A Conquest Like No Other (16 page)

Complying, Devil slit his wrist
with his descended fangs before bringing it to Nikki’s mouth. Pushing into her
almost vacant mind, Viper encouraged her body to obey his instructions. He
needed her throat to start moving, pushing the blood into her body. After what
seemed like a lifetime, he received a nod from Devil, indicating that it was
working.

As her life force grew stronger,
he wrapped his around it, offering her his
fae
magic
to speed up her healing. Finally, her strength returned, not fully but enough
to cause her to react to the liquid dripping down her throat. With a cough, her
hand came up and pushed Devil away. Relief swamped Viper and hope filled his
heart. His mate had returned to him.

“Did the transformation work?” he
asked his brother.

A rare emotion filled Devil’s
eyes. Confusion. When Devil spoke, Viper began to understand its presence.
“She’s not only vampire now, my brother. Look at her eyes!”

Following Devil’s stare, Viper
did as instructed. “How the fuck is that possible?”

“I’m starting to believe that
with our mates anything is possible.”

Viper couldn’t take his gaze off
his mate. Nikki’s beautiful hazel eyes had been replaced by yellow glowing
ones. As she offered him a weak smile, her young vampire fangs could be seen.
Pulling Nikki further into his body, Viper held on to his mate for dear life.
To him she had been special from the moment he had laid eyes on her. Now his
beliefs were there for all to see. She was the only half vampire, half
fae
that he knew to exist. And she was his.

Chapter
Twenty

“So does someone want to tell me
what the hell happened back there?” Nikki asked as Viper carried her from a
building that had seen better days.

“Where would you like me to
start, sweetheart? From the point when that bastard kidnapped you?” Viper said,
looking over to where a noticeably trembling Paul was being handed over to the
two detectives from Gabby’s
half brother’s
murder
case. “Or at the point where I felt you skewer yourself on a couple of knives,
nearly robbing me of you in my life? Or what about when that bastard held a
knife to your throat, threatening to finish the job? What exactly did you want
to know?”

Lifting her hand to his cheek,
she encouraged him to look down at her. “I’m sorry, Tatts. I didn’t mean to
cause you so much stress.”

His features softened as his face
descended on hers. Kissing her forehead, he said, “I know you didn’t plan this,
sweetheart, but if you ever scare me like that again, you won’t be able to sit
down for a week.”

“I love you,” she said, smiling
up to her mate. The reminder of what could have happened had her sharing her
feelings for the only man she had ever loved, ensuring she would never be
denied an opportunity again.

“I love you too, sweetheart. And
don’t you ever forget it!” came his instant reply.

Snuggling into his body, she
allowed herself to relax in the knowledge that she was safe. That was when she
began to notice a few unusual sensations, as well as a couple of added features
to her body.

Her psychedelic view of her
surroundings could have easily been attributed to the drugs she had been given.
Though she wasn’t sure she wanted to lose this new, brighter vision. Viper
appeared to her impossibly more beautiful than before. But her new sharper
teeth had her asking, “Um, Tatts, why do I have fangs? And what happened to my
eyes? I’m seeing colors that don’t go with the usual industrial areas around
here.”

“You were nearly dead. It was the
only way to save you.”

“Not that I’m complaining about
being saved, but what exactly did you do?”

Before she could get her answer,
all hell broke loose. “Where the fuck is my mate, and my car?” Judge yelled,
running up to the road.

“Since when does Judge have a
mate?” she asked, even more confused. She tried to take in her surroundings but
the rainbow of colors had her vision blurring instead. She closed her eyes.

“Since Charli walked into our
office with information of your kidnapping. I might also add, she’s the gambler
that he’s been trying to catch for somehow stealing from us.”

“Charli, really?” Nikki said,
excited at the prospect of Charli still being in her life. But still she
refused to open her eyes. “Well, I guess you now know how she did it.”

“Yes, but now she’s gone and got
herself in a lot more trouble by stealing Judge’s car,” Viper replied,
laughing. “Come on, sweetheart, let’s go home and I’ll explain the changes
you’ve noticed to your body.”

With them all squeezed into the
van, Devil drove them back to the hotel. Judge was still fuming over the stunt
Charli had pulled. Nikki would have found it hilarious had she not been more
interested in hearing Viper, Devil, and Chaos’ theories about what had happened
to her. The best they could come up with had to do with Viper’s life force
still being connected to hers when she went through the transformation. Her
body drew what it needed from both offered life forces at the time,
intertwining them to suit her needs.

All she knew was that her new
eyesight was going to take a lot of adjusting time. The constant changing
colors made her nauseous and dizzy. She didn’t know how Viper coped, though he
knew no different. He was born
fae
. The ill effects
of her new sight were well worth it, though, she conceded. If it meant she had
another chance at a life with Viper, then it was a small price to pay.

By the time she had arrived back
to their quarters and had a shower, her new fangs and psychedelic vision
weren’t the only changes she had noticed. It would seem that Paul had managed
to mark her with the tattoo gun.
My Bit
was etched into her lower back. Devil’s blood hadn’t erased all of her scars
from her ordeal. Now she was walking around with another reminder of the man
who at last report was being sent for psychological testing compliments of
Viper’s own brand of punishment.

According to her mate, he had
decided that death was too much of an easy out for Paul, so Viper set his worst
memory to play continuously in his head. He would be caught in a never-ending
nightmare for the rest of his life. A suitable punishment considering that was
what he had subjected her to. If she hadn’t met Viper she would still be living
it. He had managed to vanquish her fears, but not her scars.

As she looked at the black words
just above her backside, Viper reassured her once again. “We can have it
removed once it’s completely healed,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “Or
if you like, I’ll find the best tattoo cover up artist, and you can add to your
already colorful skin.”

“Really, you would do that for
me?”

“Sweetheart, in case you haven’t
noticed I would do anything for you,” he replied, kissing her sweetly on the
lips.

Her heart filled and her pussy
leaked, but something else drew her attention. “Hold on, what do you mean
already colorful skin
?”

“You’re half
fae
now, sweetheart. You have skin markings like mine.”

“Really?” she asked, looking at
herself in the mirror again. “Why can’t I see them?”

“Because like mine, they are for
your mate’s eyes alone. And let me tell you, they are stunning, just like you.”

Lifting up, she pressed a kiss to
Viper’s mouth. As she tried to deepen the embrace, Viper held firm, refusing to
allow her to take it any further. His hard cock pushing into her stomach spoke
to her of his need and desire, but still he kept the kiss gentle.

“Please, Tatts,” she begged.
Unfortunately, her body chose that moment to speak of its own needs. She
yawned.

“No, sweetheart. You’ve had a
long night, and I won’t have you pushing yourself.” She pouted. “Don’t look at
me like that. Trust me on this, you’ll thank me when you wake up. You’ve not
only worked a night shift, but been kidnapped, nearly died and been changed
into a vampire and
fae
. Experiencing one of those
would be exhausting enough, and you’ve been through all four. You need your
rest. We’ve got the rest of our very long lives together to explore every
sexual fantasy you have several times over. Tomorrow we might even reinvest in
another
B.O.B
. What do you think?”

“Hmm,” she said, trying to hide
her yawn as her eyes drooped heavily.

“That’s it, get into bed, and
I’ll go and turn everything off.”

“So what about before? Would I
have died of old age while you stayed young?”

“No, sweetheart, our mating bound
our life forces together. You would have lived as long as me, even as a human,”
Viper said, kissing the tip of her nose.

“What about Gabby?” she asked,
pulling from his arms and crawling onto the welcoming bed. She realized how
right Viper was. Her body was growing heavier with every movement.

Climbing into bed, Viper pulled
her back into his body. “As long as she drinks Devil’s blood on a regular
basis, then yes. You won’t lose your friend to old age.”

That had her relaxing further
into the mattress. She didn’t know what she would have done if she was faced
with losing her best friend. “Um, Tatts, you said I was half vampire, right?”

“Yes, sweetheart. Are you upset?
I couldn’t let you die.”

She turned to face her mate.
“It’s not that I’m upset. I’m just not sure that I can drink blood, that’s
all.”

Kissing her forehead, Viper
explained, “We don’t know what you will need to do to survive. As far as Devil
and I know, you are the only one of your kind. Let’s just take things as they
come, okay?”

“Okay,” she replied sleepily.
Snuggling in closer to Viper’s chest, she allowed sleep to draw her closer but
her thoughts turned to her new friend.

“What’s Judge going to do about
Charli?”

“When he catches up to her, he’ll
ensure she knows who she belongs to.”

“But how’s he going to do that?
In the van he said something about tracking his car, but she returned it here.”

“Let him worry about that. He’s a
mountain lion. He loves a good chase, and I suspect that Charli is going to
give him the chase of his life,” Viper said, hugging her closer. “Just like you
did with me. But I caught you, and I never plan on letting you go.”

“Sounds perfect,” she muttered as
sleep enveloped her, happy in the knowledge that she was safe and loved.
