A Delicious Deception (23 page)

If she could have described the effect those words had on his face then she would have said it was like coming out into brilliant sunshine after being in a long, dark tunnel. But then she still couldn’t quite believe herself that they had both been handed back such a beautiful miracle. ‘They said it
could
have been a threatened miscarriage but, if it wasn’t, then what happened isn’t entirely uncommon. It could have been caused by possible hormone fluctuation, which is why I stopped feeling pregnant. And they said that that’s not uncommon either, particularly at this stage of our pregnancy.’

King could scarcely believe what she was saying. He was
still going to be a father! He felt like jumping up with a terrific
Whoop!
and reaching for the sky.

It also touched him immensely how she had said ‘our’ pregnancy. It meant that she was going to share every part and every minute of his child’s development with him over the coming months. Meant that this wonderful woman, who had started out as just a flitting figure he wanted to deny being attracted to, was having his baby, and was never going to shut him out of her life—or be separated from him—again. Meant that whatever problems lay ahead, they could deal with them. Together. Her mother’s health. Mitch. And any other trials and tribulations that came their way.

‘I love you,’ he told her, placing a hand on the yet gentle swell of her middle. ‘Both of you,’ he murmured, and the depth of his unmistakable love produced an answering emotion in Rayne.

When she responded, standing on tiptoe to kiss him, her face was glowing, King noticed, her eyes moist and sparkling, but sparkling now, he acknowledged, with tears of joy.

‘Do you realise the papers are going to have a field day when they realise that, not only are we married, but that we’ve already started a family?’ she breathed, slightly in awe of all the attention that the news would attract initially.

‘Let them!’ King invited, smiling broadly, locking her to his side as they moved leisurely back to the car, and from the pride and happiness she could see and feel emanating from him at the prospect of being a husband and father, Rayne knew that he was going to enjoy shouting it out to the world.
