Justin had tried to convince her not to come but she wouldn't hear of it. She wanted to be part of the team by doing something instead of just standing around the warehouse hoping they would find her boyfriend.

“Sarah Langston?” she heard a voice say her name.

“Yeah?” She turned to see a man standing beside her. He was an older man wearing a trench coat and carrying an umbrella.

“I'm Colonel Caldwell.”

“Did you find Jonathan?”

“Let's take a walk. It might not be safe for us to stand around,” he said as she followed her down the steps and along a walkway in the park.

“Jonathan told me he spoke to you when he first came to this planet three years ago.”

“He approached me and asked me for my help.”

“And did you?”

“I got him in touch with Justin Gait and provided him with a means of living here with a genuine form of identification.”

“Tell me what you know.”

“What I'm about to tell you is classified above top secret. Like most Americans you're probably not aware of this but our government has become very secretive and compartmentalized. There are many different groups within the government working on highly classified projects where one group doesn't know what the other is doing most of the time. I had to pull a few strings to find out what happened to Jonathan.”

“I'm listening.”

“My sources believe that Jonathan is being held captive at the Cheyenne Mountain complex in Colorado. Of course I can't be certain of this because I don't have the proper security clearance to get into the facility.”

“But this is what your sources have determined?”

“Most likely.”
“My friend mentioned something about the Shadowgate Society. Are you familiar with that name?”

“In 1947 an alien spacecraft crash landed in Roswell New Mexico. When the government found out about this they formed a secret organization called Majestic Twelve. The name has changed over the years from the Illuminati to what is now the Shadowgate Society supposedly.”

“So they are real?”

“I'm afraid so.”

“What do they plan to do with Jonathan?”

“I ran across this piece of information by accident during my search and found out that this group has plans to create an army of advanced super soldiers to combat tomorrow's wars. Now that technology has caught up with them they might be trying to use the nanites from Jonathan’s suit to put the super soldier project into full swing.”

“Oh, no. What do you think they will do to Jonathan?”

“Who knows but these people don't play by the rules. You're very brave coming here to see me.”

“I'm a military brat Colonel. I've learned how to be brave.”

“I know. You're father has been in the military for a long time.”

“However we don't speak much to each other anymore. Whenever I try to call him I'm told he's busy and sometimes I can't even be told where he is.”

“That's not surprising considering what your father does.”

“What does he do?”

“I know he works on highly classified projects for the military but I can't say which ones. That information is restricted.”

“I was hoping either you or my father could somehow help me try and get my boyfriend back,” she said as they came to a stop next to an intersection.

“And how am I supposed to do that? You have no idea what these people are capable of and what lengths they will go to keep non essential personnel out of these secret facilities.”

“Maybe I should turn myself in and beg for his release.”

“You'll be wasting your time I'm afraid.”

“If that's the case then I think I have another way of rescuing him. Colonel, thank you for your time today. I appreciate you telling me all of this.”

“Of course. Be careful. This isn't a game they're playing,” he said and they began to walk their separate ways.

Then out of the corner of Sarah’s eye she saw two black SUV's approach her. When they briefly stopped next to her the back seat door opened and a man wearing sunglasses and a dark trench coat got out and grabbed her as she tried to run. She attempted to get free of his grasp but it was no use. The man soon put a cloth around her mouth that caused her to loose consciousness. It was the last thing she remembered before everything went dark.

Hidden in plain sight, the mysterious complex built underneath Cheyenne Mountain was a mystery to the outside world. Using black budget funds, only those who worked there knew the real work that was being conducted behind the scenes.

Three levels below the surface of the complex, in a small room with no windows, Sarah was sitting in a chair with her wrists handcuffed behind her back. The handcuffs were also chained to the floor.

The air in the room was stale and the only source of light was coming from the light fixture over her head. Her hair was messy and damp from sweating. In front of her, in the corner, was a large metal door with a tiny window near the top.

Her mind continued to focus on Jonathan as she sat there; his smile, his good looks, his charm. It was the only thing that kept her relatively calm. Then the door to the room opened and a man she recognized walked in.

It was her father.

He was wearing his military uniform like usual. He seemed to lack a substantive personality for the most part. He was escorted by another low ranking soldier who walked in behind him.

“I can't believe this. Do you know what protocols I've had to break just to find you?” her father asked looking at her. “My informants tell me that you spoke to Colonel Caldwell in Washington D.C. I had no choice but to arrest you.”

“I'm sorry,” was all she could say to please him.

“What did he tell you?” he asked.

Sarah could tell he was starting to get aggravated but revealing the truth to him would most likely have severe consequences. So she decided to lie for the time being.

“I refuse to say anything,” she answered.

“I need to know,” he asked.

“Too damn bad because I won't tell you!” she argued.

“Do you know what sacrifices I've had to make with my superiors to keep you from being monitored around the clock while you were with your boyfriend?” he pointed out to her.

“You've been monitoring me!?”

He turned to the guard and said, “I'd like some time alone with my daughter. Leave us.”

At first the guard didn't move. He was trained to keep a watchful eye on people like Sarah but her father would have none of it.

“That’s an order, soldier!” he ordered.

The soldier finally left the room and went outside to stand guard at the door.

“I know you hate me for what I've done and the decisions I've made,” he told her quietly. “But I'm no longer the one running things around here. I still give orders to some but take them from others as well.”

“What happened to you, dad? You're a solider. You once told me you took an oath to defend the laws of the constitution. And now you're kidnapping your own daughter and her boyfriend no doubt,” she scolded him under her breath.

“You have no idea who I have to deal with just so I can keep the both of us safe,” he said.

“What about mom? Because of your selfish ego and reckless thinking, she's dead!” she shot back.

“Don't you dare drag her into this! I loved your mother and I still love you because you're my daughter.”

“I hope so, father,” she said.

“Listen to me carefully. They want to know what Caldwell told you. We tracked your movements using the GPS signal on your cell phone. Unfortunately, because he is a military officer we couldn’t arrest him. We had to let him go.”

“I told you, I'm not telling you anything. Now where is Jonathan?”

“He's a national security threat,” he said.

“It figures.”

The General sighed. Sarah

Sarah could tell he was starting to loose his patience with her when the door to the room opened and the guard stepped in saying, “Sorry, General. You're needed down the hall.”

“Very well,” he complied.

Her father left the room leaving Sarah all alone with a soldier he didn't fully trust.

Chapter 23

The first thing Jonathan noticed after he regained consciousness was that he could hear voices nearby. He couldn't open his eyes to see who the voices belonged to or where he was. He felt weak and groggy. He couldn't move any part of his body as he appeared to be lying on his back on something hard.

The only thing he could do was just continue to listen to what was being said so he could a sense of where he was.

“Any change in his condition doctor?” He heard a familiar voice ask. It sounded like General Langston.

Sarah’s father?

“No, sir. We gave him a really strong sedative that is still being pumped into his blood stream. He hasn't moved a muscle,” a male doctor answered.

“Good. What about the gloves?”

“We've tested them on several different people but they didn't form the suit like we were hoping.”

“Have you been able to examine them?”

“Yes sir. They appear to be made out of microscopic machines called nanites.”

“Nanotechnology?”

“That is correct sir.”

“Can you extract some of the nanites from the gloves?”

“We've already done so and put a sample in this syringe for you to take to Groom Lake.”

“Thank you Doctor. Will you be able to duplicate the suit using the nanites you extracted?”

“I'm not sure yet. This kind of technology is so advanced I can't guarantee anything.”

“Just do your best, doctor. I'll meet you at Groom Lake as soon as you're done here. Please inform Colonel Dickens that I'm heading over there with my daughter.”

“Yes sir.”

A few minutes later Jonathan heard what sounded like an alarm going off, followed by what sounded like bodies dropping to the floor. Then he felt someone pull a needle out of his arm. Slowly, he started to open his eyes.

“Jonathan, are you alright?” he head a familiar voice ask.

Jonathan looked up to see Justin standing over him. He was wearing a leather jacket with flames on it.

“Justin? Nice outfit,” He noticed, sounding groggy.

“Thanks. We need to get you out of here,” Justin said as he lifted Jonathan up to where he was in a sitting position on a metal table in a room with medical equipment and a fancy x-ray machine.

“Where am I?”

“Cheyenne Mountain Complex.”

“My gloves.”

“I'll get them. Can you walk?” Justin asked him.

“I... don't think so,” he said. Then Justin lifted his friends arm around his own neck as Jonathan stepped down off the table.

“I've taken out everyone I've seen so far in the base.”

“Sarah... We have to save... Sarah.”

“Where is she?”

“Left with.... her father. Groom Lake.”

“This is Seal Team Six on approach to the facility. We are ready to lock down and secure the base. Over,” a voice said coming from a radio that was sitting on the desk in a corner of the room.

“We're going to have to find another way out. Wait here a minute,” Justin said putting me down. Jonathan could feel the heat from Justin’s body as he ran out of the room, leaving me all alone. A few seconds later he returned and said, “I saw Sarah and her father. They just entered the elevator and are heading down to the bottom level of this complex. I couldn’t catch them in time. Is your strength returning?”

“I think so. Whatever they injected me with really did a number on me,” Jonathan said.

“Then put your suit on so Peter can help operate it,” Justin suggested as he helped put the gloves on Jonathan.

Almost immediately the nanites formed the suit around his body once again.

“Jonathan?” Jonathan heard Peter say through the suit.

“Good to hear your voice again, Peter,” said Jonathan.

“Are you okay?”

“I will be. Help me walk until my strength fully returns.”

“Let's move,” Justin said as he peered out of room. “We'll head to the elevator which is just down the hall and to the right.”

With the help of Peter remotely controlling his suit, they made their way down the hall before making a right turn until they came to the elevator. Justin pushed the button that pointed down which would take them to the lower levels.

“Do you know which level they stopped on?” Jonathan asked.

“The very bottom,” he answered.

They waited a few minutes for the doors to open. When they finally did the two men rushed inside and Justin pushed the button marked “B” which was located at the very bottom. Jonathan felt the elevator begin to move.

“We also need to catch up to General Langston,” Jonathan said.
