness, shooting out light from between the boards and through the tear in the front window shade like a laser.

Tony Parker felt a burning in his neck as he drove away.

NOVEL WRITING MADE SIMPLE

KNIGHT’S RANSOM

For E Z Knight, when it rains, it pours—and it seldom tastes anything like water.

In this first episode of ”The E Z Knight Reports” series, E Z has a million-dollar contract on his head and a whole boatload of hit men after his ass. Even worse, a young Russian beauty has just handed him a photo of his six-year-old goddaughter wearing a vest wired with enough plastic explosives to bring down the Golden Gate Bridge.

Nowadays, all E Z wants is to be left alone. He seeks an uncomplicated and safe life, living with his golden retriever, Jazzy Brass, on a sailboat in Southern California. But his past won’t cooperate. When, only two minutes before his neighbor’s sailboat blows up in front of him, he’s handed a picture of his best friend’s kidnapped daughter strapped with Semtex, he knows there’ll be no peace today. He’s stared down death more times than he can remember, but death hasn’t come to harvest someone this close to him since his wife was murdered six years ago.

E Z’s former best friend, Jason Ryder, is up for an Oscar, and the man’s newly divorced wife, actress Stella Hutchins, is E Z’s very hot ex-girlfriend. With their little girl in jeopardy, they must put on a facade of normalcy on the biggest night of their lives—that could also be their last.

A walk down the Academy Awards’ Red Carpet is a new experience for an old Leatherneck, but former US Force Recon Marine, E Z Knight isn’t shy. He’d do anything to get his goddaughter back safely—be it by bullet or by bedroom—and he must have a little of both to get to the bottom of this one.

Teaming up with a spicy little Russian who carries a Mach 10, an old woman who flips him the bird every morning, and a couple of his old comrades-in-arms, E Z’s bound to track down little Sophie Ryder’s abductors, rescue her, get her home unharmed, and do away with some very nasty bastards, all in short order. But in the hours to come, a deadly old nemesis returns, and a new team of very lethal assassins strikes at his heart.

E Z never liked killing, but he’s good at it, and the next forty-eight hours are bound to be murder.

KNIGHT’S BIG EASY

In KNIGHT’S BIG EASY:
Voodoo, hoodoo and a girl named Poodoo make this year’s Mardi Gras the most fun but also the most dangerous party of all for E Z Knight.

Knight goes to New Orleans to find Parole Officer Tamara White Cloud’s AWOL USMC son, and finds out L/Cpl Billie White Cloud isn’t the only one who’s gone missing.

He uncovers the largest human trafficking organization since the US slave emancipation. Led by a Voodoo King named Papa Legba, the slave ring preys not only on young runaways and homeless children, but also kidnaps them from their own homes, and then sells them into prostitution and sweat-shop labor.

Knight works with a retired jazz musician named Black Zack who restores old horns in a shop called Jazzy Brass. They team up with FBI Special Agent Pooh Dooley to find Billie and to stop the slave-traders. However, Knight’s old musician sidekick might be more than he appears. Black Zack claims the hay in the back of his truck is for feeding his cousin's goats. But when the pickup the old horn tooter’s driving is run off the road and catches fire, smoke from the alfalfa bales in the back gives Knight a high unlike any he’s had before.

Time is running out. A cargo ship loaded with over 500 children is away to the deepest waters in the Gulf. With the threat of being exposed, Papa Legba has ordered the ship sunk as soon as it reaches Sigsbee Deep. But Knight’s not that worried about dealing with the two-dozen armed men on the slave ship, or the nighttime HALO jump he must make to carry out the rescue—it’s the Voodoo Queen named Marie who won’t rest until she’s turned E Z Knight into a zombie that’s making his skin crawl.

A prequel to Knight’s Ransom, Knight's Big Easy is the second novel in ”The E Z Knight Reports”; a sexy, humorous and irreverent series as well as a somewhat realistic and poignant look at the darker side of life, crime and the human condition. With a modern-day, ramped up "The Rockford Files"/"Magnum PI" feel, a Jack Bauer-capable hero and a "24" pace, it consists of page-turning, episodic novels.
