Stay here.” It was Connor who spoke, his voice clear and light. At his side, the Queen smiled and inclined her head. “You have done our people a great service. You would be welcome to live among us, if you wished, or to travel our land.” I waited for Miriel’s polite demurral, but saw her looking about herself, at the glimpses of rolling hills and clear blue sky, and saw that she, too, had realized that we had no home, no place to call our own.
She looked over at
me, a question in her eyes, and I caught my breath. In all my days spent waiting, and grieving, I had not been able to touch the memories of Temar. But now the breath of the wind, the green of the land, seemed an invitation. It was a last gift.

, he had asked me, and I thought now that he had meant for me to find a haven here. I swallowed, and nodded to Miriel.
“
We would like that,” she answered softly, for both of us and for the first time in days, I saw her smile, the color coming back to her face, her eyes bright. She reached out for my hand, and our fingers twined together.
“Yes,” I agreed.
