Road to Glory (26 page)

“Here now!” The manager of the hotel came running toward her. “Glory Beebe, is that you?”

“Hello, Mr. Black. Yes, it’s me. Travis!” she screamed again. “What are you up to?”

“Has this man done something to you? You’re causing quite a disturbance.”

“Yes.” She nodded. “He’s done quite a lot to me. He’s…” Her eyes widened as the door of the last room on the upper floor opened. Travis stepped out, wearing just his jeans, toweling his hair.

“Glory?” His hands drew to a stop.

“Travis Hargrove, you come down here this second,” she ordered. “We have to talk.”

He dropped the towel around his shoulders and held onto the rail. “Why?”

“Because,” she shouted back.

“Because why, Glory Beebe?” he demanded.

She looked around at all the people.

“Tell him, honey,” a woman in the crowd called out.

“Because, doggone it, I love you and I’m not going to let you go without a fight.”

“What about the ranch?” Travis asked.

Glory shook her head. “The ranch is a place, just a place, Travis. Without you there, it’s nothing. I need you. I’ll go with you on the rodeo circuit. I’ll follow you anywhere as long as you don’t go without me.”

The night air filled with silence. Her nerves strained. Had she made some miscalculation?

Then, slowly, Travis walked toward the wrought iron steps. “I turned him down, Glory.”

“What?” she gasped, taking a step in his direction.

“I turned Parker down. I won’t be going on the rodeo circuit,” he explained as his steps brought him closer to the pavement.

“Why? Your dream was to ride bulls.”

“It’s no dream without you, Glory. I got the highest score ever, this afternoon. But those eight seconds don’t mean anything compared to seeing you here and doing this.” With those words, he took her into his arms and kissed her.

It began with one person, then spread across the entire motel complex. People clapped and shouted. Along the road in front of the parking lot, horns honked madly, everyone cheering them on. When their kiss broke, Travis let go and bent down on one knee.

“I love you, Glory Beebe. I was a fool not to tell you sooner. I want your dream to become my dream. I want to stay here in Palmer. I want to grow old with you. Raise hundreds of bulls, and watch the sunset outside your back door. I love you, Glory. Will you marry me?”

Her eyes brimmed with tears. “Yes, Travis Hargrove, yes.”

The applause broke out again, but Travis didn’t mind. These were the best eight seconds he’d ever spent. All his life he’d searched for the road to glory, only to find it right here, in his future wife’s arms, and that’s just where he planned to stay.
