I didn’t get a chance to retaliate. Shane swung open the front door, planted his hands under my oxters and launched me outside into the fresh, cold air. “Button your impudent lip, boy, and get in the car. Go on, or we’ll never get home.”

I did as bidden, climbing into the back of his car. Goodbyes were concluded and a few minutes later we were off, sweeping down the long drive. Homeward bound.
