A Fox's Love (American Kitsune Book 1) (30 page)

It was while Kevin was stretching out his hamstrings that another problem in the long series of problems that had happened this day occurred. The problem started when a string of mutterings broke out among the track members. Kevin ignored them at first, but he would only be able to keep to himself like that for so long.

Swift!”

Kevin sighed. “Eric. Still mad at me?”

You're damn right I'm still mad at you!” Eric looked livid as he stomped up to his friend. “Not only did you steal those busty bazungas from me, but now you're parading them around to everyone on our track team?”

Kevin gaped at the boy for several seconds as he tried to determine what his friend was talking about. He couldn't, so asked, “what are you talking about?”

I think he's talking about the girl with the really big boobs over there in the bleachers with the large sign that says 'Go Beloved!'” Kasey said, pointing over to the bleachers.

Kevin's eyes widened. Oh no. No, no, no! Please don't let her be here! He told her that he would meet up with her after he was done! Surely, she had done as he asked and was even now waiting for him at the school.

Craning his neck towards the bleachers, Kevin nearly broke down and cried. Just like Kasey said, Lilian was there, standing on the bleachers, holding the aforementioned sign above her head and she was waving it around with great enthusiasm.

Hey, Kev.” Justin came up to the group, now without his headphones in his ears and wearing his track uniform. “Who's the girl? Do you know her?”

You would know who she was if you didn't spend all lunch listening to music and ignoring everything around you.”

Justin had the decency to look sheepish.

"I take it you know her?” That was Kasey

Kevin sighed. "You could say that."

Could say that...” Eric grumbled hatefully. “You make it sound as if you hardly even know the girl.”

Eric received a glare from Kevin. “I do hardly even know her. We just met last week!”

Don't believe you,” Eric growled. “I don't fucking believe you! Even now you're lying to me!” Then, inexplicably, he began crying. “What happened to best friends, huh!? HUH!?”

You know what,” Kevin's shook his head, “I give up. I'm done. Just... think whatever you want.”

Hehehehe... someone's angry. Are we going to see a fight between friends?”

Kevin pointed a finger at Justin. “Quiet, you.”

"You should probably deal with her before Coach Deretaine gets upset."

Kevin's shoulders slumped. He hated Chase for his words. He hated him even more for being right.

Quickly sprinting to the bleachers Kevin reached Lilian. The girl smiled at him, but he was doing anything but smiling.

"What are you doing here?" he asked before she could even open her mouth. "I thought I told you to wait for me at the school."

"But it's so boring at the school and I want to spend time with you," Lilian pouted cutely at him. The look just caused Kevin to rub his face tiredly. "I came to this school to be with you. There isn't much point in me going to school if I'm not spending my time with you, is there?"

"That doesn't mean you need to spend every waking second with me!" Kevin argued. There had to be something seriously wrong with this girl. There was no way a normal girl would be this needy. Was it some kind of Kitsune thing that he didn't know about?

"Did I do something wrong?" Lilian began sniffling. She looked like she might cry any second now.

"Look," Kevin sighed as his anger left him. He couldn't be mad at her for this. He couldn't even blame her. She had been home schooled and had never lived among humans before. She probably just didn't know how to act around them. "I just don't want you to get in trouble with my coach. He's kind of strict."

"So you don't mind me being here?" The look of unabashed hope on Lilian's face ensured that whatever small amount of resistance Kevin had built up (meaning none what so ever) was crushed. His shoulders slumped in defeat.

"No..." he sighed wearily. "I don't mind you being here."

"Don't worry," Lilian was suddenly all smiles now. It was almost as if the whole 'I'm so depressed, pity me' act was just that, an act. But there was no way she would do something like act sad to manipulate his emotions.

Right?

"I won't interrupt your training or anything."

Too late for that, Lilian.

"You won't even notice I'm here."

Also too late for that.

"Kind of hard not to notice you standing there with that big sign in your hands," Kevin pointed out dryly. He then adopted a confused expression. "And just where did you get that sign anyways?"

"I took it from my Extra Dimensional Storage Space."

Kevin blinked. Once. "Your what?"

"My Extra Dimensional Storage Space," Lilian repeated. Kevin scratched the side of his head in confusion.

"Is this, like, some kind of Kitsune power or something?"

"Of course not," she chided in a voice that asked “how come you don't already know this?” Kevin twitched. "All women have an Extra Dimensional Storage Space. It's all right here in this book." Lilian pulled out a large, red book titled “100 Rules and Laws of Anime” and began flipping pages.

Kevin watched the girl, gawking. At the same time, Lilian began muttering to herself as she perused the book in her hands.

"Let's see... Law of Inverse Lethal Magnitude... no... Law of Transient Romantic Unreliability, I think that one is talking about us! No, never mind, it's talking about that idiot Minmei. I just thought it was talking about us because it had romance in the title... now let's see... ah ha! Here we are! The Law of Extra Dimensional Capacitance!" Lilian coughed to clear her throat, then began reading out loud. "It says here that all anime females have an Extra Dimensional Storage Space of variable volume somewhere on their person from which they can instantly retrieve any object at a moment's notice." She then held the book out to Kevin so he could see what she had read. "See?"

"This isn't an anime!" Kevin shouted, smacking the book away from his face.

"I know that." She put the book away, which involved her shoving it back into her cleavage, something that Kevin noticed right away. "That's why I also have these."

Two more books randomly appeared in her hands. The one in her right hand was a book that looked like it had been taken straight out of an RPG, which was ironically titled Dungeon Master's Guide. The book in the left hand had an image of a demon statue with various mythological species underneath it called the Player's Handbook.

Kevin's right eye began twitching. It couldn't be good for him to gain a tick like that at such a young age.

"This isn't Dungeons and Dragons either!"

"I know that," Lilian pouted. "But they're still useful. I've been using the knowledge in these books for the past week and everything's turned out perfectly."

Kevin had to wonder what was wrong with this girl to think anything that had happened so far was perfect. And just what advice was in those books for her to follow anyway? Didn't they just explain rules and game play for D&D?

"Swift!"

"Oh crap!" Kevin turned around, his face ashen as Coach Deretaine stomped up the bleacher stairs to where he and Lilian were talking. This was
so
not good. He was really going to get it now. "Coach―"

"Don't you Coach me!" Coach Deretaine scowled. "What the hell are you doing talking to this girl? I thought I told you to get started on your stretches!" The track and field coach didn't give Kevin enough time to reply as he whirled on the red head. "And you! I don't know who you are, but I want you to stop distracting my runners and get off this field! You got me!?"

Kevin began sweating bullets as Coach Deretaine tore into them. He had never seen his coach this angry before. Annoyed, yes, but never angry. This was not good. Annoying Coach Deretaine often resulted in you running laps until you couldn't stand anymore. He didn't want to know what actually pissing his coach off would do.

Thankfully, he wouldn't be finding out today.

"I'm really sorry sir," Lilian said, her eyes going impossibly wide as she stared at Coach Deretaine. Said eyes began watering and her lower lip started to quiver. The watery eyes managed to block out the way they glowed. "I didn't mean to disrupt your practice. I just wanted to support my boyfriend while he trained."

Kevin's track and field coach reared back as if struck. "Ah... well..." the wiry man scratched his buzzed head awkwardly, an easily noticeable blush staining his cheeks. "I suppose that's okay. Just make sure you don't disrupt my student's training again."

Kevin gaped. He didn't know if he should be amazed, impressed, or displeased that Lilian's looks seemed to work on his coach just as easily as they did on him.

"Don't worry," Lilian smiled brightly. "I won't."

As Coach Deretaine walked back down the bleachers in something of a daze, Kevin turned to look at Lilian with a raised eyebrow. "That enchantment ability of yours is an awfully convenient power."

Lilian actually looked a tad smug as he said this. "I know."

"No. Seriously," Kevin insisted, "it's like a poorly disguised Plot Devise or a “get out of jail as many times as you want” card."

"And that," Lilian began succinctly, "is why the Laws of Anime, the Dungeon Master's Guide and the Player's Handbook are so useful."

Kevin didn't respond. Really, what could he say to dispute something like that? Nothing, so he didn't bother.

Scene Break.

Practice went by quickly after that small moment on the bleachers. Or relatively quickly. Lilian's presence still caused a few problems with some of the boys who couldn't seem to get over her beauty, but for the most part, practice went normally.

Of course, Eric was a bit of a problem. But Kevin had known he would be the moment Lilian had shown up, so it didn't bother him too much.

The twins were also a problem, but it was one for Coach Deretaine to deal with, not him. No way Kevin was getting in between one of their brawls.

"I guess we'll have to find out who's faster during our first track meet," Kevin frowned at his rival. Once again, the times they scored on the 100 meter and 200 meter dash averaged out to a near tie. Kevin had done better on the 200 meter, while Kasey had one-upped him on the 100 meter.

"I guess so," Kasey narrowed his eyes. If this were a cartoon or some kind of anime, this would be the moment where their rivalrous glare physically manifested itself in the form of sparks. This wasn't a cartoon or anime, however, so the sparks didn't happen. "You'd better bring your A-game next time, Swift, or I'm going to kick your ass."

You should worry more about yourself," Kevin shot back. "You might want to stay here and practice some more. It would be embarrassing if you lost to a rookie like me."

"Hmph!"

"Beloved!" The glaring match between the two came to an abrupt halt as Lilian walked up to Kevin and smiled. She was holding out a bottle of water, which Kevin knew she had not been carrying before. Was this more of that storage space stuff she had been talking about? "Here, this is for you, because you worked so hard."

"Uh..." Kevin's glare disappeared as he turned to look at Lilian. Kasey used this opportunity to walk away, though not before sending one last glare towards his rival. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Lilian smiled lovingly at him as he unscrewed the cap. Not wanting any of his peers (all of whom were glaring at him with DOOM in their eyes) to see the color change on his face, Kevin took a long drink of water, finishing it all in one go.

Wanting to get off the track field as quickly as possible, Kevin was about to head out with Lilian when a voice interrupted them.

"Oh, my beautiful and large breasted tit maiden," Eric had appeared before the two of them. He was holding Lilian's left hand in one of his while the other stroked her knuckles. Both of them had to wonder how he had gotten there so fast. They hadn't even seen him coming! "Will you grace me with your ginormous bazungas and walk with me to the locker room?"

"Ugh, no," Lilian wrinkled her nose as she jerked her hand out of his and quickly wrapped her arms around Kevin's right arm. The smaller of the two boys just sighed and rolled his eyes as his best friend slumped to his knees in defeat. "I'm going to walk with my Beloved, not you."

"Damn you, Kevin!"

And so, Kevin walked with Lilian on his arm, Eric trailing behind them as he glared at Kevin's back. The young man had to admit he was not too fond of being glared at. It had been growing more and more frequent as the day went by, and seeing his friend giving him the same glare as everyone else really bothered him.

They reached the locker room with minimal fuss. Other than the glaring.

"I'll wait for you here," Lilian smiled, then wrinkled her nose a bit. "You need to take a shower."

"Yeah, well, I did just do a lot of running," Kevin reminded her. "I'm pretty sweaty.”
