Porpoiseful Intent

Sean Morita and Emery Nadel are enjoying settling in together as mates, but there is deadly trouble brewing on the horizon as plans for the Samhain superpod get underway. Sean’s parents have no idea that Emery and his family are dolphin shifters, and everyone wants to keep it that way.

But what do you get when you mix a hurricane, a houseful of dolphin shifters, a pair of oblivious human parents, a vengeful ex-lover, and an alligator shifter with a warped sense of humor?

Chapter One

Between working and getting his brains boinked out by his new mate, Sean Morita was too busy to notice when, just off the west coast of Africa, a tropical wave formed. Without Saharan dust in the atmosphere to hinder it, it began a meandering, westward journey. Sean remained peacefully oblivious as it crossed the wide swath of slightly cooler waters of the Atlantic Ocean until it settled in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Nicaragua. There, it found the waters to be warm and welcoming. With negligible upper level winds to shear it, it had a cozy little incubator to begin its life as Invest 97L. From there, it was soon labeled Tropical Depression Number 12 by the National Hurricane Center.

Just a day later, it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Franklin.

Where it would end up was anyone’s best guess. The forecast models splayed all over the map, literally, from one run to the next. Until it started moving, everyone needed to pay attention to it.

Sean still wasn’t paying much attention to it, however, early on a beautiful, clear Tuesday morning in the small Gulf coastal community of Englewood, Florida. He impatiently stood in front of his TV, waiting for the Weather Channel to finish their tropical update and get to the local radar and weather. Sean only cared about the local boating forecast.

His mate, Emery Nadel, stuck his head out of their bedroom. “Did they say the NHC upgraded it to a tropical storm?”

“Shh! I can’t hear the marine forecast.”

Emery walked out into the living room, dressed only in shorts. It was ten ’til seven in the morning, and they were headed out on the water shortly. “No, seriously, Sean.”

Sean held up a staying hand, listened to the forecast, then turned to answer him. “Yeah. Why?”

“Crap.”

Sean frowned. “I don’t see what the big deal is. You know those things can go anywhere.”

“Sean, babe, think about it. What do I do for a living?”

Emery’s words finally sank in. “Oh.” Emery ran an insurance agency.

“Yeah,
oh
is right.” Emery stared at the TV. “I’m going to have a flood of people wanting to come in and add or change coverage. I’ll have to tell them no, sorry, I can’t, because the companies put a moratorium on that when there’s a declared storm. Then they scream and bitch at me.”

Sean fought the urge to pout. He wasn’t normally a pouter. He considered it beneath him, but dammit, he’d been looking forward to getting out on the open water with Emery. “Does that mean no boating today?”

“No, it’s still a ways off. They can get by without me today.” He pulled Sean to him and hugged him. “Besides, if it heads our way, it might be the last day off I get for a while.” He waggled his eyebrows at Sean. “And I have plans for that sweet ass of yours.”

* * * *

Sean kept his 230 Boston Whaler Dauntless in dry storage at a marina in Englewood. Monday afternoon, Sean had called ahead to have it waiting at the dock for them on Tuesday morning. Emery and Sean had only been together six weeks, but to Sean it already felt like forever, in a good way.

Sean barely remembered what life was like before Emery swam into it. Despite Sean meeting Emery by running over him with his boat while Emery and two of his fellow dolphin shifters were playing in Lemon Bay, and also despite one of those dolphin shifters being a jealous fuck and nearly killing Sean, their future together looked bright.

Sean stood at the wheel and guided the boat out of the marina and down the channel to the Intracoastal. The 250-horsepower Yamaha outboard engine sounded good, running smoothly and pushing the boat through the glassy water.

While they had brought tackle and bait with them this morning, Sean suspected they would do far more fooling around in the water and on the boat than they did fishing. Yeah it was kinky doing it out in the water, but it wasn’t like anyone could see them.

A pleasant shiver ran through him at the thought, making his cock stiffen in his swim trunks. Emery’s cock was nothing to sneeze at, larger than any man he’d ever been with. He didn’t know if it was because Emery was a dolphin shifter, but Sean wasn’t complaining.

Behind the console, Emery stood next to him, just a couple of inches taller than Sean’s own six three.

“I hope I don’t have to miss the hunt this weekend,” Emery said. “I’ve missed the last couple of hunts.”

“How are hunts different from the full moon swims again?” What Sean still didn’t know about dolphin shifters and their protocols and history would fill a few dozen sets of encyclopedias. All he needed to know was that he loved Emery. It didn’t hurt that both sets of parents had come to accept the men were a committed, devoted long-term couple.

Although Sean’s parents, of course, didn’t know about the special abilities of Emery and his family.

“Full moon swims are strictly for fun and play,” Emery explained. “Especially if any of the human mates come along, or if there are inexperienced younglings with the group. Or to welcome new members into the pod. We stick to the shallows and stay out of open water. The hunts are just that, and can happen at any time, although less frequently than the full moon swims. We go out in open water, find schools of fish, and we hunt. People try to come in for those.”

“Why?”

Emery shrugged, a motion that set Sean’s heart racing and his cock throbbing. “It’s more fun to hunt with a pod, for one thing. Safety in numbers. It’s a bonding experience. Teamwork. And the single younglings are sometimes hoping to impress each other if they’re old enough to start looking for a mate.”

A sudden spike of jealousy swirled through Sean’s gut. “What kind of bonding?” He didn’t like feeling jealous. Like pouting, he considered it beneath him. And he certainly trusted Emery. Emery had never given him a reason not to trust him. Sean didn’t understand how that ugly green monster had snuck in.

Emery leaned in and nipped Sean’s neck. “Not sexual. Not for me, at least. Not anymore. Sometimes the younglings might fool around a little during breaks in the hunt.” He arched an eyebrow at Sean. “Those of us with mates, however, don’t screw around. Well, unless it’s our mate we’re screwing around with.” He hooked an arm around Sean’s waist and nibbled on the side of his neck again. “Don’t worry. I only have eyes for you, mister.”

The jealousy he’d felt fled as quickly as it had arrived. Sean wanted to shut down the engine and jump Emery’s bones right there in the middle of Lemon Bay. Unfortunately, with shore less than fifty yards away, they might have witnesses. His cock tented his swim trunks even more. “Good. You can show me when we anchor up.”

Less than an hour later they were out in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Sean was glad to see his favorite near-shore fishing spot, an artificial reef, lay unoccupied. They threw the anchor. Emery shucked his trunks and dove into the water, smoothly gliding below the surface.
