Play Me (Love on Tour #2) (8 page)

“Brush your teeth,” I demanded.

She went into the bathroom. When she walked back out, I was standing there, right outside the bathroom door, waiting.

She stood so that her toes were touching mine and looked up at me, so soft, so tender and delicate, so trusting. I leaned down and kissed her. I was very gentle. She tasted like mint and innocence, instead of like that asshole that had been all over her.

She was eager. She stretched out her back and threw her arms around my neck. I deepened the kiss. I couldn’t help it, she was beckoning me. I lifted her up and she threw her legs around my waist. This made me groan. She liked that.

“I wanna make noise,” she said between kissing me.

I chuckled. “Okay, sweetheart. Let’s make some noise.”

I started to walk us over to the bed. “Not the bed,” she whispered.

I wanted her to be comfortable. I wanted to be soft. She was a porcelain doll to me. But she wanted something else. So I took a few steps until her back was up against the wall.

I was holding her up but I wanted her shirt off. “Take off your top, Bell,” I whispered.

She smiled at me and pulled it over her head. She had on another lacy bra, this one blue. I watched as she unhooked it, slid it off her arms, and dropped it on the floor.

“Beautiful,” I whispered, before bending my head to suckle her nipples.

Her moans and whimpers were fantastic, and I made it my goal to get her as loud as possible. But that meant I needed her horizontal. So I turned around and dropped to my knees, laying her on the ground in front of me.

I had her jeans and sexy little lacy panties off in no time.

“What are you doing?” She asked, as I kissed my way from her knee to her thigh.

I looked at up at her. “What does it look like?” I went back to my trail.

“You’re not going to…” She propped herself up on her elbows. “Hank.”

I was so close to where I wanted to be. I sighed and looked up. “Don’t you like it?”

“I don’t know.”

“What?”

“No one’s ever–”

“What?”

Forget this on the floor shit. I needed to do this right. I picked her up and laid her down on the end of the bed. I tucked her feet next her hips on the mattress and kneeled down in front of her.

“Hank.”

“Hush.”

I dove in. She moaned, then she squealed, then she was screaming. “Oh my God! Oh Jesus! Hank! Holy shit!”

I was so turned on I could barely stand it, but I waited until she’d come twice before I stood up, ripped my own clothes off, pulled her to the head of the bed, and crawled in with her.

She was limp, her eyes half closed. “That was…” she said softly.

I turned her so that we were lying side by side. “You sure you want to keep going?”

“God, yes,” she said. She put one hand behind my head and pulled my face to her for another kiss.

I rolled over, so that she was on top of me. She straddled my hips. Her short legs were spread so wide, I was afraid I would hurt her. She was kissing my neck enthusiastically.

“Bell, we need a condom,” I whispered.

“I have them in my bag.”

I watched as she got up and walked across the room naked. Her spine was curved into a ‘c’ as she bent over the bag that sat on the floor. Then she came back over to me, a handful of foil packets in her hand, and a shy smile on her face.

She dropped the condoms on the bedside table and kept one. She crawled back on top of me and handed me the packet. I ripped it open and handed it back to her.

“Put it on me, sweetheart.”

She definitely knew how to do that.

I pulled her down to kiss me again. I hesitated. I wanted her now more than I’d ever wanted anyone. But that desire was conflicting with my deep-seated need to protect and cherish and her.

She was not conflicted, however, and she sat herself down on top of me. We both made noise then, a lot of it.

****

When I came out of the bathroom she was sitting on the bed wearing my t-shirt. It was a dark grey shirt with
Bantham
written in black right over her tits. I had hundreds of them. I wore them on stage. Most nights I took them off and threw them into the crowd. There were girls all over the country with those shirts.

“I stole your shirt.”

“I see that.”

I was making my way back to the bed. I intended to pull her into my arms. But she stopped me with her words.

“You can make it to your room without it, right? It’s not that far.”

“Yeah, of course.”

“Thank you, Henry,” she said. “I mean, that was so amazing. I really needed that.”

She was smiling her sweet, genuine smile. But it didn’t take the sting of her words away. I knew what this was. I was always on the other side of this. And now, I was the one feeling used.

I pulled my jeans on and gave myself an internal pep talk. I am the player here. I am the one that gets what I want and walks away. I’ve been doing it for over twenty years. This ending is perfect. She is happy, not hurt, not attached. And I enjoyed sex again. I really, really enjoyed it. So it all worked out in the end.

“See you, Bell,” I said, grabbing my boots and heading out the door.

****

My legs were stretched across the bench. It was a clear ‘do not enter’ sign. And it worked. Bell and Mike both took seats across from me when they got to the bus.

I looked at her. She looked relaxed, happy, and well laid. I was cranky and pissed. I took a sip of my coffee and contemplated going to the back of the bus where I could hide out in solitude for the duration of the ride to Cleveland.

I hadn’t made up my mind yet when Sean and Baby entered the bus. I was immediately on alert. Something was definitely up.

Sean slid into the couch across from us and pulled Baby into his arms. She smiled up at him, and a tear slid down her cheek. Sean smiled back at her.

“What’s going on?”

Baby looked at me. And I realized the tears were happy tears. I could see it in her eyes. They’d gotten good news recently.

Neither of them said anything. So I asked another question. “Where were you yesterday? You were late on stage. You were nowhere to be found.”

Sean didn’t answer. I turned to Mike. He must’ve known. But he just shrugged.

“We had an appointment. It took longer than I thought it would, and we got back to the venue a little late.”

“That late at night you had an appointment?”

Mike and Bell were both leaning forward now, as invested in this conversation as I was. The bus started rolling.

Sean shrugged. “The doc knew a guy.”

And then he realized he’d said too much. Sean and I saw the same doctor in Malibu. He was competent and discreet. We’d been seeing him for years, and now Baby went to him, too. When we were on the road he was usually able to call up some colleague of his and get us an appointment, anytime, anywhere. He’d even had people come to venues to see us. Two years ago he’d found an ER doc that was at the concert in Detroit when Baby got hurt.

And now that I knew they’d gone to an emergency doctor’s appointment last night. I did the math – doctor, happy tears, smiles.

“Holy shit! You’re pregnant!”

There was no way to hide it now. They both grinned. Another tear slipped down Baby’s cheek.

“We did a blood test last night. The doctor called this morning to confirm,” Sean said. He was one happy-looking fool.

“Oh my God!” Bell leapt up and threw herself into Baby, hugging her hard. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Congratulations, man,” Mike said.

“Did you do this on purpose?” I asked.

They both looked at me.

“Hank, aren’t you happy about being an uncle?” Sean asked me.

“I might be. I’m still mulling it over. Were you planning this?”

“Not really,” Baby said. She extracted herself from Bell’s arms and came over to stand in front of my feet. “You’re mad because we didn’t tell you. But we weren’t really trying. We were thinking about it after the tour. But, I was on antibiotics a few weeks ago, and they counteract the pill, and…” she shrugged.

“But, it’s a good thing?”

“It’s a very good thing. Why are you so–”

I reached up and grabbed her hands. She fell down into my lap and I pulled her close into a hard hug. I was such an emotional mess today. I had gone from cranky to suspicious to jealous to happy in the last ten minutes. It was killing me.

“I’m so happy for you, Baby.”

Sean was standing at my feet now. “Okay, when you’re done manhandling my wife, I want my congratulations.”

I let go of Baby and handed her to Sean. Then I took his hand. “You’ll be a hell of a dad, Sean.”

“Thanks. You’ll be a hell of an uncle.”

“I’ll be the bad influence uncle,” I said, winking at Baby. She smiled at me.

“Sit the fuck down,” Tony called from the driver’s seat.

Sean laughed and pulled Baby back onto the couch.

“So how long do we have to get used to this idea?” Mike asked.

“Almost eight months.” Baby said.

“Hey,” I said jovially. “I’ve got a partner in sobriety.”

“Yes, you do.”

“The other night–” Bell said, alarmed.

“Doc said not to worry about it.”

“Okay, not worrying. I’m so happy for you both!”

I was happy, too. I was jealous as hell, but happy.

****

Sean and Baby were my family, my whole family. I didn’t have anyone else. Them as a couple was not a problem for me at all. I liked that they were happy. I liked that they had each other. But this was different. Now they would be a family without me, them and the baby. It made me feel like I was an outsider.

Logic was, of course, nowhere near these feelings. And I couldn’t use it now if I wanted to. I was just a ball of emotions. It was dangerous. And that’s why I was on the phone with Tim while Sean was on stage.

“Hank, you have always been a far more sensitive man than you pretend to be.”

“Oh, fuck off Tim. Enough of the psychobabble.”

“Act as tough as you want, but it’s true. You started drinking when you were fourteen years old. It was a coping mechanism. You had all these confusing emotions and you didn’t know what to do with them. And they all start with your mom.”

“Don’t go there, Tim. Not right now.”

“Fine. We won’t talk about her. We’ll talk about Baby.”

“I don’t know how many times I have to tell you this before you hear it. I do not want Baby.”

“Hank, face it, you want a Baby of your own. You want what Sean has. Not Baby herself, but the relationship he has with her. And on top of that, you see Baby herself as the perfect woman. It’s all mixed up together for you.”

“Fucking shrinks,” I mumbled.

He laughed. “You been wanting a drink?”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do to stay strong?”

“Call you, asshole.”

“You alone?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t be. When you get off the phone with me go find Baby or Mike or somebody to hang out with.”

“Sure. Talk to you later Tim.”

I hung up and sat there, alone, until there was a knock on the door.

10

“Come in.”

She was exactly the opposite of what I needed at that moment. She was also looking particularly hot tonight. She was wearing a light colored sundress and a cardigan, bare legs, strappy sandals. Her hair was shiny and hung down her back in smooth waves.

“Hi.”

“What’s up, Bell?” I settled deeper into the faded leather couch that sat against the stone wall in my green room.

She practically skipped across the room and plopped down next to me. “I wanted to see how you were.”

“I’m fine.”

“That was some news today, huh?”

“Yep.”

“Something weird went on between you and them. What was that?”

No way in hell was I telling her. “I suppose it did look weird to an outsider.”

She let out a sigh. She had my number. “Fine. You don’t want to talk about it. Whatever. Let’s talk about something else then.”

I looked at her. I didn’t want to talk. I wanted to get her naked again.

“You eat yet? I have at least a half hour until the encore. Maybe we should get something to eat.”

“I already ate. But I’ll go with you.”

I put my arm on the back of the couch and looked at her. “There is something I want to talk about.”

She settled into the opposite corner of the couch. “Okay, shoot.”

“Oral sex. You not having it. Explain.”

She blushed, but she didn’t look away. “I’ve had it.”

“You’ve given it.”

“Sure. Lots of times.”

“But not received. Why?”

“Why is this so interesting to you?”

“Because I don’t get it. And quite frankly, I think a woman making it to her thirties without having had a good licking is about the saddest thing I ever heard.”

“Licking?” She turned even redder.

“I know your lovers were boring, but Jesus Bell, everyone does that. It’s not like it’s deviant or weird. It’s just a normal part of normal sex.”

“Really?”

“Yes really. What the fuck was wrong with these guys?”

She shrugged.

“And you never asked?”

“No.”

“But you gave blowjobs.”

“God, all the time.”

“Why didn’t you expect anything in return?”

“I told you, Henry,” she said, getting a little irritated.

“Hank,” I said. I liked it when she called me Hank. Henry was for people I would never, ever sleep with, Baby and my mom. And I definitely wanted to sleep with Bell again.

“Like I told you,
Hank
,
I was looking at these guys as husband hopefuls. I wanted to make them happy. So, they were selfish in bed. I didn’t get worked up about it.”

“Selfish has nothing to do with it.”

She cocked her head at me. God she was cute when she did that.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean it’s fun.”

“You like doing it?”

“Hell yes, I like it. I’m getting horny just thinking about it.”

“Really?”

“God girl, your sexual experience is baffling to me.”

She laughed.

“Don’t you like giving blowjobs?”

“No.”

“No? Why not?”

“It was just a thing I did to make them happy. It didn’t really do anything for me.”

I ran a hand over my face. “Then you were doing it wrong.”

She laughed again. “Maybe.”

Talking about this with her was way more than I could handle. I stood up.

“Come on, let’s go watch the rest of Sean’s show.”

She followed me out to the backstage area. Mike and Baby were sitting in folding chairs watching the show. I stopped a little ways behind them and pulled Bell up to my chest.

It was dark back here. I could barely see her. But I could feel her against me. She was looking up at me. And I wanted to kiss her, badly. Instead, I started to move against her, as if I wanted to dance. But our movements did not match up with the heavy rhythm Sean was pounding out on stage.

I felt her hands on my lower back as she wrapped her arms around my waist. It felt so good. I wanted this girl. I wanted her all over again, and not just once, but again and again.

But it was complicated. I had rules for a reason. I didn’t like it when girls got attached to me and I had to hurt them. It’s why sweet girls like Bell were off limits to begin with. And I never spent more than a couple nights with any girl. I usually set the limit at one night, occasionally a girl could ride on the tour bus with me to the next stop, but that was it. Bell was going to be around for the duration. There was no ditching her. And of course I still had the Baby problem.

But the biggest issue of all was that Bell had kicked me out of her room last night. It was Bell that had rejected me after it was all over and done with. She’d gotten what she wanted and she didn’t need me anymore.

I pulled away, extracting myself from her grasp. I couldn’t see her expression in the dark, and it was way too loud back here to hear her if she’d said anything. I turned my back on her and walked over to stand next to Baby.

When I made it to Baby’s chair she looked up at me. She took my hand in hers. I held onto the one girl I could have forever.

****

“So tell me what the hell is going on with Bell,” Sean said, over the sound of the treadmill.

Damn. I did not want to have a confrontation. But somehow Sean had been tipped off. I clicked the arrow up on my treadmill and ran faster.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Sean touched his own controls, slowing his machine down.

“Those girls have a secret. Something is going on. I figured maybe you knew.”

“Why would I know?”

“Because you were with them when they were all shitfaced.”

“So what? They have some girl secret. What do you care?”

Sean looked at me, exasperated. “Bell is important to Baby. So she’s important to me. And I think you know as well as I do that girl is sheltered. She needs looking after.”

“Yeah well, your wife reamed my ass for trying to protect her.”

“Protect her from what?”

I sighed. He didn’t know. He didn’t know any of it. It would be easy to lie to him. But I never lied to Sean. And I didn’t want to start now. I didn’t, however, intend to tell him the whole truth either.

“She came onto Alonso.”

“What?” Sean came to a stop altogether.

I gave up and stopped my treadmill too. I grabbed my towel off the handlebars and wrapped it around my neck.

“I put a stop to it. That’s why she was so pissed at me the other day.”

“I don’t understand. Start at the beginning.”

“She’s got it in her head that she wants a fling.”

His eyebrows knitted up. He looked confused.

“I don’t know what to tell you, man. It must be some sheltered girl thing. She wants to let loose, sew some wilds oats. Some crazy shit like that.”

“On a tour? With dudes like Alonso? What a terrible fucking idea.”

“I know.”

“What are we going to do about it?”

“Your wife says she’s an adult and it’s none of our business.”

“I’ll deal with my wife.”

“Sure you will.”

****

The view from the top of the Statue of Liberty was breathtaking. But I was much more enamored with the faces of my two companions.

“Oh, it’s so amazing,” Baby squealed.

“I know. I love it!” Bell echoed.

They stood next to me, their arms around each other, smiling ear to ear.

“And don’t forget who was brave enough to bring you,” I said.

“Henry, our hero,” Baby reached out to include me in the embrace.

Sean and his extreme fear of heights, was waiting at the bottom of the statue with Mike. The guy that ran the elevator was a huge fan of mine, and he’d arranged it so we had a private viewing. It was just me and the girls up here.

I looked at Bell. Her long hair was blowing in the breeze. Her face was lit up in the sunshine. She looked amazing. It had been four long nights since we’d had sex, and I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

“I didn’t get to the statue the last time I was in New York,” Bell said.

“Where did you go?” I asked her.

“The American Museum of Natural History.” She said it like it was the Sistine Chapel.

Baby sighed. “When Sean and I came out here last spring to visit Stacey, we spent from open to close in there. But it wasn’t enough. So the next day while Sean and Stacey were hanging out, I went back.”

“But you guys picked this,” I pointed out.

“We didn’t have an extra day this time,” Baby said.

“Fucking Lance.”

“In his defense, he did notice that Sean always requested at least two extra days in New York on his tour schedule. But this time Stacey is traveling with her play and she isn’t here, so Lance scrapped the extra time.”

“Sean won’t get to see his sister?” Bell asked.

“Not on the tour. But her trip ends in San Francisco the same night ours ends in L.A., so he’s flying her out the next morning. She’ll be coming for a week long visit.”

“That means I’ll get to meet her,” Bell said.

“Have fun with that,” I groaned.

“You don’t like her?”

“She’s a spitfire, like her mom.”

“Also,” Baby said, “she had a thing for Henry when she was younger. He’s still cranky about it.”

“Did you sleep with her?”

“Hell no! She’s my best friend’s sister. I may be a slut, but I’m not an asshole.”

“I always seem to offend you, don’t I Hank?” Bell said.

“Lighten up, Henry.” Baby slapped me playfully on the chest.

By the time we got back down to the bottom all hell had broken loose. There was a massive crowd around Sean. Mike was working on controlling it, and he was getting some unexpected help from Gary.

We’d just met Gary that morning. He was the general manager for the venue we were playing. He was a tall blonde with broad shoulders, about as big as Mike. And the two of them were doing pretty good at pushing back the males in the group. But there were a handful of women who just weren’t taking no for an answer. I watched as one, with tightly curled brown hair, ducked under Mike’s arm and ran toward Sean. She launched herself into his chest just as Baby rounded the corner.

“Goddamn it,” Baby said.

“I got this,” Bell said, marching toward Sean.

I threw my arm around Baby and we both watched as Bell pushed through the crowd, walked right past Mike and Gary and shoved the girl, who was at least thirty pounds heavier than her.

The girl stumbled back before straightening up. “What the fuck bitch?”

“Get the hell out of here, skank.”

The rest of us watched in rapt attention as Tinker Bell turned into a raging badass right in front of us. The curly-haired girl reached for Bell. I had a moment of panic. There was no question that that girl could do some damage to Bell.

Sean put his arm between them like an auto-gate. “Whoa.”

“Listen bitch you better get out of here before I teach you a lesson,” Bell yelled over Sean’s arm.

The girl stared at Bell, assessing her, and then, much to my surprise, she stuck up her middle finger, turned on her heel, and walked away.

“Okay everybody. Let’s disperse now. See you all at the show tonight.” Mike said loudly.

“Holy shit, Bell,” Sean said.

She grinned at him.

“That was really something,” Gary said, walking up to her and putting his arm around her waist.

Goddamn it.

              ****

The crisp air felt good. It reminded me of Rachel. She used to take me out camping in the mountains. I was a young punk, newly rich and famous, on my way to a serious drinking habit. She was fifteen years older than me, worked at the studio I was recording at, and married.

She would take me on these camping trips with her. There was no alcohol, no fans, no husband. It was just me and her, a tent, and an amazing amount of sex.

The thing I really liked about those trips was the quiet. I grew up in a noisy place, with noisy people, and I worked in a noisy profession. But when I’d go out in the wilderness with Rachel, it was so quiet. We would sit next to the campfire and I could hear the crackle of the fire as it consumed the wood and oxygen, the chirp of the crickets, and the sound of her breath.

Rachel was great in bed, too. I remembered thinking at the time that sex couldn’t get any better than that. And it didn’t, until four nights ago.

Rachel had been a highly experienced lover. She knew how to turn me on, tease me, make me need her so badly I thought I’d explode. I don’t think I ever once had sex with her when at some point during the long session she didn’t have my cock in her mouth.
