Overnight Cinderella (13 page)

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Without you I'm going to keep roaming the earth never finding the castle where I can rest. I'll keep fighting battles until I'm no longer quick enough to win. I need you, Cami. I need you to be my shelter—my safe haven.”

“I will,” she said.

He bent to kiss her and Cami felt as if she'd found the home she'd been longing to create forever. She felt like the sun blazing gloriously down on a summer's day. She felt like the woman she'd always longed to be.

“I've missed you,” she said, and started forward
only to trip and fall against him. Duke pulled her closer, laughing.

A full-bodied expression of joy that went way beyond mirth at her clumsiness. It was the expression of a life fully realized and the happiness yet to come. It was the laugh of a man in love and capable of loving, and Cami knew it in her heart.

Epilogue

D
uke had spent three months in Canada while Cami planned their wedding. His return to Atlanta was everything he'd hoped it would be, except for having to sleep by himself last night. He smiled to himself as he straightened his bow tie. That would be the last night he spent alone.

Today he was marrying the sexy little tornado that had shaken his world and rearranged it. The church was decked out in bright colors. His mother and stepfather sat in the front pew. His half sisters and their families lined the rows behind his mom. It still felt weird to have a family after all this time. And he knew deep in his heart that if it wasn't for Cami he wouldn't have a family today.

What had he done to deserve her?

“Are you ready to sign away your freedom?” Max asked under his breath as they stood at the front of the church.

Way past ready, he thought. “Yes.”

“I've never seen a man so eager to give it up.”

“Being single is nothing compare to Cami.”

Max gave his shoulder a companionable squeeze. It felt good to have his friend by his side, Duke realized.

“Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.”

The “Wedding March” began and as he looked down the aisle he caught a glimpse of his bride and his heartbeat doubled. Her sister preceded her down the aisle. And though Cami had raved about her beauty, Gabriella paled next to Duke's bride. Cami shone with an inner grace that made other women fade into the background.

The white frothy dress and veil were her fantasy, he knew from the long telephone conversations they'd had every night he'd been away. But underneath he knew she was fulfilling his fantasy.

He looked forward to a lifetime of fantasies. The secret ones that he didn't have to pretend not to want. The ones of family and friendship and happily-ever-after.

Cami finally reached him and tripped over the hem of her dress right into his arms.

“Still a bit of a klutz,” he said.

“You wouldn't have me any other way,” she said with a grin.

He smiled at her, something he found easier and easier to do all the time. “I'll have you any way I can get you.”
