A Christmas Date (5 page)

She brewed a fresh pot
of coffee as she worked, but her stomach rebelled at the thought of food. A
dozen orders kept her very busy, some tall orders too. Who on earth wanted
three dozen roses fashioned into a giant bouquet banner to be delivered first
thing the next morning? There was hardly enough time to put them together, it
was a good job she’d come in so early. The door chimes clanged as someone
walked in, looking at the clock, she realized it was barely seven a.m. She
ought to have locked the door while she was here alone. Very foolish of her.
Hurrying out to the front of the store she paused at the sight of the tall dark
figure standing silhouetted in the doorway. “Lucas!” she exclaimed.

“So, I’m back to being
Lucas again? I guess I probably deserve that,” he said sheepishly. “I came to
pick up a special order.”

“Oh?”

“I requested several
dozen red roses fashioned into a special banner.”

Angie
went into the back and brought out the newly finished beautiful creation.
“Would you like a card to write a message?” she asked, biting back tears.

“No,
thanks, I think I’ll just deliver this message in person,” he said, taking the
roses, he handed them back to her.

“But…?”

The lush red roses were
their own message, fashioned into two very special words. Marry me.

Lucas grinned as he
watched realization dawn on Angie’s sweet and loving features, but wasn’t prepared
for the cascade of tears that coursed down her cheeks.

“I did say three nights
and you have to marry me…” he reminded her, drawing her into his embrace.

She slipped her arms
around him, holding him close as she nestled her cheek softly against his
chest.

He stroked her hair. “I
love you Angie.”

“I thought…”

“I know, I’m so sorry!
Other than in business, I’m just hopeless with words. I didn’t know what to
say, how to handle things…and you are my first…”

Her eyebrows went up.
He grinned wryly.

“First
real love. I’ve never wanted to get involved before. I can’t imagine being
without you now. You are everything I could ever want in my life. So what’s it
to be, before I keel over with suspense here?” he asked, trying to appear calm,
but her heart jumped when she realized that he truly was nervous, and he was
watching her with so much love and hope in his eyes. He wasn’t cold or arrogant
at all. Just afraid.

“I
love you too, and yes I will marry you, Luke,” she said softly, “Happy New
Year.”

“Yeah,” Luke said,
gently kissing her beautiful lips. “It will be.”
