An Unintentional Affair (The Affair Series Book 1) (10 page)

“Dave, they need you at
FBI headquarters. Another testimony in this case.” Dave nodded and was out the
door.

We were finally alone
again. “Anyone else you’re expecting that you haven’t told me about?” I asked
in a joking but accusatory tone.

He chuckled. “No, not
tonight.” He ran his fingers through my hair and tucked one lock behind my ear.
“But tomorrow morning Joe will be here at nine-thirty to take you to the
airport. He’ll have the documents for your new identity and will put you on a
plane to where they’re setting you up with a new life.”

I could feel the tears
creeping in again. “That soon?! Don’t I get to say goodbye to anybody?”

“You aren’t safe in
this city, Emily. We need to get you out of here and into that new life as soon
as possible. As far as saying goodbye, I’m afraid that’s not possible. It would
be dangerous for you and anyone you are in contact with.”

“Adam, please come with
me!” I begged.

He had tears in his
eyes again, too. “I can’t, sweetheart. There’s a long way to go to settle this
case, and besides, it’s against policy.

“Policy, schmolicy!
Don’t I get any say in this?” I was sobbing.

“Well, you could refuse
but I wouldn’t advise it. You said it yourself – they’ll find you anywhere.”

“But why won’t they be looking
for me anyway? How do you know they won’t figure it out?”

“We are going to leak
to the press that you were killed in a car accident. If they think you’re out
of the picture, they won’t waste their time looking any further. It’s the best
option.”

“So my family will
think I’m dead, too?”

“I’m afraid so. This is
for your safety and theirs. Unless they have a reason to believe your family
knows something, they won’t touch them. It would be too risky. If you want to
survive this and protect your family, you have to trust us and do what we say.”

The reality of the
whole situation was incomprehensible. In one week, my whole life had been
turned upside down. Inside out, too, for that matter. “I just can’t
fathom
never seeing you again, Adam! This is
so not fair
!”

I was crying so hard I
was shaking. Adam pulled me close and held my head to his chest. I could hear
his heartbeat. He tilted my face up and gave me warm, tender kisses. He
released the embrace and took my hand leading me into the bedroom. Striking a
pose that was now familiar, he sat on the end of the bed with his legs parted
and began undressing me. My sobbing was subsiding, but the tears continued to roll
over my cheeks. He finished unbuttoning my blouse, looked up at me and wiped
the tears from my face. He kissed each cheek gently before his lips met mine. Tears
filtered his gaze.

“Emily Ryan, you take
my breath away.” Slowly he finished undressing me and cradled me, setting me
down gently on the bed. My fear and sadness were gradually replaced with
anticipation and arousal as he slipped out of his clothes and joined me.

“I know this relocation
isn’t going to be easy, but it’s the best thing for you and I’ll feel better
knowing you’re safe.”

 “Adam, I….”

He looked up at me and
put his forefinger over my lips.  “Shhh. Just love me.” He kissed me tenderly
and caressed my breasts. My hands danced over his strong shoulders as his
velvety fingers slid down my torso, through my wetness. My breath hitched as I
relished the sensations. I reached for his thick, hot shaft and circled his crown
with my fingertips. It excited me that he was so aroused. His eyes closed, and
he rolled his head back with a low, erotic moan.

He slid down my body so
I could no longer reach his hardness. Crawling between my legs, he parted my folds
with his tongue. Shock waves began surging through me. He was taunting me. I
clutched the sheets holding on for the ride until the moment of. As he had done
before, he took me almost to climax and shifted positions to prolong my
pleasure. All I could do was give in to his magical touch. The orgasms were explosive.
My entire body trembled. “Oh, Adam!”

After a moment,
catching my breath, I rolled on top of him. I held myself up with extended arms
and stared into his piercing blue eyes. His gaze was so loving, so tender. “You’ll
always be in my heart, I whispered.” I leaned down and licked his lips. Our
tongues danced a very sensual, intimate dance. I slid down, and began teasing
his hot, hard erection with my hands and tongue. Another low, erotic moan
escaped his lips. I took him deeper, and worked with the tip of my tongue. He
grabbed a pillow and propped himself up to watch. He smiled as he looked down
at me and put his hand on top of my head, urging me to take more of him. He
began pumping, his movements opposing mine.

“Oh, God, ohhh..” he
murmurs, moving faster and pushing deeper. “You’re amazing,” he whispered,
closing his eyes and forcing his head back into the pillow, bracing against the
quake shuddering through him. His stomach muscles tensed as I massaged his
balls, and tugged his flesh taut. My lips engulfed his crown. The trickle of
warm fluid escaping from his tip tasted so sweet. He held the top of my head as
he thrust into my mouth and came hard. “Ohhh,” he cried out. I steadied myself
and swallowed, still moving up and down his length as his orgasm continued flow.
His body writhed in ecstasy, and he cried out, again, “Oh, Emily, ohhh!” I
loved exiting him this way.

I gradually slowed my
movements as his hardness ebbed and his muscles began to relax. He lifted me on
top of him so our faces were inches apart. He ran his fingers through my hair
arranging a curl on his chest. “I love you, Em,” he said softly, his voice
cracking slightly as a tear rolled down the side of his face.

“I love you, too,
Adam,” I whispered, trying not to weep openly. We kissed, then I slid down beside
him and rested my head on his shoulder. “I’m really scared, Adam.”

With his arm wrapped
tightly around me, he said softly, “I know you are, sweetheart. The system is
set up to take very good care of you, though. You have to trust that.”

“I get it, but I still
wish you were coming with me.”

He smiled and kissed me
on top of my head. “Me, too.”

We were both exhausted.
It had been a hell of a week. We held each other and drifted off to sleep.

**

The city sirens broke
into my dreams, and I was suddenly wide awake. It was a little after midnight,
and Adam was sleeping peacefully. I slipped out of bed trying not to wake him, and
poured myself another glass of wine. I headed to the bathroom to draw a bubble
bath. The tension began to melt from my body as I slid down into the steamy
water and sipped the wine. Six short days. It was all a blur. I heard Adam
stirring in the other room.

He came into the bathroom
holding a glass of wine. “May I join you?”

“Please!”

I started to move
forward to let him sit behind me, but he gently leaned me back to my end of the
tub and got in facing me. “I want to see your beautiful face.”

We talked for a long
while about all the things that mattered to us. We talked about childhood
aspirations and what we felt we had accomplished so far in our lives. It felt very
intimate, very revealing.

It was the middle of
the night, and there were only a few short hours before Joe would be back to
take me somewhere to start my life over. Fear and sadness churned inside me
again. I tried desperately not to cry, but the tears came anyway. We climbed
back in bed, spooned, and he held me close, one hand caressing my breast. “I
feel your heartbeat,” he whispered. “You feel so good.”

I wanted to turn and
face him, but I knew if I did, the tears would come harder. I squeezed his arms
and sobbed. He held me until I fell asleep.

Chapter 1

The alarm went off at
7:30 a.m., which seemed like only a minute after we had fallen asleep. We
rolled over to face each other and shared long wet kisses. I felt so close to
him, so much love. He put his hand on my ass and gently pulled me in against
his hardness. His other hand stroked up my thigh and through my silky folds,
sending a shiver to my core. My body was responding quickly to his magical
touch. He rolled me on my back and took a taut nipple in his teeth while his
fingers continued their dance through my wetness. My breath hitched as a tinge
of pain shot through me when he tugged at my nipple with his teeth.

“I’m sorry. Am I
hurting you?” he asked quietly.

“No, not really. My
nipples are just so sensitive to your touch…and your bite,” I laughed.

“I know I got a little
carried away. I just can’t resist you,” he said, leaning down to nibble at my
neck.

It tickled, and I
giggled. “Please don’t try….” I ran my fingers through his thick hair and turned
his face to meet mine. Our eyes locked, his riveting gaze reaching for my soul.
Every inch of me ached, my heart, my soul, my stomach…I couldn’t believe that
this life was about to end. My eyes clouded with tears again. Adam reached up
and brushed away the first tear as it rolled down the side of my face.

“It’s okay, let it
out,” he murmured. He pulled me into a tight embrace and gently kissed my
shoulder. I was sobbing so hard I was shaking. “You’re a beautiful and smart
woman, Emily Ryan. I know you’re going to rock your new world,” he said, trying
to muster a smile as he pulled away from me so he could look into my eyes. “I
will always love you. Don’t forget that.”

“Oh, Adam. I love you
too. My heart aches just thinking about not being with you.”

He held my cheeks in
his enormous hands. “Promise me you will move on with your life. You’re a
passionate woman and you deserve love in your life.” Our lips met in a gentle
kiss.

“I’m really never going
to see you again, am I?” I asked, not really wanting or needing the answer.

“Let’s not think about
that. Let’s enjoy each other with the time we have,” he said, embracing me
again. His hand roamed up my side and caressed my breast, gently this time. He
slid down and took my nipple into his mouth and taunted me with is tongue. His
nimble fingers had found their way back into my slick folds and were working
their magic, taking my mind away from the madness. All my attention was focused
on him, and this intimacy we shared. My body was giving in to him quickly; the
sensations from every touch were amplified as the seconds ticked by, and time
was running out.

Adam sheathed himself
and rolled on top of me, parting my legs with his. He entered me slowly as his
breathing quickened. “Oh, Emily. You feel so good….” His eyes closed and desire
began to drive the dance. I wrapped my legs around his waist, and my arms
around his neck, and I didn’t want to let go. He pushed deep inside me over and
over, reaching the core of my being. Our climax was explosive with both ecstasy
and emotion.

“Ahhh!” I cried out as
the orgasm shattered through me, and Adam let out a low, guttural moan. His
body was stiff and writing against me. A moment later, he began to relax, and
leaned down to kiss me.

He slid down beside me
and pulled me close so my head was resting on his chest. His heartbeat pounded
against my ear. It was a peculiarly comforting sound. “You’re a bright light in
my life, Emily,” he said softly, and kissed the top of my head. “I love you.”

I pulled myself up so
we were eye to eye, lips to lips. “I love you, too, Adam. You’ve touched my
life in so many ways.” We kissed, tender loving kisses. I didn’t want this
moment to end; I knew it would never happen again. After a few minutes, he said
softly, “We’d better get a shower going.” I knew he was right.

After we’d showered and
dressed, he ordered breakfast - bacon and coffee…and a bread basket just to
keep things slightly balanced. We ate in silence, only the soft music from
Adam’s iPad breaking through the calamity of street noises. I honestly didn’t
know what to say anymore. I was still in shock and trying to process the fact
that I was only going to be Emily Ryan for a few more hours. Who was I going to
be? Where was I going? In an abundance of caution, they wouldn’t tell me
anything in advance.

I stared at him, trying
to etch his features into my mind. This was the last opportunity for me to form
a mental picture of him, and I wanted to memorize every detail, every dimple,
and every freckle, to remember him always. Adam’s phone rang. It was Joe. He
was downstairs waiting for me. My eyes filled with tears again. I squeezed them
shut and shook my head. “This isn’t happening!”

Adam wrapped his arms
around me. “Shhh. It’s going to be okay,” he said quietly. “I love you, Emily
Ryan…or whoever you are.” He smiled and held back tears. He kissed me with a
warm wet kiss. “It’s time to go.” He rolled my suitcase with one hand and held
my hand, fingers laced with the other. We rode the elevator down in silence.

Joe was outside with
the black sedan running at the curb. When he saw us coming, he popped the trunk
and stowed my suitcase. He quickly opened the back door for me to get in, but
realized I needed one more moment to say goodbye to Adam.

“When you’re ready, Ms.
Ryan,” Joe said, then walked around to the driver’s side and got in.

Adam brushed the hair
away from my face and kissed me on the cheek. “Be safe, Emily. I will always
love you.” I couldn’t speak. I tried. I opened my mouth, and nothing came out. Adam
put his forefinger to my lips, telling me not to try to speak. “I know,” was
all he said.

He helped me into the
back seat of the car, leaned in, and said, “Drive carefully, Joe.”

Joe held his arm up out
the window and called back, “Will do,” then drove away. I couldn’t look back. I
knew Adam was watching us fade into the traffic.

I sobbed silently in
the back seat. Joe handed me a box of Kleenex from the front. I took it and
said, “Thanks.”

Next, he handed me an
envelope. “Here are your papers. Don’t open this envelope until you’re on the
plane. It has information on your new identity and where you’ll be living.” My
head was spinning again. This was a dream. It had to be a dream. It was a
nightmare, really. It was really happening. I stared at the envelope for a moment
then tucked it in my purse. We rode in silence.

About forty-five
minutes later we arrived at Teterboro Airport. A private jet was idling just
outside of a hangar. Joe parked fairly close to it. He came around and opened
my door.

“Your captain is Brian.
He has his orders, so you can just climb aboard and get comfortable.”

“Thank you, Joe. Thank
you for everything.”

“You are most welcome,
Ms. Ryan. Have a good flight, and be safe.”

I walked toward the
stairs of the plane. Joe pulled my suitcase out of the trunk and handed it to
one of the flight assistants on the ground, who stowed it in an outer
compartment of the plane.

I climbed up and nodded
to Brian.

“Hello, Ms. Ryan.
Welcome aboard. Please make yourself comfortable anywhere back there.”

“Thank you.” I grabbed
a seat and let out a deep breath. It was a struggle to keep my composure.

The co-pilot came
aboard and shut the door behind him. He came over and shook my hand. “I’m
Steve. Just relax, and we’ll be on our way in a few minutes. There are refreshments
in the back on the left, and the restroom is in the back on the right. Please
let us know if we can do anything to make you more comfortable.”

“Thank you, Steve.” I
turned around to orient myself based on the information he had just given me. I’d
get something to drink when we were off the ground.

It was a cool, overcast
day. We took off as if we were as light as a feather. As we climbed, I looked
back at the city, knowing Adam was down there somewhere. I put my hand on the
window and said “Good bye, Adam Comstock.” Tears streamed down my cheeks. I
pulled a Kleenex out of my purse and blotted my face. As I did, I was reminded
of the envelope with my new identity. I slid it out and put it on my lap. I
wasn’t ready to open it just yet. We kept climbing and broke through the cloud
layer. The sky was a brilliant blue.
Like Adam’s eyes,
I thought. Ugh! My
heart ached.

When we leveled out, I
went into the back to get something to drink. I opened the small refrigerator
and pulled out a bottle of sparkling water. I noticed there was a small bottle
of cabernet in there, too. I looked at my watch.
11:22. Who cares?
I
pulled out the bottle of wine and grabbed two glasses, one for the wine and one
for the water. I went back to my seat and poured a glass of each. I took a sip
of the wine and remembered the first night Adam and I sat at TJ’s and drank
cabernet. He was so surprised that I liked red. I smiled to myself.

I stared at the
envelope. It was time to find out what was in my future. I slid the documents
out and began reading. My new name was Bridget Stone. I was now a resident of
Portland, Oregon. I continued reading about Bridget’s background. I almost felt
as if I was reading a book and the author was describing Bridget for the reader
to understand her character. It was an odd feeling when I came back to reality
and realized this was now me.

Bridget Stone. Not a bad
name. “Hi, I’m Bridget Stone,” I said out loud, practicing introducing myself.
“My name is Bridget. Bridget Stone here.” I was trying various deliveries to get
comfortable with the name.

Steve came out from the
front. “Is everything okay? I thought I heard you talking back here and wanted
to be sure you were all right.”

“I’m okay, thanks.” I
wasn’t sure whether he knew I was assuming a new identity when I walked off
this plane, so I didn’t elaborate any further.

“We’ll be landing in
Portland in about three hours, just before noon local time. Let me know if you
need anything.” He looked down at my drinks and said, “Looks like you’re in
pretty good shape,” and gave me a thumbs-up. I gave him a thumbs-up back and
nodded. Fatigue was setting in. I hadn’t slept much and every muscle in my body
ached, particularly my heart. I closed my eyes and fantasized about Adam as I drifted
off to sleep.

**

“Ms. Ryan?” Steve said,
touching my arm to wake me. “We are on our final approach into Portland. I need
you to fasten your seatbelt. May I take these drinks?” I took a sip of the
sparkling water and nodded. I looked out the window at what was about to be my new
home. I’d never been to Portland, so it would be an adventure to explore a new
city.

I looked through the
papers again. I remembered seeing a document that said I would have a federal marshal
as a confidant and facilitator to help me get oriented. Sally Creighton. She
would be my new best friend. We landed as smoothly as we had taken off, and
taxied to a hangar not unlike the one where Joe dropped me off. Steve climbed
out of the cockpit and let down the stairs. He held my hand as I stepped down, and
then went around to the compartment where my suitcase was stowed, and rolled it
over to me. He shook my hand. “Best of luck to you,” Steve said.

Brian was in the
doorway now, too. He waved. “Take care.”

“Thanks, gentlemen. A pleasure
flying with you.”

I turned toward the car
that was waiting as a woman got out and walked toward me. “Hi, Bridget, I’m
Sally Creighton. Welcome to Portland.”
