Stop texting my girl.*

Who’s this?

*Jessop. I work with her at the library. She’s not interested anymore. *

There wasn’t a message after that, and when I saw the texts hours later, I knew without a doubt that Payton gave up. I put my hand in front of my mouth and could feel the bile rising.

I had to get home.

Now.

Chapter One

* How about a mulligan…*

Keri

I
stood there, looking at the charred wood, and the sad looking debris where the once-loved treehouse used to stand. I put my hand up to my mouth and cried, wishing I knew how to fix what I upended in the first place. Payton, my best friend, my everything.

Looking at the ruins made me realize what I’d lost, and I cried even harder. He burned down my favorite place in the entire world. I hurt him badly.

I thought about the past six months with tears in my eyes. Everything that had happened was a big mistake, and it felt like a hole had formed in my chest. I couldn’t imagine how Payton was feeling, how he had to have felt to have done this.
