Megan Button and the Brim-Tree (6 page)

The cloud then descended gently like a helicopter on to the mossy ground and as Megan climbed down, to her eternal merriment, it began to swirl and glimmer revealing every cranny of the
clearing.

The cloud began to spin faster and faster and rainbow lightning
whizzed
through the air, then all of a sudden, with a resounding
BANG
, the cloud and The Brim-Tree became one!

Instead of the old Brim-Tree, a knotty gnarled, knobbily tree-trunk stood soaring nobly over the clearing. Shafts of light came down from glistening rainbow leaves and across the flourishing
grass, stretched crookedly chunky dark roots, which burrowed deep into the ground.

Megan inhaled hugely.

The Brim-Tree was the
most
amazing thing she had ever seen.

Its beauty held her spellbound, and she could feel the Magic that The Brim-Tree was emitting into The Enchanted Kingdom, for it made her feel warm and fuzzy.

About to ask if Lucy felt this too, she was momentarily thrown, as to her surprise, Prince Tumble stood flanked by his two guards in the shadow of the gargantuan tree, pawing at the loose
soil.

In all the excitement Megan also hadn’t noticed that beside Prince Tumble was another Elf!

He had a humorous face and wore light green trousers, matched with a royal blue, long-sleeved tunic, and was the same size as Princess Blossom, with a golden and white light emanating from him
that flinted off his boot buckles.

Suddenly, Blossom fluttered ahead, and she and the Elf hugged one another. Turning to the sisters, she introduced, ‘Megan and Lucy, this is my beloved Prince Elfin.’

Prince Elfin bowed, brushed back some of the tufty chestnut hair that swathed his shoulders, and with his pale blue eyes set, said in a regal voice, ‘Megan and Lucy, it is good to meet you
at long last. I journeyed here as soon as the Unicorn that Prince Tumble dispatched reached me. If it were not for your help, I would not have my Princess, or her brother back. Thank
you.’

Megan looked at Lucy, who rolled her eyes, and with her cheeks turning a slight shade of scarlet, she was decidedly happy that Princess Blossom was now reunited with her Prince.

Chapter Twelve
The Unlocking Of A Keeper

Bourne on the air came the very same voice from the cavern. ‘Hello, children, I am the voice of The Brim-Tree. Without your help, peace and harmony would not have been
restored to The Kingdom and I would still be trapped within the evil power of Abraxus. I was unsure if the power in the one remaining leaf would be enough for your Magic to tap into, but you have
proved that you truly do believe in us and I am pleased to see that no harm befell any of you,’ he then congratulated. ‘Megan, you
are
The Fairy Key, because you trusted in the
Magic within you. If it were not for your belief The Enchanted Kingdom would not have been saved. And Lucy, for the valiant gallantry you have shown by joining forces with your sister you will now
be known as The Dragon Keeper.’

The Brim-Tree went on to explain. ‘Lucy, the figure that you are holding, will look like any other Dragon figure, but with your protection Abraxus will remain like this for always. By
coming to The Kingdom, you both have chosen your destinies. One day you will understand this. Now hold out your hands.’

Two leaves floated down through the air, and then lay in their palms: in Megan’s was a candyfloss pink, while in Lucy’s was a rich deep purple one - which were their favourite
colours, and as the peaceful voice continued, it sounded almost alike to that of their grandfather’s, ‘If you do ever want to see us again, all you have to do is call on the Magic
inside you, and using the leaves you will be able to join us. Do not forget, that not a second will pass from the moment when you come to The Kingdom, to returning to your world. It is now time for
you both to go. Bid goodbye to your friends and do not be sad, for I should think you will see them again,’ hinted the tree most mysteriously.

Everyone milled around The Fairy Key and The Dragon Keeper to express their fond farewells.

A few minutes later, The Brim-Tree told them to hold the leaves tightly in their balled hands and too think of their Mum and Dad. A shimmering cloud of gold Fairy dust appeared, and the voice
counselled them to step forward into it.

As they were about too, Megan and Lucy heard a rumbling
ROAR
.

From the shadow, they each glanced up and saw Bront looking down at them whilst circling majestically far above The Brim-Tree. Before going into the glittery curtain, Megan darted a glimpse over
her shoulder for one final look at her new friends, raised a cheery arm, then as she tore her eyes away, she stepped into the Fairy dust, and to her astonishment, in front of her and Lucy, was the
familiar hallway with cream carpets on the floor and coffee-coloured walls.

The last encrusted sparkles of dust disappeared and slouching into her room, Megan kicked her slippers off. ‘Aren’t you going to your bedroom?’

Lucy loafed behind her. ‘I’ll stay in yours for a while,’ she ruled instead.

‘O-oh OK, but we must be quiet,’ Megan heeded, and got a faint whiff of vanilla from her spotless pink pyjamas. ‘We don’t want to be caught.’

Putting the leaves down, they changed to a muddy dark brown, and felt crisply brittle. Intrigued, they scooped them up, and again, fizzy flecks tickled their fingers.

An utterly befuddled-looking Megan said speculatively. ‘This must happen too protect itself from non-believers. We’ll have to find a hidey-hole for them, as Mum or Dad might think
they’re old leaves from the back garden and throw them away,’ she then carefully replaced the leaves back on to the cluttered shelf of the bookcase.

While Lucy toyed with Abraxus on the bed, Megan wandered over and looked at her set of Fairy figurines and other creatures that she loved so much, and thought privately about Princess
Blossom.

Although there were other children who believed in Magic, the Princess had known instantly, just how much she truly believed in them all and would be the child to rescue her.

She felt her heart lift and her eyes twinkled: she knew that it would no longer matter if anyone at school called her nasty names; she had magical friends and those malicious children who
taunted her would never know.

Dear old Megan secretly smiled to herself: she realised whilst she
was
The Fairy Key, she knew that even if she weren’t, and even though she was sometimes lonely, she
would,
as she always had been, still be special.

Lucy then joined her, to talk about the battle with Abraxus, the super adventure they had had within The Enchanted Kingdom, and what frolicking fun they would have when they returned.
