Moon Hunters Inc.

Book 1

Justice

Justice is an assassin and a good one. He’s sent to Earth to take out a target and he finds Envy being kept as a pet. Drawn to her, he knows no matter how things turn out, he will protect her with his life.

Envy has been kept like a slave. She counts the days down until her master dies and she will be free. Never has she seen someone like Justice and she doesn’t know what to do with him. Will he free her or wrap the ties that bind around her heart?

Chapter 1

Dangerous as Cyn

The guys teased her all the time. They’d say no one else was as dangerous as Cyn. If they knew anything about her, they would know crazy as Cyn fit better. Secrets were getting out and things were about to get real and really interesting. Cash had finally told them about Justice. He’d been born and bred in a lab and the new mate he now had came from the same lab. Funny thing was, so did Cyn. She was starting to wonder if the whole lot of them at Moon Hunters weren’t all lab rats including Cash. He’d just sent for her and maybe he’d finally tell her what was really going on.

She knocked on the office door that separated Cash from his crew. “Come in.”

Opening the door, she headed inside closing the door behind her. “You needed to see me?”

“I have a job for you. I know you don’t like killing, but this guy is special.”

“Tell me.” Cyn said, letting him know she was willing to listen.

“There’s another lab. It was started when the old one closed.” He tossed her a folder full of information. “You can look at that later.”

“Okay,” She said setting it to the side.

“Some of those listed as dead were sent there before the place was closed.”

“How long have you known?”

“There have been rumors, just rumors, for years. I finally got something solid when Justice visited Earth. He sent a download off of a computer to us. It was a goldmine of information, but there are still some holes in the information. The target seems to be the one in charge, but we’re missing something. I need to be sure, you’ll want to be sure, that he’s guilty before he’s taken out. If it’s not him, then take out the guilty party. Death is too good for the monster that is responsible, but it’s all we have.”

“Where do I go?”

“Space Station Alpha.”

“That’s a hard place to hide.”

“I have faith in you. Find the guilty party, kill them, and free the victims. If any information falls into your hands, send it straight to me.”

That was why now, five hours later, Cyn sat in the copilot’s chair as Bear, one of the new trainees for a position with Moon Hunter’s Inc, piloted. They were a long way from Space Station Alpha, the first station Earth had ever built. It still orbited the moon, even though originally it had been intended for deep space exploration and was a fully capable space ship in its own right.

It would be a long trip and she headed to the back for a nap. After a two hour sleep fest, she went up front and let Bear take a nap. They were on track to meet up with an Oison ship in ten more hours. They would catch a ride to just outside of Earth’s radar where they would take their small ship and fly on to dock with the space station on their own.

These days Earth looked suspiciously at anything or anyone that had ties to Oison. She and Bear would be sibling entrepreneurs out to make a deal with the owner of the space station. The space station might be considered part of Earth territory, but the place itself was owned by Dominion Corporation which was owned by Alex Trundell, her target. He was a rich playboy known to love dark exotic beauties. It was probably why she was here instead of Justice.

Cash assumed that Alex would fall for her on sight since she was his type. She’d seen pictures of the man and he was gorgeous. In the news videos, he walked with an animal grace that hinted he might not be fully human himself. Whatever he was, she would discover it and she would find the secrets he was trying to keep. If he was innocent, he was safe, but if he was guilty, heaven help him, because he was hell bound.

Bear came back in to take the controls, but she motioned him to the copilot’s chair instead. She didn’t need the sleep a human did and judging by what she’d seen, Bear didn’t either. “How much you know about our mission?”

“I know we are investigating Alex Trundell and his company.”

“Do you know why?”

“No, Cash said you would fill me in on whatever I need to know.”

“I think too much secrecy can be dangerous. What do you think, Bear?”

“Is this like a trick question?”

“No. I have another question. Were you born and bred in a lab?”

Bear’s face went white. “He said he wouldn’t tell anyone!”

“Who, Cash?” Bear nodded. “He didn’t. I have a theory that everyone at Moon Hunters is lab bred.”

“All of us, even you? You’re so normal.”

“What you see isn’t always what you get. Our investigation here is about a lab run on the station. We are supposed to discover if Alex and his company are involved and how deeply. The lab must be found and all prisoners freed. If we find records, Cash wants them.”

“He should have told me.”

“That’s what I mean about too many secrets. The labs have flourished in the dark with no one the wiser. It all needs to come out so everyone can see what’s been done and who’s been doing it.”

“That is something I can agree with. My past has always been a sensitive and painful memory. I don’t know my parents and I’m not even sure if I ever did.” Bear admitted.

“I think Cash has gathered us for a purpose he may not even have been consciously aware of.”

“I’m not sure Cash is ever unaware of anything.” Bear sniggered.

“By the time this is all over, I hope we’ll have our answers.”

“It’s fine to hope, but the facts have been buried so long, I doubt they’ll be that easy to expose.”

Cyn thought about what Bear said and she feared he was right, but she was going to hope for the best possible outcome anyway. It was not in her to just give up and expect less than the best. They were nearing the Oison ship now and they would be more comfortable once they were onboard it. The voyage would be two weeks or less on the larger and faster ship.

When they met up and they finally were onboard the larger vessel, Cyn was ready to get to her room. She took a bath and changed clothes making herself comfortable. Now she would take the time to research this Alex Trundell and find out all that she could. Cash was so sure the man would approach her, but she didn’t know why. Trundell was handsome, rich, and smart. She was just plain Cyn, no one special unless you needed someone killed.

Her eyes moved to the mirror, her dark skin and hair might be exotic to some. More so, when they noticed her green eyes. Her body was lithe and lean, she was petite which often made men underestimate her. Most of the time, she dressed casually or in her work clothes. Once in a while, she dressed up and she could hold her own. She hated heels, but wore them well. Dresses weren’t her thing, but she could strut her stuff when it was required.

As she sat at the computer watching the vids of Trundell, it looked like every weapon in her arsenal would have to be used to get the man’s attention and hold it. He was known for fucking and forgetting the most beautiful females in the known universe. Cyn scrolled through an array of starlets, singers, and debutantes all clinging to his arm. How could she hope to catch and keep the interest of a man like that?

Cash had arranged to have her wardrobe bought for her, so she’d not even seen it yet. Maybe a male’s influence on her clothing would help her. She intended to be damn sexy to get her job done. They were on one of the modern and large Oison ships, so they would make it to Alpha in record time.

As they neared their destination, Cyn wouldn’t fool herself. This was personal and not just for her. She had suspected Cash himself was also lab bred. In fact, he seemed to know or remember more about it than any of them. Would that be a help or a hindrance in the investigation? As the pilot announced they were preparing to dock, Cyn wished to hell she knew.

Leaving her room, she saw Bear waiting in the hallway. She approached him and they walked to the disembarking area together. The room was packed with visitors that were originally from the station and from Earth. They were taking one hell of a chance visiting this politically charged area. Some might be detained, never to return to Oison. Cyn wished them the best, but as the hatches opened, her mind needed to be on her duty.

On this job, Bear was posing as her half-brother. Their looks were too different to attempt to claim a closer relationship. Cyn looked mostly human while Bear looked like something else entirely. He was too attractive not to claim as a relative. People would suspect they were lovers which wouldn’t help her cause to get Alex’s attention.

That man was a playboy who women fought over. If he thought she was anything but fully available, he’d just look elsewhere. It was fortunate she was able to come to his attention by negotiating a contract with him. Cyn would take any advantage she could get. For now, they would check into their hotel rooms and then she would prepare for a most important meeting.

“You ever been here before?” Bear asked.

“Yes, a few times, but I wasn’t trying to attract attention then.”

“Which way to the hotel desk?”

“That way.”

She waved her hand and he led while she followed. This was the ritzy part of the station. Here everything was segregated between the rich, middle class, and poor. The top levels were all for those who could afford to stay there. The restaurants were five star as was the lodging. The stores were top notch and so were the prices. A person could buy anything, if they had the coin.

“This is pretentious.”

“What did you expect?”

“Not this crazy stuff.” Bear walked up to the front desk. The clerk looked him over and he didn’t pass inspection. “I have reservations for my group.”

“Name?” the snobby desk clerk asked.

“Bear Haskins.”

Once the clerk saw the reservation, his behavior was appropriate. “I’m sorry, Mr. Haskins. I didn’t recognize you. You’d be surprised how many people try to sneak in here that don’t belong.” He waved at a bell boy. “Where’s your luggage?”

“They will be bringing it in when they unload the ship.” Bear said.

“We’ll have it brought right up once it arrives. Here are your keys and the boy will escort you to your room and handle any requests you might have.”

A boy, not quite in his teenage years, escorted them to their suite. The rooms were nice, but not worth the price. It was the shortage of available accommodations that set prices here. Once they were inside the suite and Bear tipped the boy, he left quickly.

“Unfucking believable. I expected gold fixtures or something judging by the prices of this room.”

“Space is limited, forcing prices up. If you want a room, you pay the going rate.”

“When is your appointment with the target?”

“We’re having a business lunch to start things off.”

“This would be a good time to have some fun.” Bear observed.

“Not for me. Why don’t you go check out the local services? It’s what anyone would expect you to do. Cash will pick up the tab.” Cyn felt devilish but Cash deserved the extra bill because he was trying to deceive them. He was in this up to his shit brown eyes and since he wouldn’t come clean, Cyn would make him pay.

“That’s a great idea. Cash can afford it and I can use the relief.”

“Too much info, Bear. I don’t want to hear a word about it.” And she really didn’t. The prostitutes here were said to be some of the best anywhere, but she wanted no blow by blow reports. “I’m taking a bath and turning in. My day will start early.”

“How come? I thought you wouldn’t see him until lunch.”

“I won’t, but regardless of how lovely you know I am, believe me, it will be improved upon by the salon before lunch.”

Bear left the suite grumbling about female beauty secrets. Cyn was just glad he was gone and she could go through her special ritual to ensure a good night’s sleep before the real work started. Sitting down at the computer terminal, she ordered her meal and wine. Once it arrived, she retired to the bathroom where she filled the tub with bubble bath and relaxed, eating and drinking at her leisure. Once her meal was done, she finished off her bottle of wine, rinsed off, and got out of the tub.

As soon as Cyn was dry, she set her alarm, just in case, and relaxed in bed until she was deep asleep. Her alarm blared, waking her up. She had made her appointment on the computer last night and now she was ready to get all fixed up. Her jobs rarely required she look good so this was an unusual trip for her. She dressed and skipped breakfast. Most salons provided drinks and food. She caught the elevator just outside their door to the top floor.

A hostess approached her the second she stepped inside. The female gave her a surprised look. “Do you have an appointment?”

“Cindy Haskins.” Cyn said with an icy voice. Rich and privileged people were all haughty in this place.

“So sorry I didn’t recognize you, Miss Haskins. Follow me.”

Cyn knew she was surprised that she didn’t look polished like most of their clients. She didn’t care because it was none of their business. She was escorted to a salon chair and given a drink. Another female came by handing out snack trays with meats and cheeses. Cyn grabbed a plate and snacked while she waited. Once the cosmetologist arrived, she kept her busy starting with her hair and giving her the full service.

She looked in the mirror before she left and other than needing to change into something sexier, she looked stunning. It was amazing what a few hours at the salon could do for a girl. Once she made it back to her room, it was time to unpack her new wardrobe.
