Acknowledgments
A huge thank you goes to Peter Riva, my fabulous agent, for suggesting I write about the Trail of Tears. It sort of stunned me when he proposed the idea. I wasn't sure I saw myself as he did, as an author for whom the subject would prove unusually fertile, but once I began learning about this shameful era of American history, I realized he had sent me off in a direction that would awaken my literary passions and reflect my deepest felt thematic concerns. His support of this novel from its inception to its completion has been stellar.
I must also, of course, thank my two editors: Peternelle van Arsdale, whose remarkable structural intelligence reformed aspects of the novel's vision, and Tina Pohlman, whose tenacious genius pulled material from me that I would never have mined on my own. Peternelle and Tina, you leave me breathless. I understand that such productive and intense partnerships between editors and authors today are rare. You make me feel blessed.
As for the production and promotion of this text, I must once again thank the usual suspects from Open Road Integrated Media for their expertise in shepherding my novel across all media. I am deeply indebted to the undeniable genius of Jane Friedman, the shining wisdom of Tina Pohlman, the knife-sharp shrewdness of Rachel Chou, the sundry and glittering talents of Nicole PassageÂ, Rachelle Mandik, Catherine Foulkrod, Andrea Worthington, MauÂricio DÃaz, Jesse Hayes, Amanda Shaffer, Joan Giurdanella, Nadea Mina, Laura De Silva, and my own Rachel Krupitsky. Thank you all. Your energy and commitment astound. Brava!
Lastly, with all my heart I thank my husband, Stephen K. Glickman, whose patience and industry are always invaluable. He has schlepped me to Cherokee, North Carolina, and Oklahoma City without complaint, listened to my ideas and discoveries with the most supportive excitement and enthusiasm, and untiringly lent his own brilliance to help shape my story.
