A_Wanted Man - Alana Matthews (23 page)

Despite her initial shock, Nana Jean told Callie that she was sleeping better than ever at night, and would be around for a long time to come. And true enough, she seemed to have grown stronger over the months, her dizzy spells gone. And for reasons known only to Callie and Harlan, she stopped serving iced tea every afternoon.

Harlan recovered from his gunshot wound and he and Callie went down to Colorado Springs to pack up his apartment and move him to Williamson to live with her and Nana. Before leaving Colorado they stopped by the cemetery and laid flowers at Treacher’s grave, quietly remembering his crooked smile, happy to have known him, if only for a short time.

At Sheriff Mercer’s request, Harlan quit the Marshals Service and took a job with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office where an important vacancy had to be filled. A month later, Harlan got down on one knee and proposed to the only woman he had ever loved.

After nearly eight years on the job Callie took a leave of absence, planning to eat well and get plenty of exercise and sleep.

She was pregnant with their first child.
