E FELT A SHARP BLOW
to his right foot. He looked down. His boot was ripped open and crimson blood was welling out from the ragged gash. He knew his foot was shattered. He felt no pain— only surprise. He tried to move his ankle. He could not. He knew what had happened. A shell fragment or a bullet from the small arms fire below had torn through the unprotected floor of the slow-flying Fieseler Storch and struck him. He felt the little reconnaissance plane shudder. He was losing control.
