Alien Terrain (15 page)

Raj looked at her, amazed. “That’s right. It takes most
lovers years to understand that.” On the screen the collection of drawings
faded into the remaining postures. Raj smiled up at her. He trailed his hands
over her hips toward the soft skin of her belly and her breasts.

“Do you love me, Jane?”

“You can’t tell?” This fact seemed to discourage her. “All
of my life I’ve wished I was a loving person. I tried to love a lot of things
before you, but I always failed. Now it finally feels like love is everything
about me. I’m surprised it doesn’t show. ”

“This is my first experience with love.”

She smiled skeptically at that, like he might joke about
such things.

“I’ve been admired and appreciated.
Never
loved.

“I love you.” Solemnly, Jane nestled back against him.

“Don’t you want to know if I love you?” he asked.

She shook her head. “You killed eight people and then almost
slipped into a coma. Please don’t ever love me any more than that.”

Something on the screen distracted her. “Have you done
that?”

“All of it,” he said without bothering to look.

“Will you do it again?”

This time he glanced up at the modest orgy.
“If you like.”

“If
I
like?”

“Yes. It’s what you like now. Adventurous sex play or the two
of us in a dark room, it’s up to you.”

“Ah.” Jane crawled on top of him again, sitting with her
back turned to the screen.
“What if all I wanted was to see
you happy?”

Raj looked up at her lovely, loving face, haloed by the
images of time gone by. “Then rest, my love,” he said, drawing her closer.
“You’ve done it. Now you’re home.”
