Chapter One

The Burning Bonfire

My brother, Luke, made me swear that I would come to his bonfire. He was inviting a group of guys that he knew well from the motorcycle shop where he worked. I had sworn off men after my last relationship. It had only been about three weeks since it had ended but it seemed like an eternity. Maybe it was because it was over long before it actually ended. Jason, my ex, could get pretty nasty at times but I always came running back to him—kind of like a beaten dog runs back to their owner. I was one sick puppy.

Jason loved to play mind games with me. He was a narcissist asshole but he couldn’t help it. At least that was the excuse that I always made for him. When he really wanted to show me who was in charge, he was quick to slap me across the face or grab me by the throat to pin me against the wall. When he wasn’t able to play mind games with me or use physical punishment, he would humiliate me in public. It didn’t matter if our friends were around or if it were complete strangers. To this day, I still have no clue why I stuck it out with him for almost three years.

After multiple bad relationships, you get down on yourself and feel like you aren’t worth anything. This was the case for me, anyway. It didn’t matter how much I dieted, colored my hair or even if I bought new clothes; I still felt like my worth as a human being was zilch. It also doesn’t help that I’ve always been attracted to the bad boys. There’s something dangerous and exciting about them that makes me weak at the knees.

As I was getting ready for the bonfire that night, my gut knew something exciting was going to happen. My mind thought differently but I could not care less one way or another. I was still processing the fact that I was single. Jason was gone. I promised myself that I would try harder, do better. Besides, I thought, there’s not going to be any good guys that hang out at a motorcycle shop. They’re all bound to be bad guys—and that’s when the butterflies in my belly began to stir. I put on an extra coat of mascara just for good measure. Just in case there might be one good, hot guy at the bonfire. A girl can never be too sure.

After I finished covering my face with my Cover Girl makeup, I pulled open the double doors to my walk-in closet. That was my favorite part of my whole apartment—it had a closet that any woman would die for. There were racks mounted to all three walls of the closet, complete with overhead shelving that lined the interior. When you opened the doors, the fresh scent of wood pierced your sense of smell. I loved that closet.

I carefully laid out my clothes, still unsure as to why I cared so much. I chose a pair of my favorite worn blue jeans, the kind that fit like a glove that flared at the bottom, and opted for my favorite purple blouse. The blouse made me look hot, exposing my cleavage and accentuating all of my curves. I slipped into my outfit and gave myself a good look in the mirror.

Why did I care? It was just my brother’s stupid bonfire.

Completing my look, I slipped on a pair of black high heeled leather boots and applied a plum shade of lipstick to give my lips that pouty look that every man finds sexy. I smacked my lips together and decided my look was complete. I was hot. Damn I was so hot! Why did I ever let Jason and all of the other assholes treat me like that?

I pulled up to my brother’s house just as the sky was beginning to turn to dusk. Exiting my jeep, I left my keys in the ignition and studied some of the bikes that were already there.

Do you need help setting anything up, Luke?” I asked my brother.

No, Tara. The guys and I just have to carry the wood from behind the garage to get the bonfire started. Why don’t you make yourself a drink?”

I could see the various bottles of alcohol and beer lining his kitchen table as soon as I walked into the house. Even though nobody was drinking heavily, you could definitely smell booze in the air. I walked up to the table and prepared myself a screwdriver. Vodka has always been my favorite liquor; it seems to go with almost everything or you can drink it by itself.

After mixing my drink, I tilted my head back and took a big swig from the red Solo cup. The delicious cold alcohol rolled over my tongue, allowing me to take joy in every ounce of flavor it had to offer. As I savored every drop that was in my mouth, lavishing in the moment, I could feel someone watching me. I sat my cup on the kitchen counter, sending bits of heaven sloshing around and splashing out of the cup.

I spun on my heel in the direction that I thought I was being watched. There he was. Tall, handsome and damn sexy. Not knowing what else to do, I stared back at him like a grinning fool. My face felt hot from embarrassment. Who was this guy? A co-worker of my brother? A biker? A neighbor? It didn’t matter who he was, I wanted him to be mine.

After what seemed like eternity, he smiled and started laughing. At first I just continued to stare at him but his laughter was catchy; and soon, I was laughing with him, too. I wasn’t sure why but it felt good to laugh and let loose for a moment. When we finally settled down, I smiled at the tall, sexy man still drinking in his every feature.

And you are….?”

You can call me Shadow. What’s your name, pretty lady?”

Shadow? I mean, what’s your real name? I’ll only tell you mine if you tell me yours.”

I only go by Shadow. Take it or leave it. Only close friends or family know my real name.” he said grinning at me.

Well, I could be a close friend”, I said as I seductively walked over to him, allowing my exposed cleavage to bounce in my bra with each step.

What the hell was I thinking? “Tara, SNAP out of it!” I told myself, but it was useless. There was something about his eyes. His smile…he was so perfect and gorgeous.

Is that so? How close can we be if I don’t even know your name?”

He had a point. “Tara” I barely said in a whisper as I allowed my nose to soak up every being of his scent. The combination of bad boy, mixed with fear and mystery excited the hell out of me.

Well Tara, I think you have a beautiful smile.”

Hey, what are you doing talking to my sister?” My brother definitely knew how to kill the mood. He had been doing it to me since we were young enough to be interested in the opposite sex.

Nothin’. This is your sister?!” Shadow paused for a brief moment and then said, “Not bad. I didn’t know that you were the only ugly one in the bunch.”

Shadow and my brother laughed as they traded a punch.

Well are you two coming outside with the rest of us or what? This bonfire isn’t going to be any fun if you two sit in here drooling over each other.”

We followed my brother out to the bonfire. For the most part of the night, I sat beside Shadow. Listening to him talk with the guys had a calming effect on me. His voice was deep and smooth. He was also very knowledgeable when it came to bikes. The guys just sat around talking about engines and tires. Normally I would find all of this boring, but Shadow made it interesting.

After a few beers around the bonfire, most everyone was pretty lit. As the night air started to chill, I scooted closer to Shadow for warmth. Something about him made me feel safe, protected. With one swift movement, he slipped his arm around me and gave me a little squeeze. I smiled up at him, admiring his strong, masculine features and firm biceps.

Around three in the morning, we noticed a group of black SUV’s driving suspiciously around my brother’s house. First they drove east, and then came back going westbound. My brother warned me to go inside but I told him that he was overreacting. I wanted to stay next to Shadow for as long as I could. I knew that he would protect me if anything bad should happen.

The black SUV’s began driving westbound again; this time they were going slower. I don’t know why but I became very nervous and on edge. You know that feeling right before shit hits the fan and your body tells you to run? My body was screaming run but my heart said “stay”. Stay I did and I would soon regret it.

Chapter Two

Gunshots Fired.....

Gunshots rang in my ears as I heard blasts from all directions. I heard someone yelling, “Get down!” but I wasn’t fast enough. Still living out a fairy tale dream in my head, dreaming of a future with Shadow, I didn’t pay attention when my brother and his friends all began to draw weapons.

Before I knew it, my left arm was burning with pain. I began to get a bit woozy. I had been hit. Shadow was trying to pull me to safety. I could hear all of the guys talking but I didn’t understand what they were saying. I knew the words but none of them made sense. They may as well have been speaking in a different language. I know I heard “La Familia” but I didn’t understand what “La Familia” was. I can’t ever recall hearing that before.

A few of the motorcycle club members hopped on their bikes shortly after I heard “La Familia” and rode off into the darkness. I could hear the engines of their Harley motorcycles roaring for miles. They were going fast, but I still had no clue where they were going or who had attacked us. Shadow didn’t go; he stayed by my side.

Luckily, the bullet that came into contact with my arm merely grazed my skin. I had a slight burn from the gunpowder. My head was spinning with all of the events that had just taken place.

Who were those guys?” I asked Shadow.

They’re bad news Tara. We’re very lucky that they attacked us here at your brother’s house. At least he lives in the middle of nowhere. Right now, the rest of the motorcycle club is going to get to the bottom of this.”

I heard one of you guys say ‘La Familia’, what were you talking about?”

Listen Tara, I don’t have time to explain right now. Right now we need to get out of here. You’re coming with me. I didn’t like the looks of them when they drove by here real slow and I don’t want them coming after you. You’re going to stay with me.”
